Kaizo X Invention & Innovation Assembly Video + Why I upgraded from the Fort Edition
In this video, I walk you through my process of replacing my old waterfall spray booth (OPHOR/KAIZO Mobile Fort Water Curtain) with a new one version, Kaizo X Invention & Innovation. This is my first long-form video, so it's a bit long. I will do my next one's pre-scripted to avoid the run-on issues. There was about 3 hours of raw assembly, mostly due to how long it took to remove the plastic wrap on the stainless steel, so it took a lot of editing to get this right. Installing the tape is the hardest part to understand, as there are two tapes. I have several sections explaining this in the chapters below.
Addressing issues with solvent resistance in the previous Mobile Fort unit, I share how I've modified the space with custom airbrush holders and shelves, and how an unexpected decrease in performance prompted my switch to a newer model.
The Kaizo X spray booth is professional-grade with plenty of room for customization - perfect for anyone who enjoys assembling and painting models. I show how to assemble the unit correctly as the instructions are quite terrible and it's an involved process with many steps that aren't immediately clear. I also created a new VOC venting method for spray booths that effectively eliminate VOC's based on my testing. I end the video by demonstrating how to clean up after a paint session using paint remover wipes.
GIVEAWAY: Additionally, I will be giving away 3 spray booths. All of them are used, two are lighly used with one only being used once. 2 are master units, and one is an OPHIR water curtain unit with moderate usage. Please like, share and comment and ill pick a few people to send these out to. I don't charge shipping or require any personal info outside of your address, so anyone asking for that is not legit.

    Great learning. Do you attach the spray booth duct exhaust end to the Canlite with tape ? A d the other end of Can lite will release clean air ? Sorry if my question sounds stupid but I am not familiar with the filter idea. I can’t connect the spray booth to the window with the long winter and freezing temp here. So I am using the bucket method which is not ideal if you spray solvent. Thx !!

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 5 měsíci

      No problem, I'll need to check but I'm 95% sure the exhaust tube uses a standard metal clamp connector and runs into the top of the filter. The filter is a huge cylinder of a cotton like filter material. Inside is 15-20 pounds of powdered carbon filter. The filter is rated to roughly 600cfm, and the air passes through the carbon filter medium through the top intake and out all of the cotton filter material second stage on all the sides of the cylinder. The airflow is unrestricted as the fans are rated around 600cfm and so is the filter, so you maintain negative pressure in the chamber. After the exhaust comes out of the cotton outer layer, according to canlite it's 99.9% filtered of VOCs. I've also done VOC testing and it seems that claim is correct. Canlites are mainly used by at home cannabis growers who are looking to avoid unwanted attention due to the potent scent of there grow tent exhaust. They basically run a grow tent into a canlite and it completely removes scent and vocs. I've also voc tested the bucket method and it does not work, it doesn't remove smells or vocs. It just moves the air to a different place.

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 5 měsíci

      So I just checked, it's a 6 inch exhaust tube secured by a metal clamp with screw tightening harness. If you look at 6:49 timestamp you can see in the top of the canlite, it has a metal aluminum intake where the exhaust is clamped onto. You can see the metal clamp itself at 29:03 with the exhaust hooked up for install reference.

      @@HobbyBenchone last question if my spray booth has less CFM than the one you are showing. I guess I have the Ophir with 200 CFM if I am not wrong. Would it still be ok to run the exhaust through the 6” Can lite 600 CFM? I mean if the Can lite has a higher capacity than the booth fan is there any risk that air will come back to the booth. Again can’t thank you enough for the great info !! I was sure the bucket wouldn’t neutralize any solvent which I avoid using any in winter. Still I prefer a safer method like the filter you are showing and in both cases I always wear a respirator + I have an air purifier in my hobby room

      @HobbyBench Před 5 měsíci

      @@Azantys I'd use the 4 inch canlite model as it's rated for 300-400cfm last I checked and the unit you have uses a 4 inch exhaust anyway. I also use a resp and have a good air filter (which does help). The 4 inch will have slightly less carbon but it should be fine with the lower cfm and it's still like 12 pounds

    Ive been thinking of both models and i cant decide on which one to get... i dont know if the 400.00 price tag is worth it and waiting for it to get back in stock for pre order. • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 7 měsíci

      Also getting the water out on the cheaper one is a nightmare because the plastic water bin is so thin it's impossible to move while filled and it's really awkward to lift off, and the clips break like crazy. O rings are not solvent resistant so the water curtain fell on my rx 78 pg u while I was finishing and ruined it out of no where. At this point I'm really unhappy with the cheap one and would recommend putting the extra funds up to go with the x

