Canon 24-105 f2.8 Lens Review : Why Lens Distortion Is For Suckers
Relevant links, Raw files, Ad free on Patreon ► www.patreon.com/posts/109336301/
Summary
This is my full review of the Canon 24-105mm f/2.8 lens and I discuss its design and performance. I highlight that Canon seems to be prioritizing video in their latest releases and that the lens is primarily designed for video use. I mention that the build quality is good and the lens is sharp, but I have issues with the size and distortion correction. I explain that the lens has a wide range of distortion, which requires correction in post-processing, and that Canon does not allow disabling distortion correction in-camera. I also express concerns about relying on software profiles and the loss of resolution due to correction. I conclude by hoping that Canon will head in a different direction with their lens designs.

    Absolutely love this kind of videos and not glazing big corporations … 3k dollars in US , in europe thats more like 3.5k euros … it’s insanely expensive and a product like this shouldn’t rely on software to fix it’s problems. About the auto profiling a lens, i have no idea what setting it is , but there’s definitely an option because everytime i import any picture the proper distortion profile is applied. I thought this was the default setting for LR classic

      i simply can’t understand how the sound of a shutter isn’t a big deal 😂

    • @simplysaso
      @simplysaso Před dnem

      I miss the sound of my mech shutter, but it’s not a deal breaker to me. The Nikon FEELS great to hold and to photograph for me. I’m coming from a XT5, GFX and a R5 and the XT5 had the most satisfying shutter of all time. And yet when I’m out in the field with the Nikon, I just FEEL good. It feels good to compose, to frame, to set the EVF brightness to max and see such a clear image. But that’s just me. I will always miss my shutter on the XT5 but it never made me feel this good. On a side note if you read this. I’m CONFUSED. You’re talking about dynamic range pushing your exposure slider, but your shadows are already boosted? Doesn’t boosting the shadows already start to step into noise so your doing both on top? I haven’t had a noise issue with the Z8, but I am coming from a crop sensor. But comparing it to the GfX I had used I’m not feeling a big difference either.

    • @iamsamhurdphotography
      @iamsamhurdphotography Před dnem

      yeah if the z8 feels good to you then that’s definitely all that matters. as far as dynamic range - the shadows slider vs highlights etc is all about creating an overall look that i like. all the settings you see (other than exposure) are almost always locked in place for any image i edit, whether it needs a lot of dynamic range or not. this enables a lot of consistency in editing, but yes - it will expose sensor noise more quickly. it’s usually not a problem (i’ve used the general same editing preset i made since like 2013), which is why the z8 files surprised me so much

    • @simplysaso
      @simplysaso Před dnem

      So one comment you made in the video seemed oddly deceiving, or maybe over our heads lol At one point your showing a face and your saying look I can still see the face but when I push the exposure slider look at all the noise. But the shadows were already boosted. It seems like unfair comparison. With the shadows being boosted, it was probably almost black. The boosted shadows barely revealed the face, and then of course using the exposure slider is going to generate a ton of noise because it was SO under exposed. If the photo was like that without the shadows being boosted to the max, it would be more understandable. It just either seemed like a habitual oversight or unfair statement on noise.

    • @iamsamhurdphotography
      @iamsamhurdphotography Před dnem

      i’m not entirely sure which moments you’re referring to, but it shouldn’t be deceiving when i always use the same position for the shadow slider on all sensors that i compare. this isn’t a scientific experiment - im just making observations based on how i always edit, which is the same across all camera bodies. there have been numerous other comments stating that adobe botched the camera profile so maybe the sensor doesn’t perform as poorly as it appeared - i don’t really know at this point. all i can share is what i experienced at the place and time

