Where do you purchase your trays?
Does it continue to grow in the winter? I live in Colorado.
You sure can, here is how Whispering Willow Farm does it, czcams.com/video/0cadhpBe6aM/video.html
Do you run rip irrigation in the winter
Not in freezing temps. Extra care to make sure the lines are drained in between cycles and watering for the plants needs is more important than a set schedule.
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Under stories are better than mulch
Vegetation under the tree is certainly an option.
Great to hear directly from growers of scale. I have an issue with spraying anything other than fungicide and liquid nutrients once bud break because of the greater need to protect and encourage pollinators. Keeping bees improves pollination and produce honey I don't want tainted. I also grow market items between trees which further complicates spraying. It's a case of give and take. As some point it would be great to hear from an IPM that can suggest both Standard and Organic solutions for year round southern orchards.
I’ve got the perfect interview lined up just a matter of getting the two of us in the right place at the right time. 💚
Great work 🙌
Thank you so much 😀
I'm new to country living and made a huge mistake when planting my fruit trees. Everyone told me the deer wouldn't bother the trees because they have so much food out here. One morning I walked outside to find thousands of dollars worth of fruit trees demolished. Now I'm starting over. I'm checking out your website site now. Prices look good so I'm likely going to order. I'm doing exactly what you said not to do, ordering a bunch because now I'm really being schedule. At least I know where they're going.
Many of mine came back this year after being munched on. I found a T post with chicken wire attached to be helpful to discourage browsing.
@@boxelder9167 that's exactly what I'll need to do. They went from being 6-8 ft tall to about a foot. They snapped them like tooth picks.
@@resourcefulgirl - 3 T-posts works pretty good if they are persistent. Make a triangle around the tree. Wrap it with fencing or chicken wire up at least 4’ tall. You may find that some come back up from the roots even if they were munched. When they get up over 6’ tall or more I split the black, flexible irrigation pipe and cut a 4’ to 5’ length and fix it over the trunk to keep them from rubbing the bark off, protecting it from the weed eater, and keeping the chewing animals away from the bark. I have had really good luck with this. 4” black corrugated plastic drain pipe that comes in a long coil. Split it with a razor knife if you are careful or use a metal cutting sawsall blade with someone holding it to keep it from vibrating. I split mine the entire length and hold it up against the tree to measure it and then cut it off to length.
@@boxelder9167 Great ideas!! I really appreciate it. I actually have some extra black corrugated pipe laying around. I love the deer but it took me forever digging holes and planting all of the fruit trees. I'm ditching the shovel and getting a mini excavator this time. Geez I'm 60 and it's just too much work lol.
@@resourcefulgirl - I am 52 so I still dig it by hand. 😁
Ed & Nick, this was fantastic info... a couple years ago, we decided we're gonna add Raspberries- I've never grown Raspberries... I purchased to many, no where to put them, no plan, I ended up putting them in a hurry- the wrong containers, over watered them and killed them... we were at Bob Wells, and the "oh let's get them all now" spirit hit... and we wasted our $'s on an impulse without a plan in place... I've been to several training events at Bob Wells @ Sorelle Farms and absolutely love them and the info they provide. Of course, I love Bootstrap Farmer as well and all the info y'all provide!! Thanks again and blessings
What type of water you use?
In this case they have several filtration methods. Always test tour water source in the planning stages to see if and what kind of filtration/treatment your water source may need.
@@BootstrapFarmerhow they filter the water?
In hydroponics, common water filters include: Reverse Osmosis (RO) Filters Dechlorinators Gravel Media Filters There are also disk & mesh canister filters depending on the setup and water source.

