The death whistle
Technically the nato round is higher velocity, is a higher pressure round and most all of its projectiles are better BC then the soviet 12.7x108. So just because something sounds bigger or has bigger numbers doesn't necessarily mean it's better. The 50BMG is better in combat due to reliability of the MG itself and the availability of fancy AP/Slap/APIT and other projectiles.

@@cladglas no, i don't think you do. i identified that the original commenter believes that due to the speed of sound, if an artillery shell is going towards you, it will reach you before the sound of it's whistle does. This is not true for the vast majority of ordnance. Mortars, for example, the most common piece, assigned at a company level, travel significantly slower than the speed of sound at all phases of its trajectory. Other artillery shells do as well. There's a reason you "listen" for the whistle and THEN dive for cover. It's not too late.
