It’s wild how musically literate and inventive Donald is. Dude is for sure a genius.
That's konstantin kisin
A true master of his craft
Donald explaining music to us in a way most of us cannot understand. Peggy loves you
A great example of how you really don't need that many alterations to create something new out of standard harmonic material.
Wow!!!
F*cking GENIUS.
Sheer musical genius.
Rick Beato needs to interview this dude.
Getting less likely with Donald's personal matters.
Omg I almost clapped at the end of this!!
The feeling process was very interesting.. Thanks
Guy is a total hack. He isn’t blues he isn’t jazz, but wishes. Called wannabe
And who the fuck are you jon?😂😂😂
The First Half of the 70's was All About the reintroduction of Major chords into "Pop" music.
The amazing thing is he gets all the theory. All the chord construction. But he puts it together in the most tasty way And then he takes the whole thing and creates hits.
Have you ever notice how Steely Dan's imitators, like Rupert Holmes, Christopher Cross, Ambrosia, etc. became known decades later as Yacht Rock, but not Steely Dan. They're their own genre.
So cool to hear how he constructs these songs.
Genius. Mixes blues and jazz
That chord @ 1:31 is the same chord Larry Carlton used to open 'Dont Take Me Alive'❤
Donald Fagen come back! The world needs you! I never thought about Peg as blues but he makes sense. It is a plagal cadence too! Wow.
I learned to play this in '79 on piano, then played it on guitar as a cover in a metal band I played in on the Sunset Strip in '86. It went over well. Great song, but it works best when played as close to the record as possible, and nobody plays it like Donald and company.
I would really love to hear a metal band in 86 cover Peg
Great, video!!! Genius in action , indeed.
So glad CZcams exists
He’s forgotten more about music than I’ll ever know

I remember seeing this clip about 5 years ago and having no clue what he was talking about. It feels amazing to watch it now and go "oh yeah!"
Absolutely incredible to hear how this masterpiece of a Pop/Jazz/Rock/Blues song was created.
yeah the uplifting twist that is the soul-enriching Steely Dan
Fagen is a genius.
I saw Steely Dan, at great Woods in Massachusetts, the 10th row, I could see the caps on Donalds teeth. It was an amazing show! Hit after hit.
That was awesome, pt. 2.
That was awesome.
Wow. What a treat. Thanks!🎉

Steely Dan music - the ultimate medium for the jazz/rock guitar solo.
Sogood!
I feel like a 6 year-old watching Jeopardy. But I love this!
12 bar major progression, "bright" blues though neither used that word, stacking the 4th, the diminished 5th "bebop turn around" bridge is just complete off the wall mental high jinx, it's really not all that complex just a lot of figuring out what you can do then figuring out what you SHOULD do.. as he put it: @3:30 "you have to know where you can do that and where it sounds good".. right in the middle of his chord breakdown, you still have to know what sounds good. Great Song Writing 101 - D. Fagen The song would have been perfect alone, as is, just like that but this is no ordinary GREAT band or musician group, no, first we blend Michael McDonald layered backing vocals, have Chuck Rainey slap an octave.. and to top it all off, out of no where comes Jay Graydon, funking up his Hawaiian styled blues solo that is absolute perfection. and that's why nobody can ever touch the all time legend, Steely Dan.
He makes it sound so easy. It's only the best pop song ever written.
Fuckin’ nerd! I wish I could say that in a bad way but this man has a musical understanding that I can’t even wrap my head around but, hearing him describe it makes perfect sense. Dick! Steely Dan is amazing. Again, Dick! Do we all have to feel inferior?
They set the bar and it's very high
Light years ahead of the times
We need more Jazz Rock bands . You have to wonder with all the popular music on the radio why don’t we hear more from the Jazz musicians
