Interpretation is very subjective, but I’ve been a fan of Garbage for a long time and listening to Garbage overall feels to me like an expression of a perspective of a person who is a victim of misogyny, who is not in a position of power and often abused or at least used, but longs to be truly valued (as a person or partner). This person is hurting, perhaps to some degree in denial, and perhaps withdrawn. From this perspective, the lyrics in this and other songs makes sense to me. Not too unlike when someone imagines hurting themselves as a means to get even with some who hurt them because they can’t hurt them directly. In this case, I imagine a woman (because Shirley is a woman) feeling good about feeling bad when something bad happens that also affects the person she loves and also abuses her but doesn’t quite wants to leave. In other songs: I think this same person puts up with her abuser because of being afraid to be alone. I think she finds a way to cope with emotional or even physical abuse in other songs (for example, I’m thinking about Paranoid, Vow, Milk, and The Trick Is to Keep Breathing). But in this song, I sense a bit of an expression of guilty pleasure, more specifically, schadenfreude.

You have summed this song up so well.. thank you , this is exactly what this song was about.. Dolores had taken a break from the band and was at home when she wrote this album. It dedicated to her daughter.. the video for this song is interesting she is chasing a girl in a red coat... through a city.. but i think also she sees visions of her younger self.. that i think she is reflecting on her past.. and she now wants to ensure her daughter's future is different.. thank you for this.. this song has haunted me for years with it beauty and sound

My first time hearing this song I immediately thought of Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. I was stunned to find out this song was written for Chester, and so many others that suffer with mental health issues. What an amazing message. Why are songs like this not peaking at the top of the charts and sitting there for long periods of time? What a powerful song. All of us have a connection to these lyrics if we take a moment to think about what is being said. Music is beautiful. Music like this transcends genres, and resonates with a global audience. I wish radio stations played this instead of some of the crap we hear all the time.
