Modern Era

Been here ,it’s changed a lot though, more touristy
It's sad it's gone 😢
Absolutely! I loved that place as a kid just having freedom to run around, have fun, meet other kids nothing like that for kids these days.
@@livingonthetyneyes different times then
great place to live in
Get Lawrence Olivier to voice over the next one
Born and bted in Dunston 1950
Intu ruined metro, at least they got their karma. I wish they'd add back fountains and more greenery, it was escapism growing up. Now it's bland and the same as everywhere else :(
👏👏 great video, loved the interspersed shots of the photos, could watch that sea all day
Glad you enjoyed it, me too!
Thanks for the film. It brought back ,many memories. I lived in North Shields - right next to the Swan Hunter yard. The sound of the Foghorn, The Whistle and the Incessant sound of skilled men working on huge ships was a part of our life. I used to climb up onto the roofs of the local factories and gaze down onto the hive of Activity that was Swan Hunters. Fire and Steel, Clanging and hammering and sometimes when the buzzer went and all became still, we knew that there had been an Accident. I am 63 now and live abroad - have done for the last 40 years but a bit of the Tyne`s water still runs in my veins. Some time ago I wrote a song about the demise of the Shipyards. You can listen to it here: czcams.com/video/iTqkIsORa-0/video.html
Loved that👍
The Swan on the Tyne is all mine, all mine...
Loved the metrocentre then
While walking from cook house you could go up the steps to Cumberland and turn left, you can then head to the culvert or half way round there’s a set of steps which when turning left at the top leads you round and just beneath the railway bridge saving quite a large set of stairs.
Blighted by Graffiti
I worked for British Shipbuilders in Walker, I think not too far from Swans. The building is long gone now. I think it was at the bottom of Pottery Bank which runs to a dead end. That might have been the road that wen to the front of the building, but I can't find any pics of the building itself.
Great channel New and I’ve turned on the bell . 🛎️ 😊
Thanks appreciate it
St Andrew’s?
Good spot I didn't see I had the wrong title in the thumbnail.
International paints is the name of the white factory pal
The place where the security guard was was still controlled by swan hunters up to 2004 because I worked their as a security guard for chub security
Metroland is like the UK equivalent of Mall Of America.
Misspent youth in jezzie dene. I'm in my seventies now and it's not changed, thankfully. We used to access from Mathew bank, happy days.
As a kid this place was absolutely amazing. So many happy memories here. While the new cinema is really good, it can never replace Metroland. The centre as a whole lost all its character when the green railings and fountains were also taken away
I agree the removal of metroland was a terrible idea.
Where were the sidings?
At 16:01 if you follow the footpath you cross a little bridge and on the other side of that bridge which I walk across on my other video there was a huge sidings, which is all now a housing estate.
I tip my hat to you for the nice long, slow ponderous starting drone shot.... very well done. No rushing, just right. The fact that the wind was bloody horrible! At times I braced myself holding onto the barriers on the Staiths, as some gusts could easily bring down a drone.
Wish I knew this was opened ,I have an interest
Its the River Team known locally as the Gut
I had a feeling it was, appreciate it.
Many thanks.I was last on the staiths during the garden festival.
I was just a small boy when the Garden Festival was on, can't remember what it was like.
Your enthusiasm comes across really clearly.....just a tweak, where you refer to HMS Lion, you have a picture of a damaged HMS Kelly, which fits really well with your narrative on repairing damaged warships, which could be a separate episode for you ?😊.
I worked on the maintenance teams at the beginning of the 80's and have been all over the various components including the pedestrian tunnel.
The Kingsmeadow Haugh being the main reason why the Metrocentre needed substantial underpinning & engineering work in the mid 90s, the M&S end of the centre had started to settle in the sand.
I would like to know how the coal trains were unloaded? Did the shoots move?
Also, you walked down past the entrance to Heaton Park not Armstrong Park :) The sign post had it. Opposite there is the Bluebell pub if you want to do a boozier version of this walk. Great vid again :)
I'll defo check that out, there's some awesome pubs along that walk.
The abandoned building I recall in the mid 80s as a community center. Saw The Bruvas theater group there, films, kids events etc.
Great video - perfect day for it. There is a good pub crawl you can do from quay to south g, via bluebell. Also good route for Geocaching :)
I served my time in the shipyards, there were so many blokes like him worked there complete nutters.
Walked through there in the 1970’s a few times from the Jesmond Vale end, scary stuff I think back. Groups of lads would take torches to make there way under the City stadium (old tip) to the Byker Bridge side.
It's pronounced Elsick - and I'm a Geordie.
My grandfather worked at Swans until 1970, he was a Machine Tool Maker. ****DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT MACHINE TOOL MAKING AT SWAN'S OR HAVE AN IDEA OF WHERE I CAN RESEARCH THIS?**** I'm researching Machine Tool Making with a view to putting it on the record so the part this trade played is captured for posterity. The length of time that it took to train as a Machine Tool Maker meant that during the war this was a reserved occupation, my Grandfather worked at Swans throughout WW2 and wasn't allowed to serve in the forces. If you know anything, leave a comment and i will follow up. Many thanks. (Machine Tool making is the skilled trade often using a lathe that designs and produces the dies, moulds and models for casting components)
22:13 Wow. Blast from the past. I remember jumping off that waterfall when I was a kid. It seemed so high then, now not so much. Fantastic days out on our bikes riding from Montie to Jezzie Dean.
Used to liive in Dunston
Hello . A vrry nice video about local daily life . Nice ! ☀️☀️
☀️☀️👑 Hello . I just stumbled upon your good channel . As a result i do share you on my playlist and more 😉 .. I will most probably be back soon to visit your good content . ☀️ Have a nice day and greetings from France .
the most famous ship made here was the carrier the arked royal.
Thanks for the great memories, I served my apprenticeship as a welder from 1980 to mid 1984, it was a hard but well taught skill that has seen me flourish throughout my life.
I thought you can walk over it? Has it now been blocked off again? What was the big factory that was next to this also? Was it the soap factory or flowermill that got knocked down for the new flats
I will answer the questions about the surrounding factories, a lot has changed, in the bonus video. You can't walk over it now, as there was a second fire by arsonists. Huge shame.
Thanks . What dimensions does it have?
That'll be covered in the Bonus video as there was a few things that did not make the cut for this video. :)
