how many millions did this cost? Funny you say day 1 with no date but the end month and year.what was day 1 2000?? 21 years to build??? trust no one suspect everyone. Obviously you are hiding the truth how long and how much this took.
LOL. The permitting was from 2007-2009. From 2009 to 2018, we slowly removed the hillside, as life, injuries, and more slowed progress. We began building the house at the end of 2018, and completed it in 2021. Nothing is "being hidden" Mr. I-have-the-most-generic-name-in-the US-because-I'm-hiding-my-identity. Oh, the irony...

Great video. Seems to be much more simple than some of the other methods I have seen. Quite a bit more cutting and welding than other options, but no need to buy a pin on kit, which allows the use of less expensive kits. Thanks for the idea. But, I have one question. Did you say what the thickness or gauge of plate you used? I was thinking about using 1/4", but I need to measure the thickness of the back of the bucket to make sure 1/4" isn't overkill.
Generally speaking, when I measured it all out, (my OCD took over.. lol) I found out this way had less overall cutting and welding, and arguably is stronger because the cross brace of the bucket is left on the machine. I have used this a lot, and not had any issues.
@@eddieco Unfortunately, I don't have a plasma torch, but I would love to have one. I will probably use an angle grinder, which will take more time, but I will just have to deal with it until I have a bunch of loose change. Thanks again. You are an inspiration for my next project.

Molto bene grazie frufru.
They do the same shit in Alaska and allegedly its a red state.
Ugh. Sorry to hear that.
I don't think you get to complain, you went from California to Hawaii, two of the most leftist states in the country. I'm pretty sure you knew what to expect.
LOL. In some ways Hawaii is better than CA, in others it's worse. The thing is, they HIDE the bad stuff because, well, tourism. Had we known what we know now? We would have gone to a red state.
@@eddieco It's hard to just mind your own business in a dark blue state, the left like to control everything. There are still areas in the high deserts of Utah or Arizona where there are no building codes or at least very lax where you can do what you want. If I settle down, that's where I'll be looking. Something in the 5-7000 foot elevation with the Pinion Pines and Junipers.
Thank you Im rady to due mine
Very inaccurate review. What's the energy offset? Etc. Let's hear some actual science. Did you use it? How's it work?
@eddieco, this looks so amazing. I love the efficiency of these domes but it seems so dang expense. How does an average Joe afford to have one of these built?!?! 😢
Don't build in a place like Los Angeles, or CA for that matter, and DIY as much of it as you can.
Yep thats the tropics for you. 😊
Did you have to grind/cut the glass or window seal to make it fit properly?
On my 1985 Toyota Pickup I did NOT. However, on my 1987 toyota 4runner, we did have to cut about 1/2" off the bottom.
Wow. Who did the concrete work?? At 10:50 where he's showing 'how to nail', that is a really crappy concrete pour! Honeycombing, cold seams, etc. I'm getting ready to build an earth home in Missouri, and one of the biggest warnings is Get a good concrete contractor, and make sure they do it right! If that was my house, I'd make them wreck those sections out and do it like a professional. What a shame. A lot of money for a terrible pour.

Only thing I don't like well two, those closets and that carpet yuck
The closets are designed to utilize the curved spaces that might otherwise be wasted. Carpet? I'm not a fan of it either, but that's what buyers usually want.

