What Evolution Reveals About Human Behavior
Let's explore the insights that evolution offers about human behavior. Drawing on the wisdom of evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky, cognitive neuroscientist David Marr, linguist Noam Chomsky and others, this episode asks fundamental questions about our bodies and emotions, their design and purpose.

8:30 "it's kind of rare to find animals that are not related, cooperating." I'm not sure about other animals, but I know that bats cooperate with their "friends" (or what can be called their "roommates"). Search CZcams with the terms "bats" and "reciprocal altruism" for a great video on it.
Music - has to be mating rituals, dance music; it certainly is for mockingbirds and rock stars, an auditory 'peacocking', socially hypnotic transporting rhythms, sense of community, setting poetry language to song makes it memorable for intergenerational cultural transmission. etc :)
Hmm... And yet, "steven pinker" hides-in-plain-sight such revealing words like PEEVE, IRK and, of course, it lexigrams into PEN EVER STINK. No, sir, words (SWORD) are NOT "arbitrary signs", "arbitrary labels" or "conventional social labels."
Thanks for the video. A suggestion: adjust the sound balance so that Steven Pinker's voice is not mostly heard on the right speaker next time.
The Age of Life The ability to carry out actions differentiates inanimate matter from living matter. In turn, every action involves the management of Information. We do not know what Matter is or what Life is, and we assume that all life forms that currently inhabit the planet descend from a common ancestor (LUCA), an organism whose complexity is evident if we consider that it is attributed the ability to reproduce. Due to the above, it is reasonable to assume that “seeds of life” existed prior to LUCA. Assuming that the “seeds of life” emerged together with the Big Bang is a bold postulate, and as such requires a solid empirical foundation. When observing Evolution considering the information that our ancestors have managed, and that currently managed by humanity, it is possible to distinguish seven evolutionary milestones; Its analysis allows us to postulate that Life goes back to the origin of the Universe, and the existence of an “evolutionary pattern” is evident, which turns out to be the Golden Ratio. Evolutionary Milestones -Emergence of ”Seeds of Life”(1) (thirteen thousand eight hundred million years ago). -Emergence of LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor) three thousand eight hundred million years ago -Emergence of the brain (five hundred and fifty million years ago). -Emergence of what was the precursor of human language (2) (twenty-seven million years ago) -Emergence of the language that characterizes us(3) (around two hundred and twenty thousand years ago). -Emergence of “the information age” with the transistor (1950) -Evolutionary Singularity(4) proposed by Ray Kurzweil, who postulates that humanity will access a Singularity as a result of the exponential growth of information management (year 2045). Evolutionary sections Among successive evolutionary milestones we can distinguish the following six “Evolutionary Tranches”, with the duration indicated (in years): Tranche 1: 10,000,000,000 (13,800,000,000 - 3,800,000,000 = 10,000,000,000) Tranche 2: 3,250,000,000 (3,800,000,000 - 550,000,000 = 3,250,000,000) Tranche 3: 523,000,000 (550,000,000 - 27,000,000 = 523,000,000) Tranche 4: 26,780,000 (27,000,000 - 220,000 = 26,780,000) Tranche 5: 219,905 (220,000 - 95(5) = 219,905) Tranche 6: 95 (95 - 0 = 95) The particular variation experienced by the Evolutionary Sections over time suggests using the logarithm of said sections (LT) to analyze their behavior over time. The logarithms in question are as follows: LT1 = 10.0000 LT2 = 9.51188 LT3 = 8.71850 LT4 = 7.42781 LT5 = 5.34224 LT6 = 1.97772 The lines between two successive logarithms have the following slopes (P) P1 = -0.48812 (9.51188 - 10.0000 = -0.48812) P2 = -0.79338 (8.71850 - 9.51188 = -0.79338) P3 = -1.29069 (7.42781 - 8.71850 = -1.29069) P4 = -2.08557 (5.34224 - 7.42781 = -2.08557) P5 = -3.36452 (1.97772 - 5.34224 = -3.36452) After searching for an “evolutionary pattern” we will determine the variation between successive slopes, which is given by the Ratio (R) between them, that is, P2/P1; P3/P2; P4/P3; P5/P4, and is the following: R1 = 1.62538 R2 = 1.62682 R3 = 1.61586 R4 = 1.61324 The above values differ from the Golden Number (1.61803), a number also called the golden number, the number of God, the extreme and average ratio, the golden ratio, the golden mean, the golden ratio and the divine ratio, by 0.45%; 0.54%; 0.13% and 0.30%, respectively. In turn, the average of the sum of the ratios is 1.62032. This value differs from the golden ratio by 0.14%. The results obtained allow us to postulate that Evolution follows a pattern that is a function of Information and the golden ratio, and that Life goes back to the origin of the Universe. Knowing the evolutionary pattern, it is possible to project the duration of an eventual seventh Evolutionary Tranche, which turns out to have a duration of 2.99 hours. The above allows us to postulate that humanity will have to face a Singularity, with an uncertain prognosis. (1)The last universal common ancestor (LUCA) is the putative common ancestral cell from which the three domains of life, Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya, originated. The complexity that LUCA is assumed to have does not give rise to affirming that it arose by “spontaneous generation”, it being valid to postulate the pre-existence of “seeds of life” prior to the emergence of LUCA; It is postulated that the origin of the “seeds of life” dates back to the moment when Matter arose in the Universe, that is, around thirteen thousand eight hundred million years. (2)“We find that the anatomical potential to produce and perceive sounds differentiated by their formants began at the latest by the time of our last common ancestor with Old World monkeys (Cercopithecoidea) about 27 Ma ago”; " Which way to the dawn of speech?: Reanalyzing half a century of debates and data in light of speech” (Science magazine) (3) The last change in the position of the hyoid bone in humans, which would have allowed access to the language that characterizes us, took place approximately two hundred and twenty thousand years ago, and its data is based on archaeological evidence and anthropological studies. There is no scientific source that records this change on an exact date. (4)Due to the exponential growth of information technologies, Ray Kurzweil postulates that a Technological Singularity will occur in the year 2045, at which time technological growth will be so rapid and so profound that it will be impossible to predict what its consequences will be. (5) It is the time between 1950 and 2045, the latter year in which Ray Kurzweil postulates that a Singularity will take place.
As a collectivist, Chomsky's worst nightmare is people believing that (1) there's even much of a thing as human nature, but _especially_ that (2) it came about due to evolution. Collectivists need people to think that humans are born a blank slate, in order for them to accept the inhuman - and _inhumane_ - precepts of collectivism.
Loved your example of texting and driving; I went to town on it. What if children had an innate aversion to walking on flat black surfaces, like paved roads, instead of say, a centipede? That would be great! We would gradually have to train them out of it by age four or five or something. What if the sight of a handgun terrified them like a snake does? Obviously, the fear of clowns is well-placed and is a smart advance move on the part of evolution.
This shows why, just as non-singers should not go onstage and sing, average people should not attempt to think.
Dr. Pinker, thank you. Brad Sillasen said it succinctly elsewhere in these comments. A very good dancer has an advantage in procreation, I am sure of that. (Note the number of religious groups that ban dancing as evidence.) So that's rhythm, balance, timing and coordination. Our ability to compose, sing or play wonderful complex passages is a mystery. I cannot do that but I can remember the contents of 500 code files. I can close my eyes and follow the connections, often going straight to where a bug lives. It seems like an utterly unnecessary latent capability in our early species. Hofstadter linked advanced music to advanced math in Gödel, Escher, Bach. I guess, now that I think of it both of them seem unnecessary until relatively recently.
Wonder if any of the kids on the island felt fear, Steve.
15 seconds of intro animation and music is unnecessary, especially when you have two completely different melodies which are very loud and gratuitous boom sound effect.

