I know my response is very late, however, I just got an Osprey pack and sized down. I had to hyper extend the back @3:31 about an inch from the last marking, but it fits great now! Unless you need the volume from the larger pack, I'd size down to cut weight.

Find an osprey proshop if you have one near you.

Mark Turner use a fabric measuring tape. It’s soft. You can find it at craft and sewing stores or sections at your local grocery store. It’s a few dollars.

For the record I have that same pack, in a Large. I'm 6'3" and have a probably pretty long torso.

I am 164, 63 kilos, and i also feel that the hipbelt is a bit big, they show it is adjustable by pushing a part inside but when i try it it just does not move. Can i have someone help me please? From osprey customer service? I am very worried especially for my back. I even carried it with a lot less weight on a hike and it was so difficult. I just think i have not adjusted it correctly. if the hipbelt is adjustable and the torso... But i dont know what the issue is. Waiting for a kind reply

I feel this is the eternal question for us women. I was raised in the religion that it shout sit exactly on thw hip bone, that is, having the bone right in the middle of the hip belt. In real life, however, hip belts just don't remain there (nothing to do with brands, I think). I have sort of wide hips and a narrow waist: it just slides up as I walk. I gave up years ago, and now I aim for *on top of* the bone from the outset. Side note: I've always been instructed by male mountaineers... bummer.

I'm late to the party, yet here's my two cents for anyone still reading for advice. Rest the belt where it feels most comfortable. For me, it's more natural to rest the pack on top of my hips; none of the weight is carried on my shoulders there. However, I have a bit of a lower tummy pouch from cysts and polyps (sorry for TMI) and I feel like it just squeezes even more of my gut down. So I settled and put it about 1/3 of the way. Lol, this way the belt snatches up my tummy and I just carry a little bit of weight on my shoulders.

Joel Cedric Best to measure your torso to find out what is right for you. Plenty of Videos on CZcams explaining how to have your torso measured. According to some trustworthy online websites: if your torso falls somewhere between 16-18.5" then you will need to go with the S/M size, and 18.5 and beyond then you'll need to go with the M/L size

It depends on the backpack and the length of your torso. Small for one pack may be a diff measurement than a small for another. Good luck!

Im 5’7” too 32 waist. My torso measured 18 inches. I could get either S/M or M/L

I bought a Deuter at REI. The salesperson took all the time I needed to find the right pack and make sure it fit. For backpacks and boots especially, you need expert advice and someone who is willing to take whatever time is necessary to make sure you are buying the right equipment.

Find a good discussion group for backpacking. This is a good one -- caminodesantiago.me. Leave a post with your height and weight and ask what size backpack people have used who are your same size. The good packs -- Deuter and Osprey among others -- will be adjustable so you can fine-tune yours, as long as you get the right size to start with.

DeMar Southard people who are the exact same height and weight can and will have different torso sizes. Best way is always has been always will be measure your torso length how somebody help you with a soft tape measure and measure your torso length. Then when you go backpack shopping you look at what the Torso length is. Most all backpacks will state a torso fit range. Find one that has your torso range.

+Jean Clough I had the same issue at REI as well. Very disappointed as I really wanted to pick up my pack, but I did not feel like I was sized correctly (now I realize I wasn't after watching this) - also received no further assistance after the dodgy sizing.

+Jean Clough Just came back from REI Tacoma WA and the sales person spent over an hour with me using the exact measuring tools shown in the video.

Ive had myself and several friends sized at our REI in town and all went great except one who was completely clueless. If you dont get proper help you can always ask someone else. There is almost always at least one person in the store who is very knowledgeable about the gear and how to size. And if you get a pack and it doesnt fit right, go back to the store. They have a great return policy and will always try to help fix it for you. My gf had to exchange a pack after a trip because it just wasnt fitting right on the trail. They were glad to help and set us up with a much better fitting pack.

I'd like to buy this pack from REI, but they said you can only send it to Osprey for free repairs if you buy it directly from Osprey... Plus I live at least an hour and a half from any Osprey carrier. I am really worried about sizing though : (((. I'm 5'6 and measuring my torso I'm not sure at what spot is the absolute correct one. I think I have a 20 inch torso wich qualifies for a M size (or 17 if I'm not measuring from the right spot on my hips, wich would be at the top end for small), usually I'm a small in most things. Would there be a significant issue if I went with the small size that's supposed to go up to 18 inches? assuming I measured my torso correctly at 20 inches? Another thing to note is that a REI employee I was talking to over the phone said he's 5'6 too, and was really persistent I go with the Medium.

I found the correct size but the shop was out of order so I end up buying it on Webtogs.com instead.
