Spring Mountain Bike Maintenance: DO NOT SKIP!
Welcome to episode 8 of Stupid Simple Bike Chat!
#SSBC is exactly as it sounds. I am more of an enduro bro, who cares more about riding my bike, than tinkering with my bike. My friend Matt, from Bootleggers Bikes in Jeffersonville, Vermont, is definitely more of an engineer, who loves to tinker. Together, we are going to break down complicated bike subjects into a simple chat that will help you learn more and enhance your riding. Every episode will be a new and exciting subject, and there are no limits to what we can discuss.
On this episode, we walk you through the wonderful world of spring mountain bike maintenance. We all love our mountain bikes, so it's very important that you prep your bike from top to bottom before you jump into the spring bike season. Taking a little time to tune up your bike in the spring will make sure that you bike is running smoothly, prevent early season failures, and ensure that all of your components last a lot longer.
If you have any added information or insights on a subject, or any suggestions for future videos, don't hesitate to comment below and share. We want this to be a community discussion and welcome all perspectives!
Most importantly, enjoy the video and be sure to leave a comment below and subscribe for more!

Best install video anywhere. Thanks

People that live in the areas where people "boondock" have never heard the term used that way. Guess we really do live in the boondocks.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Great video! I’ve only done Endless Brook because it is so good! I need to experience the rest of the network.
It’s an epic area!
I might return my carbon bar and just get the aluminum
Why?
@@MTBTravelReview just keep hearing about it being more of a safety hazard compare to aluminum but I think it may be okay I’m not going to be doing extreme trails where it would break
@@danemoreno88 I ride insane trials very aggressively and race and have never snapped a carbon bar.
@@MTBTravelReview nice to hear I did everything correctly so I’m confident it should be fine used park tool carbon assembly sac-2 for install and torque to spec
very good explanation
Thank you!
Now the thing I see that I would do different than what everyone is doing is I would make a smaller diameter tube and make it square and depending on the size of your rv/truck/etc you can add rows for what ever volume you need. This distributes the weight evenly and it also is more surface area for the water to heat up. You could also make it hinged so it could be angled toward the sun. I have seen a similar design from a friend and it would get super hot like too hot but that was in Texas. If I knew I would be dealing with that I might make a cold water mix. You could also just make a separate pvc pipe pump that has a valve for filling but also a valve that connects to the water so you could pressurize it first then release it. Then you could judge the size you need for the length of shower you want. I also have a 12v outlet in the back of my Element and I have a airpump for my tires that I could set to 30 psi and just push a button when its starts to fade.
Do they make square pvc?
@@MTBTravelReview just using right angle connectors to form a grid shape.
Good in theory, but every joint is a potential leak, especially when you have a square matrix on top of a moving vehicle. It seems like it would be subject to constant small shear forces just going down the road. The design in the video also allows you to use most of your rack for other things rather than using it just for the solar shower.
Nice video. Great how you start the video and give us all we need and don't just jump in to project. Appreciate it. I have built some off grid outdoor showers that I made a pvc chamber that was separate from an old hot water heater. I would have to pump it like 30 time to get a decent shower. I later found an old vw 12v air pump that ran off a battery. I did'nt take long to pressurize the hot water tank and enjoy a shower with two showerheads at the same time.
Cheers!
Could you do a double capacity by putting a u joint at the front and add another long tube? Also about how much does it weigh with water?
In theory, yes, but pressure would be lost much faster. Also, have to re-pressure between showers and the more volume without water, the harder it will be to pressurize.
Minimum speed is enough for the back wheel to clear the lip before the front wheel begins dropping. Great video series.
Thank you!
I want to do India Nepal travelling by bycycle but No money

I ride my fat bike year round on all terrain. I prefer it over my hardtail mtb. I’m way more confident in the gnar on my fat bike and it’s so much FUN
Awesome 👏🏼👏🏼
Hello, good evening, I am about to do this as a project for the science fair, I wanted to know more about exactly how many times I should pressurize, also if you could give me some suggestions. Thank you!
