Bikepacking the Montañas Vacías: 700km across Spain's wild landscapes
This is Ilse's first bikepacking adventure! She has never ridden more than 30km's on her city bike on the flat, city roads of Belgium. We followed the Montanas Vacias, a stunning bikepacking route that winds through the most remote region of Spain. We deal with mud that clings to everything and makes pedaling impossible. We encounter snow. We even run out of food. Most of all though, we enjoy our time in the wilderness and experience the culture of Spain.

      50ft is a good starting point though you could probably get away with less. Remember the rope is doubled so if food should be 12ft high at least you’ll need an absolute minimum of 24ft but with knots and branches being a bit higher sometimes… yeah, 40-50ft and then shorten if you find you can.

    NO flamenco (or flamenco like) music outside Andalucía! Please!! That music belong *exclusively* to that region (and it's pretty recent in time in historical terms), it is not heard and never has been played outside Andalucía, please don't put it in photage of other regions of Spain. Historic music form the region, historic national music, regional folklore music, music related with the period of the towns or monuments or something totally neutral with no direct connection like in the rest of the video would be a much better option.

      I’m not sure of who is running it besides the park service but our National Parks are terribly overcrowded these days. It must be very difficult to manage the influx and hordes of people, many of whom are very uneducated with respect to proper backcountry behavior. Just look at poor Yellowstone and all the buffalo and bear incidents. Glacier is so busy these days, you need reservations or to enter the park well before dawn. Even then there can be massive lines and traffic. I’m curious what you find has changed so much? How has it been ruined? I’ve only been there the one time.

    Our scoutmaster showed us a great technique because the bears in California figured out they can just take a claw an cut the cord. Same technique as you all the way up to step three...Then you grab a stick that is maybe the size of a really big marker, 8 inches long would be fine. After you pull your bag as high as it goes (without tangling it on the branch it's on), you reach high up on the rope and tie a half hitch knot to attach the stick. Then when you let the rope go back up, it'll stop at the bear bag and suspend it in the air. The bear can't pull the rope down (darn thumbs!) and if it cuts the rope, it won't have any effect on it.

    • @RyanKodakBrown
      @RyanKodakBrown Před 14 dny

      Yes! I learned it by the name “PCT method!” That’s exactly what inspired this hang but I didn’t need the stick since the bears aren’t educated there and I needed to pull it so far away from the tree. Did you hear of the bear cubs on the AT who were taught by there mother to jump out of the tree and onto the food bag?! When there is a will, there is a way! 😅

    Hello from French Switzerland, I discovered your channel with this video and it’s always exciting to see new adventurers on bikes! Your images are magnificent (even without a drone;). Above all, it is so much more interesting to film with a reflex equipped with a zoom which allows you to bring out perspectives and details. I'm tired of the eternal images from GoPro and other super wide angle action cameras without focus. I really like filming details down to the smallest, such as flora and insects (also with an APS-C). On the road away from cars, take my time and listen to the birds and insects. It is the privilege of traveling at the speed of butterflies and being able to stop whenever and wherever you want to soak up the energy and immortalize the beauty of the Living. I saw that Elsa had an old gooseneck bike and my travel bike is also similar with front suspension (in addition to comfort, it considerably reduces the risk of falls) and the famous V-breaks (rim brakes) which are very effective when loaded and going downhill, ensuring progressive braking and do not block the wheels (especially with BBBtristop skates). Is it curious that you didn’t keep your old bike? In addition, when you have a geometry that allows you to stand up straight, it avoids back pain! I advise you as much as possible to eat healthily, to avoid heavy, industrial things like meat and chips, they are really poison without forgetting fast sugars. It’s a fragile balance because gluttony is losing us! How lucky is this medieval hotel with these herbal preparations^^ Thank you for this magnificent film and have a good trip^^ PS to purify tap water, I use a little of these charcoal and magnesium granules (they are found in these cartridges to soften the water).

    I want to do van life! Been watching numerous van life channels for years now. I’m currently looking at minivans and trying to decide which make/model to go with. I know that Toyota and Honda are supposed to be the most reliable, but I LOVE that Stow-and-Go seat feature that I found on the Chrysler Pacifica. I didn’t know that the Dodge Caravan ALSO has it! COOL! My question is… how reliable has your Dodge Caravan been? Have you had any major problems/mechanical issues? Have you had any expensive major repairs? How many days out of the last 4 years has it been in the shop? Do you budget for a certain amount of repairs (including hotel stays) while a garage is working on your home? I’m just trying to figure out how to handle that AND to choose the most reliable van within my budget to hopefully MINIMIZE time spent in repair shops. THANKS! Great video, btw! 👍👍

    • @RyanKodakBrown
      @RyanKodakBrown Před 19 dny

      Hello! The van was incredibly reliable for four years and tens of thousands of miles. I must have put 50k or more on it. 60k? Not even sure anymore. Anyway, it only went into the shop for oil changes until 130k miles. Then, the transmission started to go bad. It's a known issue with certain model years. You could avoid those years or budget for it just in case. With any van, it's good to have some money set aside because break downs can happen with any vehicle at any time. Hopefully, it's as rare as my experience! My advice: Toyotas as super reliable and they hold resell really well. For me though, I didn't find it worth spending thousands more upfront. Best of luck to you! Happy trails!
