Full Monty came out at about the same time, but this was I thought the better of the 2 South Yorkshire films. The scene where he’s in Ecclesfield church with the kids, and then totters down the steps in those ridiculous shoes. He’s just ripped your heart out and then you can’t help laugh. Also love the scene where they call Andy a “scab”.

I just had to comment and say this really affected me. Both the musicianship. And the composition itself. Its very primal. Like a forgotten language of some kind, but in music. If that makes sense. All i can say is thank you for producing it. I've listened to the albums on Spotify several times now

A very great reading of this Classic - my only quibble - as will almost all the other recordings out there - is the failure to negotiate the tempi coming out of the second into the third segment, which should be gauged from the bass triplets in the bars before. Failure to do this means the work sounds like an introduction and allegro - as here - instead of a gradually engineered increasing of energy from beginning to end. But there is no gainsaying the sound of Grimethorpe here - brilliant! (Also, is the soprano a few bars out immediately prior to the final big scherzo segment?)

A brilliant film which revisits the miners struggles without any reference to Scargill. It did this by concentrating on the very human stories that emerge when the whole community depends on one industry and everything is being taken away from them with no hope for the future. Pete Postlethwaite's speech near the end had me in tears. The Tories pulled out all the stops to prevent this film from being re-shown leading up to the General Election - and no wonder because it was all so true and heartbreaking with it.

Wonderful, what a film. I remember living near Haworth and sitting listening to the band in the park. In my 80's now the music still makes me emotional. Even watching Bradford Park Avenue play football, standing there with my dad in all weathers with Hammond Sauce Works band playing before the game and at half time. Brass Band music was magical back then and remains so today.

A brilliant film and as an ex coal miner, it brings back a lot of the memories of that particular period. A very fitting story line set with very emotional music. With that cast, the brass band, how could it fail.

Having grown up in County Durham, Brass Bands always touched something in me even before the 80's. Then the wicked witch, then Brassed Off.... I live in Somerset now but any Brass Band always makes me cry, and fills my heart as well. Thank you for keeping the band going and all of your wonderful music. It is as needed now as much as it ever was.

Many thanks for uploading this video. I was very pleased to see at least some of the contributors again. Brassed off is a great film and a wonderful homage to decent normal human beings. The Grimthorpe Band still plays beautifully. It's great that this tradition lives on.

Why oh why isn't this piece used more often? It is, in my opinion, Philip Wilby's best work for band, yet bands keep trotting out the same old pieces year in year out.

And here it is November 4th 2023... I'm a 65 year old American Patriot, who pretty much had lost hope. We have a daft president, Israel is once again at war, the Jewish people fighting for their very existance. Our English brothers and sisters facing the same challeges as the United States! We are standing on the edge of World War Three. And yet here at 4:30 in the morning, watching bits and pieces of this movie that I have never seen entirely, I find peace and the courage to carry on. You see its not whether we win the battle, those of us that believe in God know we will be victorious. Rather its how we carry ourselves, who we help, day to day that writes our history into greatness. May God Bless and keep you, may his face shine on you and grant you peace. ❤

I have been to many concerts/gigs from the Kinks with Kirsty mc.coll, Johnny Cash at Pilton etc. Brass Bands always make me emotional. There is something about that sound that raises the hair on my neck, makes my heart go, and often makes me cry (even the happy ones). I would love to see you live but in the meantime many thanks for putting stuff out there. I love all brass, the Sally Bash do it for me (though they could forget the tambourines). Two bands stick out, the Black Dyke and yourselves but I think you have it. Love'n'light from Glastonbury