Very cool. With 1 tank you get two showers, so you have to pressurize twice. I pump to about 30 psi for a 2 and a half minutes of water pressure. Shower turning it on to get wet, then off to soap, then on to rinse.
Curious about the decision to use the WYE hub rather than another elbow at the other end. An elbow would reduce the total number of joints and would reduce the cost, but I may be missing some obvious advantage of the WYE hub.
I can only reach up that high on the roof if I stand on the wheel of my camper. Otherwise I would need to carry around a step stool of some sort.
Glad to see I’m not the only one that sets a million alarms instead of trusting my groggy snooze button skills
Haha yup
Now I know what to do with all the cutoff pieces of wood left over from building my deck. LOL
Absolutely!! Haha
i live in the neighborhood right near there
Epic!
I haven't had a bike for quite some years now, some of these new features are awesome! This is one I definitely want as with the last bike I had I kept the seat down all day (and my knees grew strong AF, yes xD) For a piston that could fail and break your butt.. I would not cut any corners xD This can happen with office chairs too so... yeah, quality control is important. But it'd be out of proportion to use the Bluetooth kind in the bike I have in mind and between the other 2 options I'd prefer mechanical as hydraulics is something I only wanna deal with for the breaks.. but not the cheapest tier of mechanical dropper posts.
Mechanical for the win!
I have one question, could i put 27.5 wheels to this megatower frame? I’m a little guy so its better for me to use 27.5, i just saw a megatower frame
Unsure. Great question for Santa Cruz
For a XC TRAIL bike like the Marin bobcat trail 3 with 25mm inner width rims and 29x2.25 tires, would you put 2.4 inch tires, for riding uphill and downhill single tracks?
Best to ask the bike or wheel manufacturer…
So rad! Reminds me of the old trails that hardy and jersey Dave built many years ago in the same area. Can’t wait for this season!
Yessir!!
The resistance change is manual right?
No.
I've ridden fats (4 & 5 wide tires - studded) not just in snow (4 to 5 in w/o deflate) mainly waiting to ice/hard pack & have to say it's a blast, having on a few rides in morn side to side side walks icing (peeps having a time getting around) & have to tell U its an head turner (wondering how in the hell am I riding that thing - needing some ice straps or whatever for u're shoes). Have done mtb patrols (IMBA BP) on 1 as well. Just got a AWD fatty tho snow/ice round my area that's another (if we get 5" around here during the season we're lucky)......
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
Totally bongworthy dude,like,totally...
More potato gun-ish
Fat biking is awesome. I have 2 of them. 1for winter and one for summer.😎👍
Noice!
You guys need to take your pedantic mountain bike snob hats off for a second and explain how fat bikes can be good for just weekend riders who want to ride regular forest single tracks. Like my wife, shes a bit clumsy and a fat bike is alot easier for her to trail ride than a skinny fast mountain bike.
Pedantic? Bahaha. I’m glad you found that a fat bike suits your wife, but I wouldn’t personally recommend a fat bike for a beginner who wants to ride mellow XC. Fat bikes are heavy, slow, and can make mountain biking cumbersome for new riders, IMO. My girlfriend is a clumsy beginner and she is slowly learning to love a 29er. Recommendation: don’t start a comment with an insult. It’s unbecoming.
This might be the most complicated and expensive builds I’ve seen. There are way cheaper ways to do this.
Wasn’t expressive or complicated at all, but I’m excited to watch your video when you make it. Oh wait…
Your flying bro , respect ✌🏻732
Cheers man. 👊🏼
Great video...Thanks!
Cheers!
throw a 1,000 watt hub motor on the back and suddenly the rolling resistance of the fat tires doesn't matter going uphill.
You ain’t wrong there, but I prefer bikes without motors.
@@MTBTravelReview As an old fart, I have heard from many friends that the e-bike got them back outside, back on the road, and back in better shape. That's my current build, a recumbent trike and a hub motor. Best of both worlds. And you can dial down the assist as much as you want. Also great for people who would like to ride together, but have very different abilities. Total respect for those who don't need or want the assist though. Everybody is different, thank God!