    The black package is "adhesive improver", you're supposed to wipe the booth down with those pads and then put the glue/tape to attach the parts to make it semi-permanent. As for the water, I avoided bleach as I spray Tamiya and LAcquers and bleach + alcohol = chloroform neurotoxin gas...:/

      Very good point on the bleach, I never thought of that. What would be an appropriate anti mold agent that doesn't react with lacquers. As for the black package it's just a standard lacquer cleaner, it's meant for cleaning off the stainless steel surfaces after painting

      @@HobbyBench TLDR Really great video, thank you for taking the time to make it! My personal suggestion would be to look at water cooling or aquarium anti fungal additives. The benefit of water cooling is you can find variants that are safe for specific metals (The water pump for instance). Read the small print or write the companies. They should be able to tell you if it will work well. Since you need it to be safe with alcohol, you can't use bleach or vinegar due to the same problem of creating toxic fumes. Regarding the fumes I'd suggest considering to get a molecule measuring meter for voc's. They will totally remove the odor but they don't always remove all of the voc's from resin printing. Size and quality could make a difference for carbon filters but I'd rather know it is working correctly for indoor venting. I'd prefer to ventilate to the exterior for safety.

      It's a really great unit, I've had 2 masters and the cheaper water curtain. I wasn't really 100% happy with them. None of them really sucked in enough air to counter the lacquer smells. (Imo the negative pressure in the kaizo x is key) The cheaper water curtain also had a lot of issues I go over in my latest assembly video with lacquer resistance overall. The innovation/invention fixed all those issues, literally leaves no scent when spraying inside into a carbon canlite and makes my entire airbrushing experience much better. It's my favorite airbrushing accessory for sure, followed by my ophir dryer oven.

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 10 měsíci

      Here is proper can lite for the kaizo innovation x, make sure you do the 6 inch vent as it's not only the proper sized vent but has enough cfm to support fan system - amzn.to/3sWaXKk For the cheaper plastic water curtain model by kaizo or any of the Amazon variations, you would need to use the 4 inch but it would be slightly under cfm rating here - amzn.to/3sWaXKk

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 10 měsíci

      Also you wouldn't want to just attach it right to the fan since it's like 20 pounds, you would want to get a 4-10 feet length - 6 inch exhaust tube. Keep the tube as short as possible and try to prevent curves.

      @@HobbyBench Ah I see - that thing is indeed industrious. I'll probably get that if/when I get into lacquer painting. For Acrylics (primarily ink) and Badger primer, I'd imagine a carbon filter will work fine? Do you see acrylics primarily dissolving in the waterfall?

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 10 měsíci

      @@FallenB1ade Ya you prob won't need it for acrylics. If you have a place to vent outside, just send it right outside without filtering. If you don't, you should be able to get away with venting into a 5 gal bucket with water or using a cheaper grow filter then a can lite. The can lite is good for filtering VOC's, and you usually don't have too much exposure with acrylics if any at all. The waterfall should collect most of it either way.

    Hey! I also have this spray booth, but have not been as successful with the setup. Also, did you every use the red piece of double sided tape?

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před 10 měsíci

      I made a video on install I'll be posting soon, but my camera died in the last few minutes of assembly. I'll re-record that last part verbally to explain how I installed it, but to answer your question, the red tape is used to secure the clear pieces to the top and sides, but you won't have enough to cover the entire run so use the entire run for the overhang plastic and cut two small pieces to do the sides with whatever is left. Anything that isn't covered on the sides, use the foam 2m tape. Keep on mind because the panels are clear, you will need to secure the panels to each other using the red tape otherwise you would have white lines if you used the 2m tape. The red tape is also stronger, so I used the remaining tape to secure the top overhang to the unit. The benefit of the red tape is it sets clear, while the 2m is white foam. In the end, you will likely need to use a combo of both. Make sure to secure your side plates first, you may need to enlarge the holes slightly so it doesn't bulge where the screw hex heads are. Then lay the red tape all the way across the overhang, and use the remaining on the sides then switch to the 2m foam if you run out towards the bottoms. Put all the tape down first, then put the stainless steel removable piece in place. Check your sides don't hit into the stainless steel piece and use that as a guide for the bottom. I actually used some cheap tape to hold all 3 pieces together as one then set it onto the tape all at once.

