Might have two comments for this one but here’s the first for now. As a married person I’ll say that it takes a lot of work. Even if the spark is there you do have to nurture the flame. I’ve found chemistry, communication and shared values go a long way. Loyalty is of course a factor too. You have to be aligned with your partner on the type of relationship you want and the type of life you want too. I recommend reading the 80/80 marriage. It was extremely helpful in my marriage.

I’m kinda in a tricky situation. I have a friend who unfortunately has earned the wrath of my other friends and they all stopped talking to her. But I still keep in contact with her (though not as frequently) because we were friends since childhood and she wasn’t always this difficult (she was and still is in a transitioning phase). Though I keep boundaries now, I can’t bring myself to completely cut her off because we know each other for 20+ years. Yep history plays a role. I think if your significant other demands you to choose, no matter how close you are, that’s a deck move. And probably not a healthy relationship. Your significant other is supposed to be your helper, and that is definitely not helping.

Great pod. So, what I’ll say is whether it’s friendships, romantic relationships or family loyalty is important and so is accountability. If someone is disrespecting someone for instance and it’s a friends or a mutual acquaintance and they’re not being accountable then it’s time to reevaluate. Not cutting someone off but giving the, the opportunity to find the answer themselves. In terms of a romantic relationship no one should ever make you “choose” to cut off a friendship unless that person is harming you or being toxic in some way. I’ve been on both sides and it’s a very nuanced conversation. Again, great pod. Please do more like this.

Interesting episode, I would definitely like to hear more of your opinions on bonds. For the first question, I don't have many friends so the ones I have are very valuable to me. My father insulted my friend to me one time, for his political views. i didn't speak to my father again for four years. You can insult me as much as you want but insult my friends and I am done with you. On the second point you made I also disagree, I think your spouse should be second to none in your world or you shouldn't be with them. Obviously I wouldn't pick someone who made me give up other people or choose her over my family, but I would if I had to.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is Korean-Canadian. I get what you're saying about the nostalgia of Iroh's voice, but getting him to put on a fake Japanese accent would be kind of disrespectful IMO, both to his own heritage and to Mako. It's better that he can act his own take on Iroh rather than just trying to copy someone else's performance. It took me a few episodes, but Paul nailed the deal for me in ep 4, so I guess we'll see if he grows on you by the time I get there 🙂
