Cool puzzle, very entertaining solve. My favourite fish saying is "Act of Cod", often used by Colin Mochrie in "Whose Line".
Side note: The "Backstreet Boys" clip from Whose Line is one of my favourite pieces of comedy EVER.
@@QuizzyDan Was that the "our next band is the sound of a bird" from the audio telemarketers bit? Bless CZcams for having archived so much content from the Drew Carey era
@@darkshoxx The very one, yep!
In 1D, LOCAL equals NEIGHBORHOOD because they're both to be read as adjectives: a local store, e.g.
"calyx" is pronounced "KAY-lix." You'd never guess it from the spelling.
So it is - I had no idea (obviously). The SOED does give kal-lix as an alternative pronunciation so I'm absolutely going to pretend I knew that and will run away quickly...
I feel like most of the clues here are Monday-Tuesday level difficulty, and then you get slapped in the face with COETZEE which is like a Saturday difficulty with the definition, but especially the wordplay.
Agreed - partly a result of the gridfill here probably. It does happen semi regularly that there's clue they've had to use which feels a bit out of place difficulty wise, maybe as a last resort.
Watching this, and hearing you talk to me was surprising, and then I rememberd I was watching the stream lol. Please upload them faster :)
fun fact about the ecstatic: all of the mid height panels in there used to be top height, it got nerfed because a lot of people were having trouble with them. Also, at this point you have nearly enough knowledge to switch over to level 2 if you dont want to grind full completion on level 1 If you want, a hint for making better understanding of the rules (under read more in case you dont want that kind of hint) Ignoring heights, what do you think yellow means, in a single word? What do all of the heights have in common? What about purple? What about all the top panels? Getting all of these broad rules in your notes might help you figure out new rules easier.
These streams are actually a bit old as I played it a while back... but pleasingly I've pretty much forgotten everything so these questions are valid again :D I do mean to ask - are there any mods or user made areas that would make an excellent self-contained and not ridiculously tricky section to have a play at, in the future?
@@QuizzyDan tried replying earlier but i think my message got removed. The lingo discord has a wide variety of custom maps, but my personal recommendations would be Nerds Omly, for a couple of common custom colors, and Liduongo, i think its the best map out there
@@lnterest-ing Ooh, someone else had also mentioned Liduongo. Maaaay just have to tackle that in the future, along with Nerds Omly. Thanks for the tips (and curse you in advance etc etc)
I think 5D should be "One who plants TREE in the Sound." Sigh.
Typo! Should have been Obscurantist's Subtractions. (One who obscures things.)
Ta! Updated. Silly long word.
I've been following your channel for several weeks, but never expected to see you solving one of my puzzles! I guess this must have come from the Enigma/National Puzzlers League collection? It was so long ago that I forgot what the gimmick was. Glad you enjoyed it. Wish it had been even more brilliant. (If you can find it, I did one for Games Magazine called But Is It Art? and one for The Enigma called Message in a Battle, and I'm very proud of both of those.)
And fair point on the word "exchange." No one caught that in the editing process. Ditto for the missing "2 wd." note that should have been on 20D. SPOILERS I GUESS: "Wolves" was intended to clue "players" in the hip-hop sense of ladykillers and smooth talkers.
@@greetingcardboy Minor quibbles in the grand scheme of thingsm for sure!
David! It is is wonderful to get a message from you - I got this puzzle from Cryptic All-Stars by Roger Wolff, Vol 1 (possibly Vol 2, it's close to the time when I finished one and started another book) - and this is far from the only puzzle I've done of yours! Must have done four or five, I reckon? This puzzle had a lovely pay off, and I'm always in awe of people who a) have the ideas to make these and then b) can figure out a way to do it.
I'm glad you're enjoying watching them! These are from a couple of years ago (so there's lots still to put up on this channel), I do love a good variety cryptic (assuming it's not Listener difficulty...). Also, love that you'd forgotten the gimmick, I do that too with my work...!
