After traveling the world for many years, I had come to the conclusion that doing things more randomly, without much long-term planning works best for me. I don't get disappointed if things don't go to plan, I get to see things I had often missed out on due to rather rigid travel schedules, etc. Simply put, I seem to enjoy living for the moment more. I do not shy away from good beer along the way either, as few guys from the Czech-lands would. You are more than welcome to join me on my little random, short-notice journeys, anytime, anywhere. Hope you enjoy the ride. And since I started this channel today, on the 1st of January 2023, I wish you all a relaxed, and Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Martin.

I am deeply saddened to let you know that my best friend, and riding partner, Alistair, had passed away last night. I am shocked and devastated. Despite him having quite serious medical issues lately, no-one expected this. A week ago when I spoke to him he sounded normal. Three days ago,at a hospital, he sounded a bit blurry and incoherent. That's the last time I spoke to him. This morning I got...

Wow! Sir, you are very fast in obtaining the visa and posting your video the same day (at least, where I am). Did you stay in Pakse for any length of time (and if so, post any video of that?). Pakse was off limits when I lived in SE asia.
Actually, this time,I just crossed the border back and forth. I had been to Laos several times before.
I assume it will be applied equally at all entry points now. Has anyone had a different experience with this yet?
❤
Cooler season is better for me 😊
Hi, I used to sit in the cafe behind me in this video and would talk to Alistair for long periods of time when it was pissing in previous years.. That's why I became melancholic this time around...
Our first year in Thailand we arrived in the rainy season. We looked forward to the 'cool' season, and enjoyed the first part of that. During the cool season I flew around the country to the north and northeast on business, and from the air you could see all these farmers burning crop fields in preparation for a new planting season. Sense smoke from probably thousands of fires. Smoke went everywhere and traveled for hundreds of miles. Got so you could smell in in Bangkok. Also, without rain, everything turned brown and dusty. We got to miss the normal green of the plant life. Then the weather started turning HOT. By this time, really, really missing the rain - and being rained on. For all succeeding years in Thailand, we vastly preferred the rainy season. Most days the rain is interspersed with sunshine, and if you got wet, you'd dry off fast. Rainy season in Thailand is the best season. With the double bonus, being 'off season', many things are cheaper and more available. Had a snorkel on the exhaust pipe of our car, which could go through most flooded streets without problem. In addition, watching the fantastic lightening storms from our balcony was a favorite activity. Great fireworks show! Was a pleasant six years. Enjoyed your video with the rain. I think loving the rainy season is something only those that have lived there more than a year can appreciate.
I agree and thanks for the wonderful comment. The rainy season is magical.
Which is your favorite season in Thailand?
1993 the year I was born in this city. ❤

thanks for the video , is the vibe there nice ?
Hi, I'd say it's cosier and friendlier than Soi 6 in Pattaya.
Cheers enjoyed your walk around, river looks awesome there 😊
Looks nice and civilised these days. Somehow,I liked the old anarchy even better.. haha
Adding those photos at the end added a nice perspective on the preceding video.
yeah thanks...I suppose it lends more credibility to the footage...
that was very interesting , thank you is weed still freely available there ?
In the early 1990s they served it like peanuts,in a bowl for all to enjoy ! 1kg used to cost 1 usd! It was a different world..... very different...
In Pai, Thailand it is now. See video about PAI...

Not only was I a young man back then, but the situation for foreigners, especially Westerners, was far better back then than it is today.. Small.wonder my memories are so great!