You people use science to violate cognition (stealing personal data to find ways to push your hate politics onto people covertly, generating societal conflict for ad revenue), instead of building a better world for humanity, you are just another pampered baby that uses tools to destroy, instead of build. We can't even have social connection with other individuals in the comment section without comments getting hidden. Where is the social value offered by this social media company, you steal personal data, then harassment and hate driven politics is what we get in return for having our data stolen?
Evolutionary psychology shows that humans need social connection (where social media was supposed to be a function of that expression). Of course, the game is set up for you to (look up to influencer, with no external choices). When does social media become a social media?
Exactly, it's all about the motion flow evolution of the system.

Well said.
An eminently sensible proposition as far as composing and playing music is concerned, but as far as I can see it doesn't explain the pleasure of merely listening to it. On that count I'm content to call the pleasure an evolutionary luxury or frill - as, if I understand Pinker correctly, Chomsky (thickheadedly) regards language.🙄
@@dixonpinfold2582 Such attributes grow in concert with appreciation of the attribute. A peacock has a beautiful (and inconvenient) tail because peahens prefer them. If they didn't, peacocks would not have trended large tails. You aren't gonna get music creation abilities absent music appreciation.
At about 5:40 Dr. Pinker says "neither of them would end up with nothing" ...an exceedingly rare, if not first, goof ;-)

I love the scientist Steven Pinker. I do not love the politically far right, "anti-woke" Steven Pinker - and this is where he is lately, sadly. :)
He's centrist/centre-left. Criticizing wokeness doesn't automatically make one far-right. And there's no shortage of people who mock both the far-right and woke left