@@QuizzyDan My goodness! I'm just egotistical enough to start searching now...
i know that this stream is well over already, but one tip for the top blocks that I made good use of is to just close your eyes once you know the prompt, so you dont get mixed up by how the word is spelled
An excellent tip, actually. Another good tip is not being a muppet but I can't help at that one, oh well. It is quite the rabbit hole, this game...
always nice to see more people playing Lingo :) You seem to have gotten pretty far for two hours in!
Welcome to lingo! hope you have a great time, the rabbit hole goes deep
IT IS BONKERS!
ice height battle advanced I don't remember when was this from so it will be interesting to see he will encounter the "new" content
What a final reveal! Great feat of puzzle construction
I'm always in awe of how setters manage to construct these puzzles - sometimes they're absolutely bonkers!
WOF is 100% a legitimate means of solving... Anyone who believes otherwise is entitled to be wrong
Heck yes! Otherwise why bother arranging the words in a grid?! You'd just have a list of clues, like in an exam. Booooring.
This is an ART ATTACK!
I did love that show!
Found the give and take far too difficult!
It hurts to get your head around, doesn't it!!
@@QuizzyDan you managed very well! Love these videos.
@@maxstunner100 Thank you so much!
Hello, did you do other investigation games? Because I think boxes are empty against other companies like detective box by example. What do you feel about that? Therefore I think it's expensive
The Detective Society boxes have been my favourite boxes to do because of the good puzzles and well written / humorous content / whimsical world (especially in Season 4). I do with occasionally there was more in each box, and it is relatively pricey, but I take the view that I'm paying for all the online work as well so I'm with it.
Love it!
That beginning ;o)
So easily done. Just a momentary bit of confusion (then followed by three more hours of momentary bits of confusion)...
Yep, that's a Pokémon.
🤣
Here from Lateral, very much enjoy hearing you on the podcast! It’s very fun watching you puzzle these out as I try to as well!
Hellooooo! Understand is a great game in this genre - some of the later connections.... hooooooooooooooooooo boy. Good luck, hope you battle through it successfully :)
41:08 Well. The struggle is real ;o)
Technology is fun.
As I'm making my way through your back catalogue, are the puzzle boats also available somewhere? They sadly clash with my weekly quiznight -.-
I'm not currently planning on putting the Puzzle Boats online - I don't want to "publish" all of Foggy's wonderful puzzles - but I might in the future. Sorry I can't give a better answer!
@@QuizzyDan No problems, I fully understand that. Maybe my trivia team and I will get the boats. We had fun with this years RSS Christmas hunt (and even made it into the top teams), so there is some motivation! Thank you for your videos!
@@skasperl Always worth occasionally supporting Foggy! Good luck if you do tackle a PB (or a smaller P&A magazine if you want something more manageable) - and you're very welcome for the videos! Thank *you* for watching.
Laughed a bit too hard at 18:53
I have a friend who loves trivia and pub quizzes and I asked them this and they went "Yes, it's Jun-" and then promptly buried their face in their hands.
Cryptic instructions, and a crossword. 😂
Howdy Daniel! Do you know if this puzzle is available online somewhere? I'd love to give it a crack.
Howdy doodlily! This puzzle is indeed online - it can be found along with all the Hex puzzles here: coxrathvon.com/ Scroll down to Atlantic Puzzle #250 and there it is - when I came to creating the excel files for this puzzle, as used on my stream, I had links to something from The Atlantic website I think and I could copy/paste text from that, but sadly all there is available online now is the PDF. I hope that's better than nothing!
@@QuizzyDan Perfect, thanks, I'll figure something out :)
I loved your detective society vids, I hope that you can make more with diffrent ones :D (not from uk)
I will definitely be doing Season 4, Murder on the Moon, when it comes out later this year. I've not found any other puzzle boxes like this that are as good!
@@QuizzyDan oh :( (There are some family ones, but they may bore you)
oh wow i didn't know you had the rights to stream footage the PGA tournaments
🤣 - an exclusive deal, right there
I hope you have not become as addicted to watching other people's Obra Dinn playthroughs as I have. This has been enjoyable.
Thank you very much! This was livestreamed in 2022 and STILL my head hurts from it. Such a great game :D (Thankfully, I'm not addicted to others playing it but I do enjoy sneaking a peek at occasional solves of it!)
