Tamiya BBX on the BB-01 Chassis - Step 8 - The Trailing Arm Linkage
It's finally here on the channel!! The NEW Tamiya BBX on the NEW BB-01 Chassis! I just LOVE the look of this car and I think this will be a true performer in the world of Tamiya buggies.
This has been designed from the ground up! It uses a very strong (and actually quite heavy) plastic base that you then use to build a full roll cage on top of. It's a very very cool design!
This kit also comes with a FULL set of ball bearings! Thank you Tamiya as most Tamiya kits only come with brass bushings and plastic bearings. So you're going to save some money on upgrading this right off the bat.
However, please note that I believe this kit is designed for the seasoned R/C enthusiast. Why? Well, if you're a beginner or novice we are used to the kits coming with everything you need to get going minus the transmitter and standard size steering servo. For the BBX, you'll need an ESC (electronic speed controller, motor, and a low profile servo. Furthermore, you'll need to be careful what motor you purchase as not all motors will work due to the length of the pinion shaft that is needed for the BBX. So that's something to watch out for. The big question you'll need to ask yourself is do you use a brushed or brushless system with this car? The jury is still out on that one but my plan initially is to build this as a retro kit. What do I mean by a retro kit? Imagine buying the BBX back in the 80's where your ESC and standard 540 motor were included. This is where we will start. Let's see how the BBX will perform with just a brushed sport tuned motor. I plan on going brushless in the future but this brushed system will be just a fun starting point.
The other question you'll need to ask yourself is "Do I get the available slipper clutch?" Hmmmmmm...I don't have an answer yet as I'm still working on this question too. Time will tell.
If you are going to, or have already purchased a BBX, be sure to subscribe and click the notification button so you can follow along with the build series.
In this video we will do step 8 where we will put together the trailing arm linkage.

    Great run matey. 😊 I'm a big fan of Tamiyas motor range,and own many sports tuned,torque tuned,super stocks,technigolds,and even their super modified motors. But,I have always found the gt tuned to be a wet flannel! The one in my avante is totally gutless..... Soooo slow. Saying that though,24 was a very impressive speed for such a slow motor. 🙏 I think with improved tires,and a larger pinion you can squeeze more out of this my friend. I know that your not a fan of lipo but I honestly believe you would benefit from a 2s pack big time. I was stuck on NIMHs up until last year's speed runs (mainly due to the stigma around lipos and fires!) But I finally stepped over to the dark side and haven't looked back since! They are faster,lighter and offer far better run times. Now I have the knowledge of how to care for them correctly they seem far less daunting. 😂 Buy a couple of decent packs,an intelligent charger,a lipo bag and store them away from the house and it's all good! They have given my vintage Tamiya and Kyoshos a new lease of life.... And a definite increase in speed. The only downside is that they won't fit in some of the older cars,I hate having to dig out a NIMH for my 959 now! Good luck with hitting your goal of 30mph buddy. 😊 👍 👍 👍

    Hi. Just got to this point in my build, only, I’m having an issue where the right mount is a super loose fit and the left is a super tight fit. With the screws tightened up the loose mount still will rock a little in the seat with a little force. I’m concerned this might be an issue because of the symmetry of the body mounts and when the shock bears load. I may just shim up the loose mount somehow, but was looking for suggestions and if anyone else had this problem. Thanks.

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC Před dnem

      Hmmm….something doesn’t sound right. Just trying to troubleshoot here but the D4 and D5 pieces….are they in the right places? If they’ve been reversed that could be a factor?

    • @ColinJ88
      @ColinJ88 Před dnem

      @@FastFreddyRC Yes, they are on the correct way. Would it be normal for these mounts to have a little play post build? I’m not understanding why they’re even necessary otherwise. Why not just have a fixed mount on the chassis? Id like to glue them but not sure if they were designed to be a bit flexible, or might have to be removed in the future for some unknown reason to me.

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC Před dnem

      @@ColinJ88 Ah...ok you might not have done anything wrong then and yes there is a bit of play even after you screw them on. Why is this? Well the bathtub chassis is the same one they use for the grasshopper but the grasshopper has only friction shocks. The Hornet gets the oil filled rear shocks which fit differently AND the extension piece (D4 and D5) give you the rear body mounts for the Hornet which stick out further back. So they are using the same shock mounts from the grasshopper and adding a piece to make the same shock mount work for the hornet. It's ok if there's a bit of play. Once the shocks are mounted on you should find it all works just fine.

      Yeah I think that’s probably true. I’ve never run into this before. Usually they just fit easily over the shaft. Got there in the end but you’re right…metal upgrades might be a good idea with this one.

      @FastFreddyRC Před 9 dny

      Yeah I say it's respectable. I've ordered a bunch of different pinions so all I can do right now is use ones I've got. I took the 22T out of a TT02. But I have a 23T and 25T coming. Curious to see how different the speed will be with the new motor and bigger pinions.

  • @AddamsPlayground

    The body turned out super cool!! nice little bump in speed as well. I think I have a 28t pinion in mine, don't quote me but I pretty sure it is a 28t. Looking forward to seeing what the next runs are with it! One suggestion is to get it rolling straight in the direction you want to go and then roll into the power. It helps take some of the dartiness out of it. Also if you can dial back the steering rate or set the expo on the steering to only do small (very small) inputs it will help the twitchy feel of it also! Best of muck my friend!

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC Před 9 dny

      Yeah...I'm super happy with the body. I had orginally intended to go box art but I think for the SRC the custom job was a much better choice. I have a couple pinions on order that should be here by early next week...don't think I picked a 28T...might have only gone with a 26T..I can't remember now. But great ideas Addam. I'd forgotten about the steering rate adjustment so I'll do that for the next run. I'm realizing the faster this goes the less control I've got lol - But thanks Addam...great suggestions as always. - Still looking forward to seeing your runs!!

    Nice increase in speed, Freddy 👏 The 131 body is beautiful 😮 I would be scared to use it on speedruns. If you want to go GT Tuned, throw in the 25t or 26t pinion. Next upgrade should be better tires (looked like sliding a lot) and LIPO 🚀🤝

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC Před 9 dny

      Thank you! Was happy to see an increase that's for sure. The body turned out better than I could have hoped for. Once the decals were on it it just got cooler and cooler. But yeah...I know what you mean about the speed run...I'll just have to cross my fingers it doesn't get too damaged or I don't crash it lol - which might be asking a lot as the speed increases. But if I do crash it you'll definitely get to see it lol. Pinion...agreed...I have a few different ones on order that should arrive next week. Tires...yeah...it needs foam tires I think but I haven't been able to source any yet...haven't looked much but it's in the back of my mind. So many things to think about...it was also recommended that I get a gyro for this so that's another thing I may look for.
