    Thank you for making such a straightforward tutorial. So much less daunting. I have a nice shirt to use as a template but it has bust darts at the front. Will this make a difference?

    • @RefashioningWithRachel
      @RefashioningWithRachel Před 2 dny

      Thank you for the compliments! I don't think bust darts will make a difference. Actually, they will probably add some shape to the finished dress. I would love to see a pic if you do this project.

    Love all your upcycles. But I have a question on this one. It looks to me like you lowered the neckline a bit on the finished dress. How did you do that?

    • @RefashioningWithRachel
      @RefashioningWithRachel Před 19 dny

      Thank you far watching my videos! I actually did not change the neckline at all. I only changed the side seems and armhole seems. It just falls on my body differently after the alterations. I think on the "before" pic, I pulled the shirt a little more toward the back. So the neckline looks higher.

    I thrifted a few good quality men's shirt and was looking for ideas to up cycle them. I went through at least 15 videos, this is the one for me! I love A-line skirt /dresses. The only concern I have is that the dress might be too short for me as I am 5'4" and don't like skirt too short. I am thinking to add a ruffle on the bottom, but then it breaks the A-lines. Any ideas to add length without changing the A-line shape?

    • @RefashioningWithRachel
      @RefashioningWithRachel Před měsícem

      Great question. You could try adding a strip of fabric at the waist. I'm thinking of doing a video about that soon. Also, it helps to start out with the biggest shirt you can find. Sometimes I an able to thrift shirts that are 4x large. They almost go to the floor on me! I have a stash of those but I don't want to make videos with them because I think it might be hard for other people to find them. But definitely I recommend starting with the biggest shirt you can find.

  • @littlelady7843
    @littlelady7843 Před měsícem

    You are so talented! I learned quite a few new tricks. For example, use the thin strip of fabric to finish the neck hole, so simple and effective. And again, sew the cuff back onto the sleeve. So effective. I learned to sew the cuff with the sandwich method, but it was so hard to avoid fabric spill out on the inside. I had to rework several times to get it right. After watching your video, I am going to try your way. Thank you so much! You deserve a lot more subscribers.

      @RefashioningWithRachel Před měsícem

      Yes, I think in metric but my machine is in inches. I should really choose one moving forward for my videos. Sorry for the confusion. To answer your question, I usually use one cm (1/2 inch) for seam allowance unless I want extra seam allowance for some reason.

    Hello Rachel -- I have watched several of your videos, and have gathered lots of tips for converting a giant man's shirt I have into cute dress -- thanks! But the shirt i have has a giant stiff collar I need to cut off completely. Any suggestions among your many video for a new neckline? Maybe a V, or a circle. I could bias hem the cut-out, but something to watch would be great. If not, no biggie. I'm enjoying watching your videos and collecting the various instructions I need to get the dress I have in my mind. thanks again for your tutorials!

    Fantastic! Even if you hit the half-price sale week at a popular craft/sewing store, the fabric for that dress would cost plenty. What a great idea to find fabric for so much less that's already half made. I'd like to see patch pockets on this dress. I need pockets for phone, etc. even around the house.

    • @RefashioningWithRachel
      @RefashioningWithRachel Před 2 měsíci

      I love the idea of adding pockets! And I'm so glad you like the video. I usually get my thrifted shirts during the day of the week sale when they cost $1.99. A lot of the shirts are nice cotton or linen. And much cheaper than a yard or two of fabric. Plus, it is nice to make something new out of something that would otherwise be thrown away.

    • @RefashioningWithRachel
      @RefashioningWithRachel Před 2 měsíci

      Ah! Yes, but hopefully, the shirt was just thrifted, so you didn't really waste anything special. And it was fun practice. And you could still do something from the scraps of that shirt. I have a pile of failed projects that I'm planning to cut up and turn into a quilt one of these days. I'm also planning to make a video of ideas for scraps of fabric.

    • @RefashioningWithRachel

      Thanks for watching! Pretty much anything with enough stretch is good for undies. So most knits. This project only requires a little fabric, so it's a fun one for scraps or for experimenting with different fabrics. In the end, just choose whatever fabric you like to feel on your skin.

    If you sewed through the cuffs, how did you unbutton to turn them back on the reveal?

    • @RefashioningWithRachel
      @RefashioningWithRachel Před 3 měsíci

      Nice question. I sewed through the cuffs along the underarm seem line which is a few inches away from the button placket. If you look at any button-down shirt and pinch in a little bit of the cuff right where the seem line is, you will see it does not affect the buttons. But you will end up with a seem in the cuff. Which is fine if you sew carefully and make sure the ends line up. Also, finish off the raw edges and stich them down on the inside of the cuff.
