He was living in the past. Wanting someone and something he can’t have anymore and that made him miss and ignore everything and everyone in the present. When the old man dies he realizes this and “wakes up”…. He now has a pep in his step which represents acceptance and peace and joy .. That’s my interpretation anyway 😊

Senti la pioggia, il mare, lo scricchiolio della porta, la neve che cade, il ghiaccio calpestato, il vento, il miagolio dei gatti, la gente che piange il buon Ivo, la chitarra, il pennello sul foglio con cui Noah dipinge d'azzurro la coda del pesce, il clarinetto, il pianoforte, l'acqua spostata dai pesci,... sembra di esserci dentro. There are plenty of fish in the sea, but there is only one...and wheh it's gone....

I didn’t quite understand the message of the story. I usually need 2-3 watches before i get it. I guess the fishing pole and the lamppost represent the same thing. A fishing pole takes fish, but a lamppost gives light. Perhaps the message is, “rather than spend your life taking gratuitously, spend your life giving thanklessly’.

Holds additional meaning if you're angler~saxon

The angler went from being happy when with his loving wife... To sad, lonely, depressed because of her death. He missed her so much that he couldn't lIve without her... To come out of his shell and have friends over at his house signifies his acceptance that he knows she's never coming back and it's time to move on. Because time waits for no man. We all die in the end. But with time the heart heals. Even though he's still empty inside, he's trying to open up to friendship again. Which means he's now at peace. A happy ending, considering the circumstances.

There's plenty of fish in the sea... Until the angler comes along...