Stevon why do some Australians say the word "gone" as if it rhymes with "corn"? Even a TV news reporter does this 😮 Her name is M. Aili I think.
This implies that if someone stands up and says: 'I'll fix it', everybody else feels they're off the hook. If that someone is in cahoots with the perpetrator, nobody intervenes. Control the resistence.
Always when there is a problem, it is OK, because someone else will fix it. The "somebody else" attitude to society is a common self defeating anti social mindset that undermines the concept of a harmonious social structure to begin with. I guess we have to ask ourselves; are we an individual perpetually locked in a win lose battle with other individuals, or are we team society working together for a win win for all? [Edit P.S. It is an informed choice with emphasis on the word "choice" :)] > “Every human being is born a barbarian, and only culture redeems them from the bestial.” ― Baltasar Gracián, The Art of Worldly Wisdom > Thank your Mr Pinker for your dedication and the insights you have shared with all of us.
I like that interpretation. Better still I think we can ask ourselves what is the minimal required of me. If you see something and you can make even a fleeting appraisal of what is needed, that minimum will be greater than zero. Unless you are all thumbs in which case it is best you call for help, that is if you can operate a phone.
@@tickypaper6835 Yeah, I used to put it into physical (Most noticeable) in my workplace. I have a minimum set of tasks that I need to do to satisfy my requirements. I would call that 100%, but I always aimed for 110% or even 120%. The extra 10 to 20% usually went to someone else as good-will and most often didn't require any significant addition effort on my behalf. For example I would be in the middle of my own task and walking past a colleague and notice that they would need a tool in there next step in what they were doing. I could see the tool along my path, so I would pick it up and put it next to them as I was passing by so they didn't have to get up to look for it. It makes their day a little easier to achieve that 100% and allows them a little time to reciprocate with the good will. In a team that works that way everyone achieves far better than the 100% with minimal extra effort, and at a minimum everyone achieves the 100% with less effort. That's a kind of "team society" analogy. It's just a personal choice to be a team player and extend a little good will to others. Reciprocation rarely comes directly from the person that you extended the good will to, and typical comes back around from some other member of the team :)
Unfortunately the "Expectation of charity from others" breaks this entire sense of a blindly charitable person. Regardless of what generosity you give out without expectation of return, you are condemned as being selfish and uncharitable and burned on a stake because the charity is not known as a common knowledge. Another aspect it those that give charity to others under the pretense that it is just generosity and expects no repayment, but the payment is still demanded some time latter. The flip side of the last statement is that current social norms expect that a gift be paid for, so we become very weary of "goodwill or generosity' as it becomes later asserted as a deed of ownership from the gift giver. > Genuine good will may appreciate returned gifts but "never expects" a return gift. Anything else is a purchase agreement that should be well defined at the onset.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.🎵
A Malcolm Gladwell interview with the , to date , only female PM of Australia suggests a corollary: a national ' been there , done that , back to normal ' occurrence. A very revealing and , frankly , appalling account.

so, taxes comply to the wisdom of giving? Make Taxpayers happy.
I think giving may reach a different level when an anonymous gift requires significant sacrifice by the giver relative to the pains of the gifted; e.g., I can only afford two sacks of rice, but I give one anonymously to charity.
Fascinating explanation. For me the questions remains what randomness is on a deeper level, fundamentally...
What a simple world this describes. In reality, beyond direct, personal contact, charity almost always involves a decision about how many organizational intermediaries to feed. What fraction of your dollar will reach the needy? What humiliating condition(s) must the needy meet to collect some part of your charity (try hanging out in a refugee camp ... )? And when it comes to governments, what fraction of 'foreign aid' is deployed for its advertised purpose? On a broader scale yet, public expectations of 'moral behaviour' are much more transactional in some cultures than in others.
That makes me think of Mr baseball, Bob Uecker. In one of his Miller lite commercials the usher tells him he in the wrong seat and he responds, "I must be in the front row." What that makes me think of is how people are treated at church. The more tenth they give means what row they sit in. The front row is meant to be seen and recognized and priority attention by the bishop or cardinal. They don't go to the poorest person house for dinner. They dine with the nobles. It was like when i was reading the comments of St. Stephen's church in Nashville, TN. This guy needed to talk with the priest and the priest acted like he didn't have time. That's because the guy didn't give a large enough tenth if he gave at all. Ancient Isreal had this problem so they came up with a chest for the people to drop in what was required by law. That way the money could be used for its intended purpose and the donations were anonymous. Then Jesus shows how it's not the amount that one gives, but what motivates the giving. This is one reason Christians aren't required to give a tenth or tithe. That and Christians don't have a paid clergy as was the levitical priesthood. The levites didn't get a land inheritance, so the rest of Israel took care of them. 2 chronicles 24:8-18; Mark 12:41. Peace and Ahev
Interesting points. Btw, I loved that commercial :)
If you have ever heard the saying, "pay to play." That's where it stems from. Today, people are now talking about white privilege. What it really is is Christianity privilege. Those who tithe more have more privilege. Plus, it doesn't matter how you make your money, illegal or legal, as long as you pay your tithe, you're good to go. Patronato Real. Peace and Ahev
Maybe Sally thinks Harry means sex when he asks her over to watch Netflix, but in actuality, Harry really means watch Netflix because there's a show he really doesn't want to miss. Maybe it was a topic of conversation, and sally said she had never seen the show. Common knowledge seems like a lot of assumptions. If i ask a female if she'd like to get a cup of coffee or a bite to eat, and she assumes im asking her on a date, she assumed wrong. I like coffee and i like to talk, but i don't date. Common knowledge seems to require a direct interchange of information. Maybe that's just me. Peace and Ahev