@@solarguy6043 oh for sure!! I have no issue with e-bikes for those that have a use. Anybody on a bike is a good day in my book!
What do you think of 36 inner and a 2.35 tires?
Could work in the rear, but I’d go with a bigger tire up front. 2.5 or 2.6
I got the GForm Rugged pads, however as durable as the impact pad is the sleeve itself is not durable and rips easily. I had them less the 9 months and they already have holes. The G2 version/not rugged I have had for over 2 years and has no rips.
Mine haven’t ripped…
You will not like fat biking if you are lazy E biker, that’s for sure
Not all people who use e-bikes are lazy.
hi, i see you have squaredrop and do mountain biking trips. where does your bike live during transport, at night and while you are away from the car/camper? i am currently building my squaredrop and trying to figure out how to store the bike inside. here in CO, leaving bike outside means it will almost certainly get taken. any input appreciated.
My bike either goes in the back of my grand Cherokee or I take the front wheel off and put it into of the camper. Not as bad here as it is out West with theft.
Suggest: when talking about specific-physical elements of the/a bike, show close ups all of them-like you did with tire "width" and studs. And, explain terms; I've been riding for over 50 years and have never heard the terms, "Travel," or "Dropper."
Thank you for the suggestion. Dropper is certainly a newer term, but surprised you haven’t heard of travel.
You are welcome for the suggestion. May I now ask for the answers to the questions?
My new emtb I got a couple weeks ago came with carbon bar's, seems a shame to have to go change them over but man I don't trust carbon in bar's I might run it for a couple rides I've not had the bike out yet due to storm's bit think might be OK with the 170mm fox 38s taking up alot shock but still Don't trust them! I've done some damage to myself before folding a wheel so not really wanting to go through that or worse being of face plant area lol
I’ve ridden carbon wheels and bars since I started and I ride very aggressively. That said, to each their own. Whatever works best for you!
Awesome!!
Thanks!
OK it has been 3 year's. How's the guy doing? Great video btw
He has come a long way!! Have to make up update video someday.
Squeals=fun
Yessir!
Thanks for the good video, and showing me a way to update the one I have. I want to slightly pressurize the water, and the bike valves are a great idea. As you’ve shared your great ides, I’ll share my tip. To mount the shower, I used threaded rods and put fuel line over them. Bent them around to fit over the shower, and then threaded them directly into holes in my cross bars, put nylocks on the bottom, and been going strong for 4 years. 👌🏽🤙🏽
Thanks for the kind words and for the tip. Great idea with the threaded rods!
In MN fat bikes are great our trails are groomed mostly which makes things way easier, fat bikes are all pedal and very little rolling here in the flat Midwest… great to get out in the winter! Nothing like riding in the summer, more of a serious rider thing than something casual…. Bike setup is specialized, lights to see and dress for riding temp not sitting temp is a bit tricky…. I love the technical features in the winter, it makes everything harder, which is good in my opinion!
Sounds like a good time to me! Thanks for sharing
music is cool
Cheers
Only those who have or have tried a FatBike know the unique experience of cycling on all surfaces without ever putting the fun aside. The trails and mountains take on another charm when we pedal a Fatbike. First it's strange, then it sinks in. It's a real addiction. Keep enjoying your fatbike. Happy cycling. Greetings from Portugal.
Greetings and thanks for commenting!
Loved the soundtrack....can you give us the artists & tracks?
Lol
If your fatbike is slower than maybe you are doing something wrong? When I ride mine here in the mountains it may take a bit to get it rolling, but once it rolls, there is no stopping it, there is always traction which means I can ride no problem where regular MTB struggles. It can jump, it can do salto, you can go uphill well due to the traction... it is definitely my funbike :D
Glad you love it! Any bike that is fun for you is good with me. That said, a fat bike will always be slower than my 29er, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun.
Interesting i seen Berm peaks review on them lately they fell apart branded dangerous by them so put me off
I no longer run these grips…
Haha! No skidding! Cmon Brian! Trail foul!
Right!
