I'm a cyclist, and so many times dog owners see you coming and call their dogs - which sometimes means they are distracted and cross in front of you! Please, dog owners, unless your dog is aggressive, just let it interact with the oncoming cyclist. It's usually the best way, and the dogs learn easier.

Sounds great in theory but my dogs weighs more than me and if he sees a squirrel, cat or anything of the kind, he takes off like a bullet and literally drags me. Next time I'll get a smaller dog.🙃

How do you do this with a dog that constantly pulls hard enough to choke itself and tries to jump under every car that passes?

I didn't realize how important it was to teach this to my puppy. With this technique he caught on very quickly. Thank you for this and your other videos, I hope to see new ones soon!

  • @sandieincolorado3024

Thanks so much for this video. My 6 month old puppy pulled like crazy but I followed your advice and in a few short sessions he's already doing a lot better. So simple, so effective. Subscribed 👍

Great tips. But there's something of a caveat. As with many other videos on this subject, you're using an already very well trained dog. A very hard pulling, 30kg, headstrong lurcher is a very different prospect. Mine will give great eye contact on a loose lead and as soon as he's praised and rewarded, he'll dash forward, instantly putting huge pressure on the lead. This goes on for entire training walks, with little progress made in almost 14 months. One day he'll walk almost perfectly, the next, it's back to square one.

Yeah true I use my own dogs my video because… well they are my dogs but they were trained using the methods shown in the video. There are lots of methods to train anything and not all dogs respond to each method. The key to this method is patience and not moving to the next step before you’re are great at previous step.

ON contrary to what was said about leadership, I do not believe the dog pull "just because of the fun of it". I do believe it has to do with leadership, and taking control of the walk is only one part... then there is food....who has control over food...and then there is danger... who takes care of the pack when danger appears. If the dog has taken on the role of leader - which by the way is given to the dog by the human cos we are not aware of the canine language, then there will be serious pulling on the lead. The practise here is good, but equally important is to recognize WHY the dog pulls. I would just stop, turn around and walk the other way, NO pulling, but yes - the dog need to follow. And does not matter if I do not get far, walking back and forth is also a walk, and the dog get's the right answer every time to the question "who is leading the pack?". By turning around - no pulling, no wording, no eye contact, your message is loud and clear " I am and you do not have to worry about it". Good luck ! :)

Check out peach on a leash too. The GSD drops an entire hotdog that was in his mouth. I actually got my Dobe to drop a live Ground hog and a possum - believe it or not. TY for the positive way of teaching this as well. Hope that helps.

Observation taught me this..... in nature and instinct, when the pack went out to hunt for food, some dogs instinctually knew to move out on the flanks, ahead to scout and encircle prey. My pitty girl (RIP now) would walk out front on way out for walks, but on way back home, she on her own walked aside me. If I dropped the leash, she stopped and waited for me to pick up leash. Over time, when walking, if she was pulling some, I would tell her 'WAIT FOR ME' and stop and she learned to be more paying attention to me. Just took patients, time and understanding
