What is Bone Density Screening?
zhlédnutí 346Před měsícem
Bone mineral densitometry (BMD) helps determine your risk of fractures or osteoporosis. This exam uses a low-dose X-ray to measure your bone mineral count, which helps you and your doctor decide if lifestyle changes are needed to slow bone loss. A first (baseline) BMD exam is often taken around age 50 for both men and women, then subsequent exams are recommended every two years. These exams are...

Abdominal MRI scan for stomach nerve problem seeing
Had an MRI done recently and thankfully it was only for 20 min. I have ADHD and claustrophobic so it was very difficult to stay still. I suggest dont open eyes. Wear a cloth face mask
I’m having this test done to me next month, by explaining it in fully, calmly & professionally in detail helps me understand in full & what to expect. The stress test will be less stressful? 😆
How much is it gonna press? Looks painful.
Hi @pamsatira1753, there is a minimum of 4 decanewtons in order for it to be diagnostic, but more compression is better for visualization in order to be able to properly exam.
Is it necessary to done with empty tummy ?
Hi @hayahaya1655, Yes - if there are contents in the stomach - it affects the scan in a few ways. Food increases motility, which increases motion artifact on the scan. Food also could potentially obscure any abnormalities. Finally - if we give an injection of IV contrast, and it causes nausea (which is a possible side effect), a full stomach will likely result in vomiting. I hope this helps with your question.
@@MayfairDiagnosticsOfficial ok thanks...
do you have to take off any jewelry
Hi @JLU-st6sd, in regards to taking off any jewelry, you do not have to take it off - unless it's directly in the field of view of the area being examined.
My mammogram doesn’t hurt, but I know it varies by person. Please do it annually. It caught my breast cancer at stage 2 and was successfully treated with chemo and radiation. Thank god. It was not a lump my doctor or I could feel.
I've been avoiding it, honestly! My primary finally ordered it, and I have yet to make an appt ...I hear so many versions, I don't want to go. Ha!
i have been suffering since 2 year my stomach bloating i did indoscopy but report says nothing there i need help
Hi @bharatlama2729, Mayfair Diagnostics is a medical imaging provider, not a medical clinic so we can not provide medical advice. To investigate any symptoms or concerns, you will need to see a medical doctor who may then request medical imaging. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Have a good day.
This lady was wearing the vest so that means we can wear the vest.
Little, if anything, is said about radiation exposure from a CT scan and what exactly is in the contrast dye solution? How long will that dye substance remain in a person’s system? As I understand it, CTs use ionizing radiation, which is not good for a person’s DNA. Lots of radiation exposure?
Hi @sarahmccoy1941, radiation dose is strictly dependent on the patient's body habitus, and the exam we're performing. If a person was having a CT chest, abdomen and pelvis, an average person would expect to receive approx 3-4 mSv which is quite close to the amount of radiation someone living in Calgary at our altitude receives every year. Lower elevation - less radiation. Higher elevation - more radiation. The CT dye is an iodine based solution which shows up as white on the scan - enhancing the arteries/veins/ organs. Radiation is NOT good for anyone - however, it's our understanding that in one's lifetime, the risk of getting cancer is approx 20%. After a CT scan (eg. chest, abdomen, pelvis) the risk of getting cancer would now be approx 20.1%. Depending on what the referring doctor is looking for (eg cancer) the risks from radiation far outweigh the risk of missing disease. We also have dose reduction software that we use for all of our scans. Some exams (virtual colon) allow us to use a higher dose reduction than other exams where we may need higher detail. Ultimately - if there is any concern about radiation - please speak to your doctor and perhaps there's another Diagnostic Imaging exam type you can have done instead. Hope this helps! Have a wonderful day.
The video is great, thank you!
I’m getting a CT scan tomorrow morning (my first ever) to check on a strange feeling in my upper chest… this video helped me have an idea of what to expect. Thank you… and fingers crossed for positive results! 🤞🏻🙏🏻
Feet first I'm good to go. Head first will be a problem 😂😂

Yesss😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I'm screaming cause baby i had one in the dark im claustrophobic woooo weee they had to give me medicine
Here in Toronto, they have put it into a two-hour rest and two-hour stress cycle. So much better than a two-day cycle.
Ok drizzy
What will happen if you swallow during CT SCAN contrast?
Hi @kimatencio6935, nothing will happen - unless of course we're specifically scanning the throat and esophagus - in which case there will be motion on the scan. I hope this helps with your question. Please let me know if you have any more. Have a good day!

