Thank you for this information! After 13 years, at what I thought, and hoped would be my career in an unrelated field..... I, and my department, are being let go at the end of next month. Yesterday, one of the manufacturing heads came to my desk and told me he wants me to apply for an open metrology position That will be posted at the end of the month. The process shouldn't rely trial-and-error after parts are made, it should be based on tolerance analysis during the design phase. You outline the functional requirements (eg cylinder must fit into bore) and sources of variation (eg feature sizes/position/orientation, assembly, temperature variation) to determine what tolerances are required to meet these requirements. You then work with your manufacturer to see whether they can measure these dimensions and hit these tolerances. Adjust your design if they can't, or make compromises (eg more precise processes, changes to the product size/performance, or accepted yield fallout). You note that a high-precision part doesn't need every dimension to be tight-tolerance, but in addition - forethought can be given before any prototypes are even built, massively reducing the number of trial/error cycles of design & manufacture.

I never realized how important metrology is, until I asked my dad who worked in metrology for over 50 years. Every electronic part he’s put together and calibrated has gone on to make so many things such as military equipment, cars, phones, anything you can think of. Metrology and metrologists are so under appreciated and if it were not for me majoring in Chemistry I would’ve definitely gone for Metrology had my college offered it ❤

As a professor of manufacturing teaching metrology I find these video quite useful, there is always uncertainty in any measurement but if it meets design tolerances/specifications that's what matters. No such thing as perfect, great video series.

I am a metrologist for biotech. I calibrate the balances, check the RPM's of the centrifuges and measure different gas pressure and levels etcetera across a lot of different equipment's and environments. I wouldn't call myself a scientist or engineer because I measure these things against set standards by either our QA or industry standards but I am well aware that our nerds wouldn't be able to do their jobs without me getting readings from my equipment that is being routinely calibrated by my superiors in the field of metrology who are at least one step closer to using universal constants instead of measurement readouts on their trusted devices like I do.

When you changed from Ptentry to Featurefinder i could not how you did that could you explain how that was done?

I believe that if you drag your line tool in the material (the dark bit of the image) rather than in the negative space, the feature finder will orient the scan direction from dark to light, so you don't have to change direction.

I understand it's a big "it depends" but I'm curious how much, roughly, a system like this costs. I operate this exact model in the shop I work at.

Is there a good probing strategy for measuring a group of pins(connector) formed in a circular manner were there isn't very much clearance between pins and the path generation brings you really close to the adjoining pins?

As a metrologist I often feel underappreciated and belittled by the engineers who would all be dead in the water without my services. It makes me happy to see some appreciation for the field 😊😊😊
