Helix & marksman! (why I don't use Obsidian)
where do i get a fast language server?
fast language servers come from small projects
Thanks for this! I'll be using it with Zed
Is there a good way to preview the result of the markdown within helix or in a helix adjacent manner?
I just started using helix (It's my first time actually putting the time to learn a modal editor and I'm satisfied with the results just three days in not even mentioning how easy lsp integration was) But the only problem I faced while following the tutor was these chords. I thought we are leaving chords behind now that we are using a modal editor but the most useful one opening the window menu needs ctrl+w which is hard for me to press because I'm used to only left ctrl key and I can't press both of those keys with one hand and now you are mentioning ctrl+s to save in the jumplist which is even harder than ctrl+w to press. Why the devs decided to add chords?
I don't have an answer to all your questions but I rebind my Caps Lock key to Control, and that's how I use those key combinations
just installed helix but js language server won't work at all
bro really don't ";" = "command_mode" ???
Subbed bro! I've just started using helix and your videos are exactly what I needed! I hope your channel keeps growing steady!
Zellij got a file picker and it opens the file in Helix by default, if that's how the Shell is configured.
I rather like to use Helix inside of Zellij.
What do yuo mean by the -20% speed? (I like your videis btw been using hx bindings for like half a year)
`be` is faster than `miw`
while trying to have A lots of rust-based tools to work in Terminal.....Got Some Top-notched, Next-Gen, Fully-Functional, Minimal-Toml-Configuration products....Loving my terminal now...Feels so much own..... Wezterm--✅ Yazi---✅ Helix---✅
Helix!
Looks like an army uniform 😀
What a waste !
I'm exploring Helix on mac. I used homebrew to install marksman, but hx --health says it can't find marksman. It's installed in a standard homebrew $PATH location. Are there additional steps beyond installing the language for it to work in Helix? Should I add something to language.toml?
I haven't setup marksman in a while but I do seem to remember that I didn't use brew to install it
@@LukePighetti It needed the server and command path added to the "language.toml" file. It's found the server now, but Marksman still can't find link definitions. idk what's up with that. I'll just have to keep at it... Thanks
I miss your helix tips and tricks videos. pls do more of them <3
for me using helix atm learning a modal editor over vscode and i really enjoy it. im not convinced it needed to have a file picker, i usually scope myself into a feature and then in space mode just look at the current open buffers instead
Awesome! I love these short quick videos. Now I want to know how to efficiently open that line we just found in helix!?
I just started using helix-gpt. Bit tricky to set up for your favorite language RN. I think ppl would be interested in learning to use GPT/Copilot in Helix. BTW. I've been using Helix for about a year and still found some helpful tips just watching the first three hx videos 👍
I installed Helix because of you. I can now open helix with "hx", but I do not know how to escape from insert mode but I do know :q! -> how to learn helix? the website isn't helping me and I do not know any vim.
esc key will take you from insert to normal mode
Silence! Let him cook.
😂😂😂😂😂 neovim 7 h 44m. To make it work . Not perfect just work
i am coming here _back_ now, after having 16 more months of experience. hear me out If u r a begginer to all these modal editors, and got suckered in by helix's clever marketting & youtube comments & are now afraid of nvim. * Helix SU*kS big time. It is half baked pile of g**bage with huge pile of inefficiencies which far far outweigh the shiny TUI it has. * Use helix just for 4 days: learn quick basics like maw, miw, etc. It will reduce the learning curve to nvim. * Then switch to neovim vanilla, first with no LSP, then use it with Vscodium using the extension: asvetliakov.vscode-neovim extension which makes use of neovim's powerful client server capabilities.
occasionally keep using neovim in the terminal, and use it full time in the supported GUI editor. This will provide u with LSP capabilities of the GUI editor, while savong u from potential fear of nvom configuration. This will further flatten the learning curve to a huge degree.
trust me, i have spet countless hours trying to force myself to make helix work as i was too afraid of the poison in the media about vim family. i am soool glad i finally ditched it for good, and took the plunge into nvim. it was a breeze. the "action object" mode is never a problem as the helix marketting portrays it to be this giant evil. i use visual mode to make a selection beforehand if i ever need that. so yeah... just follow above guide for starting up with modal editors and go where it takes u from there.