Wondering if you can take a anti-anxiety medication before it
Hi @julierosenberg491, yes, you are more than welcome to take any anti-anxiety medication - just can't be sleeping during the scan as some of the sequences will require breath holds - so you need to be alert. Have a wonderful day!
I had one done last week, And I’m being called back another one. Should I be worried?
Hi @Helga-iv4uf, it can be quiet common after an ABUS to be called back. Just a closer dedicated look.
This was very helpful. Now I know what to expect!
I did this 3 x ,every 5 years when I was in Doha,Qatar
thanks for this video very informative, will be having my ultrasound tomorrow
هل ممكن اجراء الفحص وانا ارتدي ملابسي ؟
Hi @zainab313__ , Just to answer your question. Top is off for a mammogram. Sometimes, you can keep a gown on one side while performing the mammogram on the other, however, the gown can get in the way and create artifact so the tech usually prefers the top completely exposed. The exam itself takes about 7 min. Thank you and have a nice day! Mayfair Diagnostics
You will have a female nurse. They have seen topless women every day. Don’t feel embarrassed as it can save your life ❤
My question is how is that photo take in the thumbnail
Im nervous about getting my first mamagamm
Excellent - what do I do if I can't be still 45 minutes on my back! No way, ughhhh
Got my first one on Tuesday 🙈 don't like the idea of having to strip 🙈 i thought they did it over clothes
They do not do it over clothes. Think about it. They do not do X rays over/through clothing
Good to know bc mine is coming up soon too but how come I was told to fast 10 hrs before it instead of 6hrs as mentioned in your helpful video?! Thx btw
Depends who's doing it some are better that others
Where are you located at?
Hi @kevinhenderson9020, please find our available locations listed here: www.radiology.ca/locations/ Let me know if you need any more assistance. Have a wonderful day!
The last one I had I saw stars and actually thought I was going to pass out. It was painful! Then every time I am then put through a sonogram. Even the thought of another momo makes me break out in sweat and terror. Plus X-rays are a carcinogen. So if one starts at 40 by the time they are 80 they have had 40 times X-rays through that tender area.
Take ibuprofen an hour before
I feel puffing in the next day while walking after the chest ct, is it normal... Pls help
Why not stress first? If the stress is normal you don't need the resting study and can lessen the patient's radiation burden.
Thank you
I have canceled my first one in January and now I have another one in February. I have a known allergy to contrast dye and I am tired of people telling me there can be no reaction. Can someone please tell me what precautions are taking if something should go wrong? And what is the amount that is put in? I am so stressed out about this test but if I don’t do it what are my options? Finding two bone lesions on a CT scan on my pelvis and I don’t know any other alternative. Can someone please help me?
Hi @GigiQ597, a bone scan does NOT use contrast dye, so please feel a bit of relief with that concern. The injection that we administer is a radiopharmaceutical. It has 2 components. The component that allows us to take our images is an element on the periodic table called technetium. We use an isotope of technetium that is radioactive, specifically technetium 99m. It is suspended in saline to form an ionic compound called pertechnetate (99mTcO4-) and then mixed/tagged to the second component. The second, non-radioactive component of the injection is called Medronate, or MDP (methylene diphosphonate). This is a phosphate based compound. Phosphates are one of the building blocks of bones, this is what will bring the radioactive component to the bones so that we can assess how they are building/remodeling. The full ingredients for an MDP vial are: medronic acid, stannous chloride dihydrate, p-amniobenzoic acid, and a small amount of either sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid for pH balance. When the components are mixed, even more saline is added, which makes up the majority of the volume injected. This injected volume is based on the concentration of the radioactive element and not the MDP. Each dose is an average volume of 0.2 mL, with a range of 0.05-0.5 mL, depending on the dilution. The amount of radiation used is 740 MBq (megabequerels). This is a measurement of how many gamma photons are released per second. This amount will decay over time, having a half life of 6 hours. This means after 6 hours there is only 370 MBq remaining, after 12 hours there is 185 MBq remaining, and so on. MDP mainly leaves the body through the kidneys/urine. With increased hydration throughout the day the tracer will leave the body even more quickly. Side effects from this injection are extremely rare. So rare in fact that we refer to it as having "no side effects". Occasionally, someone may have a sensitivity to one of the components of the MDP vial. This sensitivity can cause someone to feel mildly unwell or slightly nauseated. Usually these effects are gone by the following morning. I would estimate we have 5-10 patients per year report these effects, out of the >10,000 bone scan patients we see each year. We have never had a patient report an allergic reaction to their bone scan injection. Our Mayfair Place location has a "crash cart" located in the nuclear