"severe wood poisoning" :) (Fun fact, you can actually get poisoned by some kinds of wood, such as yew - a wooden object is usually safe to handle, but don't make a drinking cup out of it.)
Now that's a fun fact! Didn't know that.
Ah, the amazing dopamine hit of the "3 More Fates correct" sting.
YES YES YES YES YES
Thanks!
You're welcome! Absolutely no idea what happened with the previous vid. Enjoy the grisly deaths :)
Where is the season 2 video?
I'll be uploading them over the next couple of months! The first one is ready right now, actually! Tada: czcams.com/video/8p5ui6q1IZQ/video.html
you were supposed to contact claire on her mobile number that would have asked for a code word
Apparently so - and I believe the Detective Society have now closed this loophole.
Yes! Thank you
I’ve only just discovered your Twitch channel but I’m loving the streams I’ve seen so far. Are old episodes of Dan’s Quiz still available to watch? if so where can I find them as I’d to watch them all!
Hello there! Old episodes of Dan's Quiz aren't online, but I will be putting up old episodes of The Detective Society over the next few weeks. I hope that's a reasonable consolation prize!
Good job!!
I got very lucky with the placement of the puzzles in the "one of these three is solvable" puzzles, and also the physical route puzzle. YAY!
Nice clips. I see you were in the second pair with Gary. Well, just out of interest, do you know who the contestants in the first pair were, by any chance? Oh, and do you have the full episode unedited as well and is there any chance you could upload it? Thanks either way.
I don't think I do have the episode now, it's lost to the annals of time. Bizarrely, I sort of know Tim. His sister is Sally who was at Reading Uni at the same time as me, who is an acquaintance! Tim and Sally are also on the current series (S16) of Only Connect, which I worked on, and I got to have a chat with them one lunchtime which was a lovely catch up.
This is the crossword I was doing when I asked you about the parsing of VERVE a few weeks back I don't think I completed it and tbh I doubt I would've been able to on my own
Have you got the countdown grand final episode from season 54 please
I'm not certain - I think so, but it'll be at my parent's house which I can't currently get to. Will try to remember to look when I next visit.
Ok thank you
The simplest way to get 286 seems to me to be the following way (and the two large numbers do help): 10 x 7 = 70 100 / 25 = 4 70 x 4 = 280 280 + 6 = 286 An alternative using all the numbers is: 25 x 7 = 175 175 + 100 = 275 10 / 2 = 5 275 + 6 + 5 = 286
In the second letters round of this video, TELECOM would have been recognized as a word back in 2005, I believe. In the numbers round, I think I found two of the easier ways: 50 x 3 = 150 10 x 7 = 70 150 + 70 + 6 = 226 50 x 3 = 150 10 x 6 = 60 150 + 60 + 9 + 7 = 226 And there was a way to multiply directly up to the target: 10 x 6 = 60 60 + 50 + 3 = 113 9 - 7 = 2 113 x 2 = 226
Why is this video scaled so narrow?
Can I be on one of your shows?
I wish! Sadly I'm not doing them any more, but give me cameras and a studio and I'd be back at it!
Don't you have a cell phone?
Aren't you from Britian?
I am, I studied abroad for a year though.
Is this mostly British trivia? I didn't know any of these.
Yep.
How you become a Schlag den-Fan in the uk?
I was introduced to it by a few like minded game show fans in the UK, and instantly loved it. It's epic.
Epic is the right word. Maybe I can make a link you you on my "Schlag den"-Fanpage sdr-deluxe.de.tl?
Yes absolutely - a group of us do an English commentary during each one, czcams.com/channels/f8g34AChp1X6tsEzq7MW8A.html is another channel which has them (it depends which one of us sets up the stream)
Did you make all these games Dan?
+MultiRobotnik Yep! Well, I co-created the show with a friend but we both had the main ideas for the show.
The first question of the body part round about the great white shark had me thinking Moby Dick.
+MultiRobotnik Oh that's good! A great alternative answer that isn't an unreasonable guess. Shame I didn't think of that as a potential answer!
