Getting Love Right | Scripture: Luke 10:25-42 | Speaker: Pastor Philip Miller
Getting Love Right | Scripture: Luke 10:25-42 | Speaker: Pastor Philip Miller
One of the hallmarks of Jesus’ ministry is His use of parables, short and powerful stories jam-packed with spiritual insights and timeless lessons. 2,000 years later, we’re still unpacking these brilliant tales. Today we get the privilege of diving into one of the most famous of all Jesus’ parables: The Good Samaritan.
Like many of Jesus’ stories... this Parable of the Good Samaritan is given in a very specific setting. Jesus isn’t telling a random story; it’s a story with intent. Jesus is speaking into real life with these parables.
In the case of The Good Samaritan, this story is purposefully sandwiched between two events: A Lawyer’s Question and Two Sisters at Odds. The Good Samaritan is the link that connects everything.
The Lawyer
An expert in the Old Testament Law has come to test Jesus. He asks Jesus, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” The answer is to love God and love your neighbor.
- Keep Love Before You
o God desires, deserves, and demands our loving allegiance-heart, soul, body, and mind.
o Our love for our neighbor should be radical, boundless, holistic and demanding.
The Neighbor
In response to the lawyer’s question, Jesus tells a story to illustrate exactly who a neighbor is.
What kind of love does God require? To do what that Good Samaritan did. When he found a person in need, a person who could have been anyone, of any nationality, any race, any socio-economic background, any political class, any moral condition, he poured himself out in self-sacrificing compassion, care, and self-giving love.
Be a loving neighbor of all. Don’t do what the Priest and Levite did. They divorced their Love of God from their Love of Neighbor. They made it their careers to be all about the Love of God, but when they met a man in desperate need, they failed to love their neighbor as themselves. And in doing so, they failed to Love God as well, for it is He who made that man in His own image. Jesus is teaching us to:
- Keep Love Together
o We cannot separate these commandments:
 To Love our God
 Love our Neighbor
o We cannot delude ourselves into thinking we love our God while we neglect the love of our neighbor.
Here’s the real litmus test of my love for God: How am being a loving neighbor to those around me? Not just the people in my tribe, my group, my family, or my allies. But how am I loving those people?
The Love of God and the Love of Neighbor always go together. They are inseparable because they are one: the Vertical and the Horizonal, it is a cross-shaped love. For upon the cross we behold the Love of God and the Love of Neighbor united in perfect fullness and harmony, and that is our pattern.
The Sisters
The scene shifts to the house of Mary and Martha, where Martha is hustling and bustling about, taking care of everyone, pulling together a huge meal, and making sure everyone’s glasses are filled. Meanwhile, her sister Mary is sitting at Jesus’ feet, drinking in His every word. Martha gets annoyed at Mary who is doing nothing when Martha’s so obviously frazzled.
Do you see why this story comes on the heels of the previous accounts? Remember, all of this began with a question about what God requires of us in the Law of Love? He requires us to Love our God and Love our Neighbor. If the Priest and the Levite show us what it looks like when we try to Love God while failing to Love our Neighbor, Martha shows us what it looks like when we try to Love our Neighbor and end up failing to Love our God.
Martha was so distracted with serving others, even doing things on behalf of Jesus, that she forgot to cultivate Love for Jesus. On the other hand, Mary chose the good portion. Mary chose Jesus. Mary put the Love of God first.
- Keep Love in Order: We will never love our neighbor sufficiently, unless we love our God supremely.
o We love, because He first loved us.
o His love is bestowed upon us freely by grace.
o His love then summons our love in response.
o His love then compels our love for others.
o His love supplies and sustains our love for others
Takeaway: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

That you will not work to please your congregation, trying to tickle our ears and what you think we want to hear. Or what you think is right. It is what God says. True Christian believers know. Do not cater to the non- believers. Cater to your sheep. You speak the truth and your congregation will grow. Please stop the generic sermons. It’s time for you to speak truth and pastor your sheep! • @ministeronaldstimphil5448

Rehashing the different analogies that are used to describe the Trinity so that they can be dismantled, is not going to make the doctrine more understandable or palatable. It is IMPOSSIBLE to make the doctrine acceptable to Christian believers, simply because it does not originate from God. Anyone who knows the voice of God will NOT answer to the Trinity, for if God wanted to present Himself as a Trinity, it would NOT be up to human theologians to determine so. He would have done it Himself. Preachers keep pushing those strawman arguments digging in the Bible to find verses that corroborate their trinitarian theology, but this is to no avail. God is not honored nonetheless. It is not good hermeneutical practice to find verses to support a doctrine. Good and acceptable hermeneutical practice is to let the text speak to us rather than we speak to it. The doctrine of the Trinity is one in which some intelligent humans formulate a concept of God which they are compelling God to accept. However, Deuteronomy 4:2 and Revelation 22:18 prohibit adding to God's words in the Bible. The Trinity is a very dangerous doctrine in that it seeks to wedge one more word where God says we cannot, and it describes a concept that is completely foreign to God. Why has no one in the New or the Old Testament ever mentioned it? Were they less erudite than we are today? Were they less erudite than we are today? Can you imagine our arrogance trying to shove down God's throat a word that is absolutely extraneous to the Bible? The doctrine of the Trinity has NO spiritual value. Period.

I enjoy listening to you and I listened to and I listened and I cried let the part I heard you say when someone says they're in a better place that's a lie. The better place for him is when he was here with me and his children it was my son my only son and I don't like it when people say they're in a better place because that sounds stupid to me why would they even say something like that. My son was in a better place when he was here with me and his three children but now he's gone can my heart is broken and I don't know how to put it back together it's been 6 years and I still can't do anything that I used to love to do. I can't do anything that we used to do together as a family my daughter's always say Mom do you want to go with us to the beach or to the park whatever do you want to go barbecue the answer is no I don't. And the reason why I don't do anything anymore is because me and my children did everything together all the time just about every other weekend we were doing something fun but when I lost my son that broke my heart I don't want to do anything anymore I don't have no desire to do anything anymore without him I miss him so much sometime I watch the front door to see if he's going to come and not can say Mom open the door. All I want to do is hear his voice again I can't even dream of him if I just had one good dream just to know my baby is all right I'll be all right at least I think I will my brother tells me it's not for me to understand why he's gone but I really do need to understand did I do something wrong for the person that took my son from me did I make this person do this to my son maybe one day I understand or maybe one day somebody will tell me but right now I'm still trying to figure it out just saying.

He talks about his conviction before coming to faith. Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit and it is the working of the Spirit that brings people to faith. People who are not being convicted by the Holy Spirit cannot truly come to Christ. As the scriptures say, "No one can call Jesus Lord except by the Holy Spirit". God gives His Spirit to those He knows as His, and He gives them to Christ. That is how we are born again to be the children of God, not of our will, but by God's will. God shows His great power and grace by saving the most wicked of sinners. People who we would determine as completely lost, but the power of the Gospel saves them. Romans 1:16 Thank the Lord for raising up this fine preacher.