medicine department. This is because we perform higher-risk cardiac examinations at this location. This cart is stocked with an epi-pen if it should be needed in an emergency. All of our technologists and our administrative assistants are certified in CPR for healthcare professionals and have years of experience and first aid training. There are also radiologists on site. The bone scan itself is often an easy and relaxing procedure. The injection is done into a vein using a very small needle, and it usually takes less than a minute. Sometimes pictures are done immediately following the injection to see where it goes in the bloodstream. It then takes time for the tracer to make its way into the bones, which is why this exam has 2 parts. The wait time between appointments can be between 2-5 hours, depending on which time slot you are booked. If you prefer a shorter or longer delay you can ask your booking agent which time slots will accommodate this. For the delayed images they generally take around 30-45 minutes in total. Either whole body images will be done, or partial body images. We often perform a SPECT/CT image, but not always. This is a 3D image of the bones combined with a low-dose CT scan. There is NO CT contrast used for this portion. It is essentially a 3D x-ray that will make our bone scan images clearer. The radiation from this is very low. Please let us know if you would like someone to contact you to discuss any further concerns. Thank you and have a nice day. Mayfair Diagnostics
@@MayfairDiagnosticsOfficialThank you very much for taking the time to answer and explain everything to me. I do appreciate it. Can you also tell me due to my low kidney function and waiting also to see a heart specialist can this injection have any bad effect on my kidneys or heart? Thank you.
@@MayfairDiagnosticsOfficialThank you for explaining everything and being so kind. I would like to talk to someone if possible? Do you have a number?
Thanks for the explanation. I'm in hospital & need bone scan for an injury.
I'm also going to have an MRI on January 31st. I hope I'm not afraid. I'm especially afraid of noises and then I tend to make sudden movements
Got one done on the 16 of current month and tomorrow another one focusing on abdomen area! I’m so worry that willing to change my diet if necessary what I mean by that is staying away from alcohol. Good luck to yourself!
What is the risk of throwing up? I have a phobia and I’m worried the contrast will make me sick
Hi @ljtravels3861, with a routine lung scan, with IV, we have never seen it happen if that helps ease your concerns. There is a 'warm feeling' described by patients when they receive it, but no one has thrown up. Hope this helps!
Did she have to go in fasting and have 6 cups of water an hour before? My office is requesting it and I'm currently going through female incontinence at age 41 especially when I'm on my menstrual cycle I really can't hold my urine and the receptionness at her job is really something.. she's horrible and doesn't care. Do I really need that much water? I don't understand
Hi @marleanamarlianamont5939, thank you for your question. In order for the sonographers to obtain the best possible images, patients do need to fast and have a fully distended bladder. We understand that this isn't always possible and our technologists will work with you to find solutions to these obstacles. One option is to come to your appointment early and drink the 1 litre of water in the clinic. That way as soon as your bladder fills and you feel that you can no longer wait, you can alert the front desk and we can try to obtain the required images expeditiously to preserve your comfort. Please email us a patientservices@radiology.ca if you have further questions. Thank you.
Its too.. good for curious person❤❤❤
Horrible thing to have. Hot and claustrophobic.
I have my first mammogram tomorrow I’m nervous
I hope it went well, mine is tomorrow 😢
What happens if you are diabetic and on plavix ? Is that a blood thinner?
Hi @katherinegosnell8256, thank you for your question. Diabetic patients or those on medications can have CT scans, even if we require the use of IV contrast. If this doesn't answer your question, please email us at patientservices@radiology.ca and we can speak about this in more detail.
I just got my first cat scan today and it took about 10 minutes for everything.

I am super claustrophobic. i am having a cat scan of my thymus gland in my chest area. I need to know if the images would show my lungs clearly as well if it's a non contrast cat scan. i have had a nodule in my lung for 10 years. so it's something that would be eventually ordered. i would like to use the same images for 2 different doctors( one that wants to see my thymus gland and other other that wants to see my lungs) that way i don't have to sit through another ct scan.
Hi @readingchapterbooks881, thank you for your question. Lungs can be seen without IV contrast, as can the nodule. However, without IV contrast, all anatomy will have a generalized shade of grey and may hide abnormalities. If the nodule is greater than 1cm, it’s recommended that we use IV contrast to see if the nodule enhances (has blood supply). Without contrast, larger nodules can appear benign, but may not be. The thymus gland is also something that would benefit from contrast. I hope this helps. You can email us at patientservices@radiology.ca if you have further questions. Thank you.