... afraid of [neovim due to] the poison ...
i havent got time to figure out LSP in nvom yet, but i use helix health to know what might be needed for a particular language. e.g. `hx --health typst`
lsp in nvim [standalone] yet but loke i said, that is not _much_ of a problem as i use vscodium to provide for that.
Yazi is nice for moving files around and browsing, but I don't really need to do this in helix, so helix fuzzy finder is fine for me in helix.
will check out yazi, thanks!
I use WezTerm, Nushell and Helix, and work on frontend. I don’t even have VS Code or Neovim installed anymore.
I love helix. 🧬. We need more videos on cool things to do in helix.
I am not native english speaker and dont understand some things. How you can jump to same definitions?
Boo for not using the ISO8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:SS) (with HH:mm:SS being optional)
Oh that's an actual cool case of use for multi cursor + replace mode. I feel like a troglodite with my 50 * TODO: something
Wait… what helix keymap plugin exists in vscode ? How is it called? AFAIK there’s no such, the couple i installed are not doing good job and nowhere close to helix keymap
You forgot to mention the third criteria, "can your knights distinguish your flag through a visor from your rival baron's flag (who has a very similar flag)"!
i guess we'd need to know who are enemies are first!
Why does the speed curve of helix flatten compared to vim? They both use roughly the same amount of keystrokes / combinations to get the same thing done right?
vim seems to be a lil faster at the top end. that's just a vibe check though, i have no data
Is there a reason you prefer flutter over react native as I realize your contents are mostly flutter based.
To be perfectly honest I find the "which framework" arguments endlessly boring so I just pick whatever's going to deliver the most value for the project and ship. Since I have spent most of my recent years as a mobile engineer writing Flutter, I use Flutter because I already know how to solve every problem I might run into.
@@LukePighetti That’s true. I’m more productive with flutter than react native but can’t get the fact that my apps don’t render natively out of my head. I feel like if flutter was mapping flutter and dart code to the respective OS by utilizing an AI core like Gemini underneath, would have been more innovative especially in 2024. But yeah
@@TahiruAgbanwa i might try an Expo app here in the near future
the answer to the question is no.
but i like the video tho
escape colon o space period enter
space f
id rather have a file picker in helix than a beer
A lot of those small changes added up! Looks good
Never used the HSL picker before, that's a great tip 💡
love the HSL picker, tint or shade any color easily
maybe just have the flame change color depending on how long the streak is; dunno about much else | I just watch this UI/UX stuff as a Indie Game Dev
game ux is based, y'all 5 years ahead of mobile app ux
can u share the figma file thanks
i'll have to ask casey, it's his to give away
Interesting video. I like this randomness of the content you're uploading.
I like the helix stuff and command line stuff. I am learning rust. I do scan your other videos just in case you have something that matches another one of my interests. I don't know what else you could do that I would be interested in but perhaps this is the time for you to experiment? I have noticed that having multiple channels (I have 3 watch only channels) is helpful because things are better targeted for each channel: that shows you how crappy search algorithms are.
I'm with you. vim bindings are terrible. I first used vim over 35 years ago - after I had already leant to touch type. I started as a systems admin and thus I use the lowest common denominator - vim & default key bindings (nano is sh#t) - everywhere because I'm constantly accessing unfamiliar systems. Generally I don't install software on those systems (it's not worth the hassle) so I use vim, bash, sed and friends. Helix is probably the only software that I would consider installing on a system, even one rarely used, because it makes me much more productive. The key-binding juice is worth the installation squeeze. Helix bindings are clearer and, like you, I don't have to go back to manual for really basic stuff. Easy to build on the current binding knowledge too. I want helix bindings everywhere.
Wouldn't a plug-in system then allow other parties (not the helix core team) to develop plug ins like the file manager? If yes, that seems like a great use of their time. Then they'll be able to decide what is core vs what can be left to other authors.
Man this works perfectly with a note CLI app I made, thanks!
Nice
Something that I like of having VSCode + Helix is that in VSCode I can do `Alt + Left Arrow` and `Alt + Right Arrow` to go back and forward to the last location without having to add the line to the jumplist manually.
