    The bit you called a combo drill and counter sink is called a center drill because it was created to get a center hole on a lathe. The part of the bit your calling a counter sink is designed for the live center on the tail sock of the lathe to keep the part centered. There are woodworking bits that com with replacement drill bits to pre drill the hole and cut a relief for the head of the screw. That may be what you were referring to.

    • @wonbythe1
      @wonbythe1 Před 2 měsíci

      All so true, Grammy. At 0:55 into the video, I did call it a Center Drill. It was at 2:23, where I also mention that "everybody calls it a Center Drill". The technical term might be Combination Drill and Countersink because a true Center Drill has a 60° included angle, but these same tools are also available in 82° and 90°, which are the countersink angles for imperial and metric (respectively) flat head screws. Great input though! And thank you for posting.

    • @wonbythe1
      @wonbythe1 Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Rick. I'm afraid that I don't have good news for you. If your tailstock is lower than the spindle axis, the lathe ways and/or tailstock is/are worn out. If your tailstock is higher, it's probably not made for that lathe make & model, but it's possible that it could be machined down to the correct height.

    • @ricksweetser1683
      @ricksweetser1683 Před 4 měsíci

      Didn't mean I have a tailstock that is lower. I was just proposing a "what if". Besides, if it is lower, than you can easily shim between the base and the tailstock to alleviate the misalignment. And, if it is higher doesn't necessarily mean it was not made for the lathe, just means it came from China.@@wonbythe1

    • @wonbythe1
      @wonbythe1 Před 4 měsíci

      So true, @@ricksweetser1683 If you shim a tailstock, the shims will need to be long enough to bend & secure them on both ends, so they don't slide out when you drag it along the ways.

    I never knew to store them slightly open, bit it makes sense. I thought it would be like drill chucks where you store them closed to keep dist out, but slightly open makes a lot more sense for calipers. If they are closed and warm up, then the expanding materials dont have any room to expand and can cause damage. Thank you for the video 😊

    • @wonbythe1
      @wonbythe1 Před 4 měsíci

      That's another good way to do it, Rob. Most people usually have something they can turn. Another way to do it is to put a center hole in each end of a precision graound rod. Using an alignment tool is just a convenience for some people.