    Yes generally you don't change settings while recording unless you're moving around to different lighting situations (run & gun), but its nice to be able to smoothly change aperture vs click click click. Like ISO is notched, shutter speed is notched, so being able to smoothly transition in video is a nice feature. Yes agreed this is not a photography only lens, seems more of a hybrid and they obviously made some compromises on the wide end, probably to keep it thin...its remarkably grippable I have to say, and I like using the collar as a platform to hold it by putting on a wide flat plate...all subjective of course. The zoom is smooth and easy to move with one finger and the distortion you showed actually wasn't all that unpleasant other than the cut off corners. I shoot a lot of events, promo videos, corporate videos, photography, etc and really look forward to using it for that. I can't tell you how many times I wished my 28-70 had just a bit more reach and a bit more wide angle. So this will be used most of the time and when I need that nice bokeh I'll whip out the 28-70. I used teh f/4 version as my workhorse and in a practical sense, that is the best overall lens for what I do, but now I have one that's a bit sharper and faster. Also , I have been using my R5 and R6 mk II to shoot more video and always feel a little uneasy mounting my body to the tripod with that big ole heavy 28-70 and 85 f/1.2 with no lens support...so now having this lens with the collar I can breath a little easier with a more balanced setup. My colleagues have even felt the R5 II update makes sense if you shoot video too since that has been vastly improved, but photography only...not as compelling.

    I would not mind the distortion that much, BUT, I can not accept that using some of their L glass (e g. 14-35 f4) results in the in-camera distortion correction being enabled and cannot be turned off. AND...this means that multiple exposure (e.g. HDR) is not available.

  • @AliBubba.
    @AliBubba. Před dnem

    How do you feel about the idea of balancing innovation and usability/desirability/price of a lens? Unless I'm mistaken, they're the only manufacturer with an f2.8 at this focal range. If they were to produce the EF style L glass you're used to, what would that look like, what would the weight be and how much would it cost? All the rf glass has some variation of this distortion, but they're smaller and in most cases a pound or more lighter than their EF counterparts. A friend of mine got the 28 to 70 f2, and I shot with it. my God that thing takes some amazing pics. The weight is not an issue for me personally, but it does get annoying after a while... that said, u wound not catch me dead using that thing because of the form factor. I watched a review from another CZcamsr 2 weeks ago on the R1 and he had that beast attached to it. It looked like an inflatable raft, or a capsule that you reenter earth's atmosphere in. It's cartoonish it's so large. So I think it's a matter of making glass with features that current day photographers value, like amazing sharpness and colors, lightweight equipment, etc or a 12 pound lens that costs $1000 per pound.

    • @iamsamhurdphotography
      @iamsamhurdphotography Před dnem

      i really need to put together a double blind test about lens sharpness. i’m pretty sure most photographers still confuse sharpness for af accuracy (because AF was such an issue pre-mirrorless) as the same thing, and that’s the only reason they’re so fixated on sharpness at all. modern photographers are also clearly skewing more towards looks that are analog, flawed, and vintage.

    • @AliBubba.
      @AliBubba. Před dnem

      @@justinburley8659 it actually has a lot to do with it, as it explains his mentality well. Canon should make lenses in the fashion he thinks they should be made, all those things I said be damned, and if you don't agree, you're a "sucker" as the title of the video states and you don't even know what you're talking about or looking at to boot. To put what he said more clearly "I know you're eyes are telling you this is a crazy sharp lens and the images it produces are amazeballs but you don't even know what sharpness is and you should realize that in reality, the lens and it's images suck." This is the equivalent of saying that you're a sucker for buying pottery that is not sourced and handmade by mountain gnomes, because if you look behind the scenes, they're tricking you by making your cup look amazing and weigh way less for cheaper, but it doesn't have real gnome sweat mixed in the clay.

    • @iamsamhurdphotography
      @iamsamhurdphotography Před dnem

      i’m addressing your final sentence - that modern photographers care about sharpness so much. to the rest of your points - i am all for innovation! i own, and have reviewed, the 28-70 too - it’s a marvel of a lens! i’m not really sure what your question or point really was, but my perspective with balancing innovation/usability/cost etc is that the glass should not be designed under the assumption that later steps are required in the editing pipeline to get the same image you see on the back of the camera. at a bare minimum i want to see the true raw file on the back of my camera!

    I always used to equate high end lens manufacturing as being of the same vein as high end watchmaking. A thousand little parts that the wearer will never know or see, put together in an item to fulfil a function. The same way a watchmaker might use a variety of springs, gears, and jewels to regulate timing to within a certain level is probably the same way a lens designer needs to plan around elements, motors, and coatings. It's kinda sad, but inevitable I imagine, that Canon seems to be leaning quite heavily now on software corrections to deliver a usable image. The one at 10:00 is especially egregious and I completely agree with your reasoning; when I am paying this amount of money I really want a product that doesn't completely rely on something like an external profile correction to be usable.

We love our zoo. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
