    It doesn't take long for a gentle paddle to turn into a situation you wish you had brought your gear for. Never be complacent on the water. You will probably not use the gear on 99% of your trips but on that occasion you do need it, you really do need it.

    One day, somebody will film one of these self-rescue videos in the actual sea conditions that are going to make you tip out in the first place. This drill is an order of magnitude harder when the waves and wind are tossing you round like a rag doll and the boat keeps refilling with water. I've found out the hard way that it's best to practice it in those conditions, before you have to do it for real.

    • @adventuresportresources
      @adventuresportresources Před rokem

      Hi Dave, you’re right that representative practice in the chosen environments you paddle in is vital to being able to do it when it really matters. However the point of these videos is not to show when it happens but to allow people to develop the appropriate fundamental technical skills which will allow them to apply it in increasingly more challenging conditions. We would always promote progressive practice in a safe and structured way.

    I kayak in Ohio on lake Erie. I always wondered how the waves function in a tide race in comparison to waves I deal with on lake Erie. Tide race current and rocks and narrow areas create the waves in a tide race were waves on a lake like Erie are usually caused by wind and weather. It's got to be a different experience to kayak in. I would love to try a tide race.

    I've found the re-entry and roll to be the most reliable way for me to get back in my boat (e.g., vs cowboy scramble or paddle float rescue). However, I've found the re-entry method shown here to be considerably more difficult than the following. Face the back of your boat, grab both sides of coaming, and put your head in the upside down kayak. Do a reverse somersault such that your feet go past your seat, and at the end you are facing forwards. Find footpegs and set up for roll...and roll. I know this sounds complicated but in practice it's pretty easy (if you have a roll to begin with). I'm 61 years old and fat and it seems almost effortless.

Saturday is predicted around 7knts wind speed and sunday around 5 knts of wind speed. Saturday is currently showing southerly winds whereas sunday is a mix of westerly and northern winds. I plan to kayak on Saturday :)

I can't remember enjoying another video as much as this for quite a while! And the music really is fine - it doesn't get in the way and I thought it suited the pace and flow of the water. Finally, a video that makes sense. One nuance conditions permitting - partially or fully reattach your sprayskirt before rolling. It's not as difficult as you might think. It saves you a lot of time pumping out your cockpit and keep you more stable. Last thing - no "rescue" can substitute for a reliable roll. No swim is better than any swim.

  • @woofna1948
    @woofna1948 Před 2 lety

    Very smooth rough water reentry. I think the crux move in conditions is reattaching the skirt.

  • @coppershark1973

    I’ve never been able to roll. I’ve tried and tried but once upside down I cannot hip snap the kayak a single millimetre. You all make it look so easy.

    • @Lea99Jones
      @Lea99Jones Před 2 lety

      Odds are you are pulling your head UP and pulling down on the paddle. Practice snapping your hips left to right over and over WHILE UPRIGHT. When lifting your right knee, throw your head onto your right shoulder and that boat'll snap like mad. You might flip to the left!!! In whitewater, I've stopped a flip (when my paddle is already way under water) by throwing my head TOWARD the water and nothing else. The "throwing the head" thing means you're trying to put your EAR on your shoulder. These sea kayak sweep rolls all involve either leaning fwd or backward during the sweep. If you're rolling on your right side, when you snap your hips throw your head to the RIGHT (toward the water if you've surfaced). It's totally counterintuitive, but your head should be the LAST thing to come up. And it's laying on your, in this case, right shoulder as you come up. Bringing your head up first kills the roll instantly. I hope this helps.

    Very fun to play in when planned but quite impressive when you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a tide race during a trip in a unknown area. Avoidance may be the best strategy, I guess.

  • @JonasAlexanderson
    @JonasAlexanderson Před 2 lety

    That is not hard to do when you are paddling one of the best, and easiest to turn, kayaks in the world. In my opinion it’s the best kayak you can buy. It might be very frustrating for people watching this and not being able to do the same and not realise that their round hulled kayak can’t turn in the same way.
