That’s an OLD hive. The darker the honeycomb - the older the hive. The bees reuse the honeycomb like a canning jar. Cells used over and over again eventually turn darker over the years.

I feel like I would be completely thrilled to find that a colony of bees built such an awesome and massive hive on my property, that I wouldn’t even have it removed. I would like to think that I would just let them have whatever location they chose to build their hive.
