I had the least amount of fun playing this one of the initial trilogy. I still have my walkthrough book and I will probably use it again when I play the remaster. Standout unpleasantries--crystals being back, the constant darkness, getting lost in the subway level, and the mine cart sections. I'm looking forward to seeing how it feels to me all these years later with the updated version. Oh yeah--I also got very impatient with how much time it took to crawl in and out of spaces when I had to do it over and over because being lost or dying.

I dont think lost city is the hardest but those wasps make the level so annoying everytime I play it. Personally I found Luds gate to be the hardest.

The first game I played on mute because Lara's cronies almost never shuts up

This game really just needs a couple of people to sit down for three months and iron it out. The environmental design is really confident, and a few solid rounds of tweaks and adjustments would have really filed down the edges.

I got TR3 at the same time I got my PS1. I had never played the other TR games. So not only was I trying to learn Tomb Raider controls and all that stuff, I was also learning the PlayStation controller. It took me months of beating my head against the wall to beat it. For weeks I thought that London might be totally impossible. It’s the hardest game I’ve ever played. Beating TR3 with zero help is definitely my biggest achievement in gaming.

It’s weird when you realize Tomb Raider started the annualized franchise trend so many other games would later follow. And I kinda miss its formula of each new entry basically requiring playing the previous ones, because each new entry would up the challenge (up until a reset post TR4). So many of the new annualized franchise releases start with a tutorial… for a game we all know how to play. Not Tomb Raider. Tomb Raiders start where the previous left off and it is glorious.

TR4 is the hardest one, but it will get easy in a remaster with modern ctrls, just like TR3

A lot of cryptic puzzles could have been easily fixed by Lara using her journal. Not to write actual answers for the puzzles, just hints so you don't have to aimlessly wonder around what to do.

it's a fun game and that's why it sells better but is it really a tomb raider game?? it's not to most of the fans and you are right about everything you've said.. what makes tomb raider game a tomb raider game is the tombs the atmosphere the loneliness.. damn even the colors where vibrant back in the day.. my experience was the same when I first played it and I really thought this was a random game that the seller used the tomb raider name on it to trick me

Not really a tomb raider game but it was rather good even though it has its problems.

I was never able to get through the "great wall" level as a kid. I recently played tr 1 and had a blast. before I decided to get to tr 2 the remasters were announced and I'm just kinda waiting for a good sale.

I actually really liked this TR. It's definitely one of my favourite games of all time

The biggest crime was taking Lara Croft from a confident, witty and sassy lady to a crybaby who is insecure in herself.

I liked this game, despite its shortcomings. Rise was really disappointing, and Shadow is just trash.

While I enjoyed this game a lot, I agree in a heartbeat that it is not Tomb Raider, except for some moments here and there. And I was thinking all this time it is normal she is not badass here in her first adventure, which you summarily debunked by showing the classic 16 years old Lara's behavior lol.

It's a good game but it doesn't feel like Tomb Raider to me. I did enjoy it and complete it though. I wanted raiding of Tombs and that wasn't much in it... like the start of Raiders of the Lost Ark. And you can't always explore, I wanted to explore the Big Haunted Fortress but you're not allowed to. If you could try but you get killed I think it's better than just not letting you at all.

1:45 Not really. I was born in 86 and gave a lot of the new games a fair shake. You're absolutely right to gate keep certain things. There are certain criteria that are hard baked into game franchises. Like Banjo and Kazooie. Completely changed the franchise from its criteria, and it flopped, and rightfully so. I'm not a Banjo and Kazooie fan, btw. Just figured I'd make it my example.

I agree. My brother played it, loved it, and recommended it. I bought it dirt cheap with all the DLC. I finished it in 2 days because the gameplay was stupid easy. So were the puzzles, and I was playing on the hardest difficulty. I didn't like the story and the fact that they had to kill her white mentor in order to teach her a lesson she had already learned. At the beginning of the game. It's okay, though. She got his pistols!

There's definitely a lot of problems with this game. "Oh no, killing is so hard, I'm so torn" _five minutes later_ "This bow works wonders for murdering!". Lara also became really whiny, complaining at every little thing. Also the constant scenes where everything topples around her like a stack of dominos was just so ridiculous. You could tell just from looking that there was going be some silly bombastic "press X to not die" sequence about to happen. Also I'm convinced she died when she first got impaled and has just been a revenant since then in the remaining parts of the trilogy.

I agree that it's not a tomb raider game. It's an entertaining game to play, and I enjoyed it, but it's not Tomb Raider. Interesting point to note: the sales of the 1st (1996) and 2nd (1997) original games totalled roughly $14 million and $13 million respectively when adjusted for inflation, so they still did the same or better as the newer games

So in short, what most Tomb Raider games rely on is exploration and platforming, 2013 takes a step back and limits these core elements, replacing them with bland third person cover-shooting, and a lot of heavily scripted and contrived action sequences that feel closer to interactive cutscenes... whether that's good or bad for the franchise, it's up to you to decide.

Glad that TR is a franchise that can evolve and try different things. Want a dungeon crawler? play Temple of Osiris. Want a board game puzzle aesthetic? Lara Croft Go? Want to wash her house? Power Wash Simulator. If we can call Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness a real game then Tomb Raider 2013 is one too.

What kind of texture filter you use? that looks awesome! BTW I didn't like TR2 back in the day, but I really enjoyed it in the remaster.

Why no love? You literally told all the negative things about the game in the video, that's why. I replayed it lately. and I absolutely love how lara looks, the voice acting, the graphics, the fantastic music. But the whole "boss" sequence is so tedious it ruined the whole game for me.

I own all tomb raider games except angel of darkness and thought this game was pretty good.

I honestly think TR2 is far more difficult than TR3.

Primal I really enjoyed, you just had to turn your brain off whenever Jen started whining about her _clearly evil antagonist_ boyfriend and how much she loved and missed him and such. I feel it's like a 7/10 game - flawed, but if you get past those flaws, some parts that are really enjoyable.

I don't know why but I never found Aldwych difficult.
