Thank you. But I suppose, this shrinkage and separation can happen to any wooden furnuture, made of real wood, for example ten or twenty years may result in this. Am I right?
Thanks for your interest in our video! While you are right that wood separation and shrinkage happens to all wood over time, it is a matter of degree when judging whether something is an antique. Something that is a true antique, meaning it is over 100 years, will have much wider and significant shrinkage than something that is only 10 or 20 years, where one would expect to see considerably less shrinkage. However, shrinkage is just one clue when it comes to judging the age of furniture. I recently made a six-part series about how to be an Antique Detective: How to Tell if Furniture is Antique? I understand that Americans are very interested in history and antiques as a way of getting to know their roots. However in the quest for making how people lived in the 1800s to how people live now many facets are ignored. The concept of department stores or large shops wasn't a thing. Furniture and decorative items were still bespoke made by individual craftsmen. They usually set up a shop in a town and advertised in the local newspapers or were recommended by word of mouth. Very few were rich although there were the beginnings of what would be known as the middle class or merchants. The arts and crafts movement was about trying to maintain the craftsmanship in Furniture and home decoration. Back then you would decoate maybe every 5 to 10 years and your Furniture would have to last many years. This is why so many pieces are still around today and are better made than Furniture you can buy these days. The last movement of crafted furniture was in the mid century 20th century, again why so many pieces of Danish and Scandinavian Furniture are still around now and look as good now as the day they left the workshops. Also, for your information there was a similar movement in Poland at the same time as William Morris was involved in the arts & crafts called Young Poland. There was an exhibition of this a few years ago at the William Morris house in Walthamstow which was very interesting. You may be able to get a copy of the book that accompanied that exhibition on amazon
Thanks for watching our channel and adding to the story! :) Yes, many Americans are interested in the history of antiques, and also as a way to participate in the "green economy" by purchasing antique and vintage items instead of new items. We love antiques because of the amazing craftsmanship, high-quality, and durability. The exhibit you mention is very interesting - thanks for bringing it to my attention! I will check it out. Best wishes, Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
The British crafts movement was just a cultural period of crafts. It was not an organised political or technical movement.
@@Art-is-craft thanks for watching our channel! You're right that the Arts and Crafts movement was not an organized political or technical movement. It was an intentional reaction against industrialization by people who desired a return to hand-crafted artisanship. Best wishes, Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
Louis the 14th or 16th? Pecan wood?
I'm not quite clear about your question, but I'm guessing you're asking which Louis was in power before Napoleon's rise to fame? Louis XVI was on the throne at the time of the French Revolution and lost his head to the guillotine. If you're asking about the bed behind me in the video, it is made of mahogany with satinwood inlays, rather than pecan. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching our channel and commenting! It really helps a small business! Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
I'm thankful you were able to take such good care of all your furbabies, they definitely don't live long enough. The last dog I had passed away Dec. 11 2020, her name was Hope. Are any of his old pieces of furniture still in good condition? Like what happens to old furniture as it ages - like if a chair of his, say, was kept and not sat on and not broken or damaged would it degrade over time or anything?
As wood ages, the moisture evaporates and it begins to look dull and faded. However, if furniture is cared for on a regular basis by cleaning and waxing, it can last for hundreds of years in good condition. I have another series here on CZcams about how to be an Antique Detective and figure out the age of a piece of furniture. In this episode, I talk about how wood ages in case you'd like to learn more: czcams.com/video/2Pl6xeRMHmU/video.html I will also have a new series of videos coming up about cleaning, waxing, and caring for your antique pieces. Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss them! :) Thanks for your kind comments! Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
Dynamite!!! Lol I feel this could have been the original Pollock joke. Fascinating history and those penny tiles are gorg.
It is a funny story, although unfortunately someone did lose their life. Thanks for your comment and for watching our channel! :) Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
That's historism late 19th early 20th century, partly machine carved, machine cut wood..... not renaissance.
Thanks for taking the time to comment on our video! I realize this piece is very beautiful and eye-catching, so you may have been distracted from my words by all the pretty details! :) I did immediately describe this piece as Renaissance style and gave an estimated date of 1890 for its production. I did not state, nor have I implied in any way, that this is an actual 15th/16th century piece! I would expect something of that age to be found in a museum or at a Sotheby's auction! :) I do also refer to a much longer video (and tell the viewer to find that video here on our channel) where I give the history of the development of the Renaissance style in the 15th/16th centuries, the hallmarks of the style, and why there was a resurgence of interest in the Renaissance style in the late 19th century. The Renaissance-style Buffet in this video is part of the Renaissance Revival at the end of the 19th century, and I do very clearly date this piece as part of that time period. Here is a link to the longer video, in case you're interested: czcams.com/video/GJbwFkCY7j4/video.html As this piece was created as the Industrial Revolution was really coming into full swing, we do find some parts of the buffet have been cut by machine, however all of the carvings are completely made by hand and demonstrate true artisanship. I do explain the rise of the Industrial Revolution and its impact on furniture production methods in the longer video. Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions for you! Best wishes, Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
This is a stunning piece, i wonder how long it took to build and how many people worked on it. True Artisans.
I agree that it is fascinating to wonder about all the stories attached to antiques - how long it took to build, how many people worked on it, who lived with the piece, how it was used, what personal and world history was witnessed around the piece - so much fun to get lost in the wondering! It is truly a work of art and a fantastic piece! Thanks for your engagement! Aimee at EuroLuxHome.com