Hi , enjoyed watching thanks 🙏👋
Most welcome! Thanks!
A bit similar, both nice places to spend some time. Lao influence in Chiang Khan, southern Chinese in Pai.
Well summed up. And they are both very relaxed.
Yes, but a long time ago, in a different age. Beautiful area for sure. Of what I saw in your vid, it's unusual in that it hasn't changed that much in nearly 40 years. Some bigger hotels, I guess. Loved the laid back atmosphere back then, too. Mountains 360 degrees around the city - beautiful.
Actually, in the town, there aren't any bigger hotels even today.. it's still very laid back..surely not like 30 years ago,but at least somewhat...
Chiang Khan reminds me of Pai. Anyone feels the same way?
I found Loei to be a charming and laid-back place. Has anyone been there?
I'm Sorry to hear you lost your Friend. I really enjoyed your 30 happy years in Thailand series, must've been a magical time particularly in those early years. I hope you keep having adventures and riding on.
Hi,thanks for this. I am on a ride in Loei right now. The video should be posted tomorrow. Cheers!
Very sorry to hear you're about to lose a cherished friend. We only have a lease on life. Stay strong and positive. Alistair would want that, I'm sure . You had great journeys with him and will still have more as you're a resilient adventurer . You're doing it for all of us following you from our armchairs . Your reports are inspiring. Don't give up!
Thank you for this much needed encouragement! I need to pull myself together...
@@onshortnotice9600on another tract...Martin. My guess is that you're in your 60s. You were a very good looking young man, in those days Thai girls would have fallen head over heels in love with you . You had lots of fun and you chose the single life and adventures as opposed to settling down with a young lady. I'm sure you didn't regret it . But life is a progress and different stages due to aging . Alistair's fate proves it . You squeezed a lot of experiences out of the past 30 + years . You like to wing it instead of planning it as it may bore you . There is always the Middle Way as Buddhism preaches it . It maybe more appropriate for you to put down permanent roots with a nice lady and still enjoy bike trips when you need a break Maybe Alistair's passing is a catalyst? What do you think?
Tom, your advice makes perfect sense,of course.. Not sure if I'm willing, or even able to take it, at this point.. Al's passing has hit me like a speeding truck.. The majority of my nike trips were solo, but even then,we were always in touch on the phone. Every single day. He was a genuine kindred spirit. We had so much in common. But even he told me I did the right thing not to marry, and if he could do everything all over again,he would have stayed single after coming to Thailand...haha... So.go figure.... But I.most appreciate your well intentioned comments. Thank you so much and keep in touch! There is a lot of truth in what you wrote,no doubt. .
Ok Martin you got to do as you want. I'm opposite to Alistair's advice, I never wanted to live alone and got married, more than once . I had a friend, way back, older than me who was married 4 times. When I said he failed he replied on the contrary, it was a success,4 women were so attracted to him willing to marry . Haha..this was in America .Just a different spin on marriage . Anyway whatever you do I wish you well take care and ride safely. Helmet jacket,etc..
@consulthai Glad to hear your marriage in Thailand has been successful! When a marriage works out, it's wonderful. Enjoy, and thanks for the good advice! Pity I'm no longer in Chiang Mai, would certainty enjoy a beer or coffee with you.
Just finished watching all 4 parts . I think I maybe a generation older than you, the first time I landed in Thailand was 1978 and at the time I was older than your first time. I can relate to many things you documented in pictures except for the motor bikes . I'm now living in Chiang mai so if you're ever here again we could catch up and reminisce about the old days . You're a great adventurer!
Absolutely,I'd love to. But it just so happens I had left Chiang Mai the day before yesterday....Murphy's law ,once again.. Anyways, keep in touch. Glad.you could relate to those videos. We'll meet up next time I'm in town...
It's been a long day without you, my friend..🎶 Take care✊🏻
Much appreciated!😊
This is devastating for you & it's totally understandable how you feel. Don't be sorry for anything, speak out as much as you feel you need. Think of the great times you had together, cherish those memories & also do what your friend would wish for you...carry on biking & on your travels, he'll always be there with you. Take care
Thanks so much!
Very sorry for the loss of your friend. Condolences,🙏😔 take time to heal he would want you to keep going and enjoy your life adventures and traveling. Take care now🙏

Anyone out there attempted long distance touring?
I was at the nearby Oasis, 35 years ago. Why did we choose those hotels as they were quite far from walking street ? Were there no hotels in town ? I dont remember. Did you notice that the coreans have taken over 70% of the walking street bars, according to a philippino friend.
I also stayed there a couple of times... At the time, they offered higher comfort and tranquility than the hotels near the action. And both hotels provided free shuttle service to main drag,so it wasn't a problem getting in and out,I think.
Very nice stories of the days gone by Thailand. Im binge watching your videos.