Mudslide is California's #1. That is just arrid dirt waiting for rain
Nope. It's compacted soil that's certified and compacted to 95% compaction, per soils engineering specs.. There's an entire video on that.
@@eddieco how are things holding up after these storms? Hope all is ok
Wat about mud slides?
That's why a soils report and geological report were done, and soils and geo guys observe the compacting and backfilling.
@@eddieco I understand...especially in California and it's a new home and took forever because permits so they know this. All the home insurance companies leaving California or not insuring anymore too
Thats an awesome house!
This is awesome. We should all live like Hobbits
Wow! Where is this place on the Big Island, Northside?
Puna District, not far from the town of Volcano
I don't really like a lot of sunlight, this home has the best neutral lightingz you don't even need to have curtains or windows. Perfect space for gaming, and just chilling. You can get all the light you want in the front.
I've been in several underground homes built into limestone. In Topanga Canyon, I'd pass. One mudslide and the homeowners won't have a fire resistant home any longer.
hahahahaha. There's a reason we had to compact the soil on top, and then plant it... to prevent mudslides. and when a wildfire rips through Topanga, (not if, WHEN) this house will have the best chance of surviving.
Sound appears to be off, too.
Too small
This particular house seems very close end cold and dark. Like a morden-day home built inside a Cave or a abandoned uncomfortable underground 🕳 bunker.
far from it, but thanks for your uneducated, and uninformed opinion.
Cool concept, hideous design.
stupid comment.
What an absolute bore. The facade and interior look like any other current, cheaply made American home. So many missed opportunities, and a massive lack of taste.
as the builder, I would agree that it's not my taste, but it's what everyone wants, so that's why the finishes are what they are. As for "cheap"? Far from it.
All I can say is it's obviously designed by a man. The underearth idea is fine for the area, the first time I saw a Malibu fire was in about 1950, flames right down to PCH. And several times since. But the odd shaped rooms, the rooms are too small and should have used a few of the larger sun tubes. The garage on the side closer to the cyn rd with motorcycles roaring past, more rooms need windows. And the dark counters in the weird kitchen. A single man might like it.
clearly youy didn't bother to watch any of the other videos. There's NO noise in the house, and more than enough light throughout.

Many years ago I had friends who were renting a home in Chatsworth that was partially built into the hillside. It was comfortable and beautiful. And as your plants get growing, it will be much more pleasing looking than the plain dirt. And the placement is perfect to block the noise from that fairly busy road.
I actually built a dome shaped underground house in Chatsworth!
I love this design- more like an earthship than traditional dome home. Does it use geothermal for heating/cooling? The only change I would have done was to incorporate passive solar indoor garden at the entrance & several solar tubes to provide extra lighting throughout the home. They work great. This is absolute perfection. Well done- thanks for sharing.
No deterrent to bad behavior empowers people with bad behavior
Nice build, but why is it called a dome?
Because the structure of the house is in the shape of a dome under the dirt.
@@g.o.b.2558 ahh I see, thanks.
Ive wanted to do something like this on a large canyon property my family owns in San Diego county. It had a house burn down on it 20 years ago. Would you be willing to talk to me about some of the steps it took to get building permits snd what construction methods you used?

When I was growing up in the 60's, in Knob Noster Missouri, (Whiteman Air Force Base area) I had a girlfriend/classmate who's family owned a home just like that on a bunch of acres with no houses around it. It was really fun to go spend the weekend with her and the family,...horse back riding, Snipe huntiing and games. I remember the bedrooms being really dark, which was wonderful for sleeping. Also they were very cool even in the heat of summer. Their house had grass on the top.

Awesome home! What does the garage look like?
Pretty much a standard garage that's 20' deep and 25' wide
It's odd - that is about all it has going for it.
hahaha. That, and it has a 90% reduction in heating and cooling costs, 90% reduction in annual maintenance, is cheap to insure because it's virtually indestructable, and can withstand wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, and more.
im about to put a new quick attach on a new bucket..im not sure how to get it all lined up as in ,do l need to have the skidsteer on a flat floor to get it right?
I'm not sure a few milimeters being off would matter but I would start with level floor and all the tires aired up properly
Great review! LOMI has a good idea, but their execution is bad, resulting in a net negative outcome. This company, like their blender/dehydrator is wasteful, and slimey! Nice try, but this puppy dog don't fly.
Hello from Agoura Hills ! Been watching your videos and this is truly amazing. I know it's been 5 years, but I was wondering what the cost was for the steel dome pieces you got from Arizona. I understand there's a $1,500-$2,500 design fee, but curious what ballpark was for just the steel dome parts you talk about in the video. Thanks a bunch and hope all is well in Hawaii!
If memory serves me correctly, I think the dome kit, which includes the hardware, arched I beams, and the rebar, was around $50K. You'd need to call Formworks Building in Colorado to find out what the price is today, as steel prices have risen and fallen which directly affects the price.
CO2 lasts 300 to 1000 years in the atmosphere. Methane last around 12 years in the atmosphere. CO2 is a much worse greenhouse gas due to time in the atmosphere. Methane though is a powerful greenhouse gas but not that long lasting. Unless you have Solar and or wind for all your electricity it makes no sense for these reasons and all the reasons in the video. Average electricity mix is well over 50% carbon polluting sources i.e. coal and natural gas. Compost outside and regularly stirring the pile very little methane is released. People need to consume less. If you live in an apartment bring your gardening friend your compost.