      @HobbyBench Před 10 měsíci

      I just posted a short on how to vent these type of units. To sum it up, you can go the budget way and vent into a 5 gal bucket full of water. You will need to cut a 4 inch Circular hole and install a port and add vent holes to the 5 gal lid. The better way, is to buy something like a can-lite filter, or any similar virgin activated carbon exhaust filters. They are basically intakes full of activated carbon and that will clean 98% of VOCs and fumes. Amazon has some cheaper types of carbon exhausts, you just want to make sure it has at least a few pounds of carbon. (check weight on Amazon of item) This is the one I got since I now use the upgraded kaizo water curtain which has a 6 inch duct instead of 4 inch, but they have both on this page. amzn.to/45w3vUj You may still need to use the 6 inch because you may need at least 300cfm for either water curtain fan. Also the 6 inch one has 18 pounds of carbon, vs like 4 pounds in the 4 inch one

      Hey, I have a concrete garage so I started out venting into a 5 gal button full of water with a lid and vent holes. I am working on an exhaust system in my garage that goes through the ceiling to outside, but that's still very early. One thing I want to note now I've had the unit for several months, is some of the unit's parts are not solvent resistant. That caused the orings that hold the water curtain to fail, causing it to drop on a bunch of parts I was printing which was a nightmare. The LED bar connector also broke due to solvents breaking the plastic down. The company, OPHIR, has been responsive and sent me replacements at no cost, but I did also buy the Robot Kai Innovation X, although it has not arrived yet. I'll likely give my old one away in a contest. Overall I would still recommend the unit, just keep this in mind to control your lacquer/solvents.

      I plan on making a video shortly, it's made by OPHIR (who also makes the water curtain spray booth) and sold on Amazon. Here is a link, amzn.to/3Yp6GJm It seems to be out of stock for the next 30-60 days, but it works very well overall.

    I want to make the jump to finally doing some Air brushing. Do these booths also got an exhaust to take the fumes out through a window, or is it all done by the waterfall? Thanks!!

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před rokem

      Hey, they have the most powerful fans I've seen in consumer level spray booths. Something like 380cfm with triple fans. The exhaust can be routed outside or into a 5 gal bucket full of water. I've done some voc testing with the 5 gal setup and found no noticeable levels of VOCs being leaked

    • @HobbyBench
      @HobbyBench Před rokem

      Also, the easiest way to start is literally to just do it even if your spraying spoons, it gets much easier from there. I recently restarted myself, a good starting airbrush is the mr creos line

      Sure, I have a newborn so things are slow right now with content and I have a ton of content for my business I've had to shoot over the last 2 weeks. I will try to make some more content this weekend, including a better overview. Barbatos Rex has a good walk through on this system you can review in the meantime, although I have a bit more of a complex setup.

      I made them myself in shapr3d, just finished the V2. If you have a 3d printer I can send you the files, or I can make some for you if you want to buy from my etsy store. Once it's done with testing I'll share a link with you here

  • @Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P

    'Anthony', thanks for the update, and the "longer version" of all your shorts. I was thinking of getting this paint booth, and not the other showing off on 'Barbatos'.....although the flow of air in the "newer" booth is Quite promising!! Saw the link, but my question is ....... I build pretty good size models in 1/72 and 1/700 A/C & ships respectfully, does your booth hold this for me to spray while on that rotating platform?? Thanks for commenting........I wonder if other people are going to look at your posts ...... and 'Sub'. I hope you do what you say and try to do the test of VOCs.....THAT will convince me in the final purchase.

      I did do VOC testing with an expensive meter, and found 0 VOC's leaking with the carbon filter and the Innovation unit. I did not do it on video though and I returned the VOC meter. I am posting a longer video of the unit today I've worked on over the past few months

      @@HobbyBench Good Day, 'Anthony'.... hoping you had a Great Thanksgiving!!! Thanks for getting that VOC testing done, was a bit curious about that, since ( at the time ) was wondering how fumes/overspray, etc... was going to go. But, when I was mentioning about THIS specific spray booth, wife was not too happy about the " water " part, though I tried to explain to her that there is a reservoir that can be emptied out once finished, but wasn't convinced. So, I did purchase a different type of booth...I think a good one, with dual fan, but I use that outside and have to set up Each Time I want to spray... Wondering.....were you selling those airbrush holders that you place on the side of YOUR booth?? Is there a certain dimension(s) that is needed for set up on the side??

    • @HobbyBench

      Sorry ill make a better video, if you mean the connector that flooded the workstation, its the grey T connector at the top of the water curtain that pumps the water up. If you mean the connector i used in the 5 gal bucket, I put a 4 inch ac flange duct in from the bottom of the 5gal bucket cover. I used a 4 inch Circular drill bit to make the hole, then secured it with a tube metal connector. Here is the flange I used - amzn.to/3EurFmH I started doing testing with the VOC meter and have been unable to detect any VOCs when spraying using this method and an auxiliary fan inline to the 5 gal bucket. I'll continue to do more testing as I was very surprised to find no VOCs reaching me when sitting stationary. I'll also put the meter at the exhaust when I get to it

      It shouldn't damage them, but I believe the effect is relatively short term just to keep the item dust free before airbrushing. The same type of spray is used for automotive painting prep work