You bet!
Moles! I will be placing stainless wire mesh at the bottom of my Bootstrap beds before filling them in an attempt to keep the moles from eating my veggies.
Great idea!
I dont agree with the slug comment, they harbor slugs, but i still like mine
Some of those slugs are determined!
watch the cardboard !!!! There is forever chemicals in most !!!!! use woos chips
😂 I took 3 hours wiggling the posts to and fro. Then I thought about the Pythagorean formula. If we use that and the X cross string the string for a 40’ house would be 44’8”. 20x20, + 40x40=44.75x44.75. Anyone doing the 40’ house use 44’8” strings to square up the house.
I got 44.72. But 44’-8” works.
Dead I find your station, we are in process of making raised beds. I am part of Master gardeners and we have talked about a hoop house and add on. To our Demonstration garden next to courthouse
We like how demonstration gardens can use raised beds so people can learn/work in a circle so everyone can see. Best of luck with the project.
Rabbits! I planted green beans three times for them to become rabbit food. Tried multiple options including electric mesh fence. Started 2 raised beds which are working for the greens and radishes. Looking for more in the future.
If you fence the garden , be certain to bury several feet of the fence to prevent digging under.
Or place fencing in the bottom of the raised bed .
I definitely need beds. Springtime is super wet and the drainage is needed.
Wish your raised bed were available now. We are looking at purchasing 3 raised beds for cut flowers now before the colder, wet weather arrives.
Raised beds or wicking beds are better, I've been using them for years.
Will be buying one of yalls the SECOND it comes out!
They keep things enclosed and tidy. I love mine.
Our favorite part!
metal raised beds like birdies or the Vegega beds!
Thanks y'all 😊!!! Cant wait to see the raised bed kits... so exciting! I've used cedar pickets for the last several raised beds I made. I use boiled Linseed oil once a year to keep the wood protected... works great... 4+ years and still working anf looking good. I do prefer the zink coated beds. They are fairly easy to assemble, easy to move, and last 20+ years. Thats what we are putting in the CatTunnel, soooon!! Blessings ❤
agree, I have some vegega and vevor metal beds that i love, will be moving soon and want to use that style again..
@Larkz0717 we've got those as well as Vego and a couple others... they all are about the same and absolutely love them. Blessings
@@amsohn1 indeed they are! Back saving gardener saving, blessings!
My raised beds are metal and round on the ends. What’s the best way to build a mini-hoop house? The round ends are stumping me. Doing a fall/winter garden this year.
We've used a couple of things... pvc pipe [we used 1"-panted it for uv protection] and you can use T's or 4ways to create the hoop over them... also Pex- we've used that as well- I know several who've used the blue Pex and have had those up for 3 years... we do take it down when not in use. Just some ideas 💡 Blessings
At the very end of this video Installing Frost Blanket on Low Tunnel Hoops czcams.com/video/TEgFLsp2hfo/video.html @ATLgrow is tucking his plants in at night. You could do the same thing but think of it more of a pup style tent, and fold the flats out and extend them out. You could write them down with a small log or brick or piece of pipe.
Concise and awesome content!!
Thank you very much 🥰
My current raised beds are great however I don’t have any kind of system for adding shade in the summer or green house plastic in the winter.

@@BootstrapFarmer so smart, thank you!
This was a very informative video and just the right length. We have been looking at a full blown hoop house for our small back yard and have been concerned about it overwhelming the yard space. After watching this, I think we could definitely get by with 2 or 3 raised planters, probably 3'x8', using hoops, with shade cloth, or plastic as you have shown. Is there any real benefit to having a walkin hoop house (with raised planters inside) over having the planters outside and covering as needed? Thank you....subbed....and looking forward to that November drawing :)
Raised beds are a great way to start and when you do move into a hoop house the beds could be incorporated.
do yall install the greenhouses?
We do not install.
@@BootstrapFarmer do you know anyone in lamar county that would install? we're not ready yet, getting ready to build our house. but planning on a big green house in the spring
Extremely helpful video!
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
With insect netting or shade cloth over the plants, I’m wondering how pollinators reach the flowers?
If you are using frost blanket all day in the winter/early spring it’s likely the pollinators are not active yet ant it’s too early for flowering crops. On the shade it cold be fastened in a way that the sides or top can be open to allow pollinators in if needed.
What length of emt did you use in this video?
10’
great info!!! The heat has been a huge issue this year!
It just seems to keep getting hotter. Good luck out there.
This is a great and informative video! Thanks for sharing... It was fun to see our friends from the Nakid Gardeners there. We're actually getting together with our NRCS rep tomorrow morning.
Thank you! Good lick on the meeting tomorrow!

@@BootstrapFarmer - LOL 🤣
How do you close the gap when the sides are down and you're rolling to the outside to keep water out? We've just installed our roll up sides, but noticed that when the sides are down, the gap is closed better at the bottom when the side is rolled up the other way...just at the bottom. The weight of the bar and the rope hold it also, but the gap... what do you do? We do have the wind brace corners also covered.
Could you send pics to contact@bootstrapfarmer attn. tech team so we can take a look?

I have tomatoes growing in pots along the outside wall of my garage during the summer.July temperatures here were 35-38 degree. My tomatoes dropped their flowers due to the stress they were in. I want to buy a shade cloth to shade them next season from this heat. Would white shade cloth be best for this situation and at what % shade cloth.

how do you prevent stem breaking at the base of the plant while lowering? We grow cucumbers and I observed a lot of plants dying because stems are cracked. I'm trying to find a better way of doing it, but some co-workers are incredibly stubborn in their ways. I'd be grateful for any pointers
Vines breaking off is likely to happen whenever you’re trying to lean too far. I would not lean/lower anymore than 4 to 6 feet at a time depending on how the plant is doing. If you start them early, the vines have a natural band without having to overcompensate such a sharp angle from leaning more than what the vine can take. Inevitably, he will snap a vine, but overtime you can engage that with more experience. Just know that when you do snap a vine, you can develop a secondary leader, a very high percentage of the time and not lose the stock. It’ll take a little bit more care and I like to mark the plant so everybody knows to give that vine a little TLC during pruning. You will also notice that the longer as the plant lives, you’re more likely to be able to lower more of the vine further than 6 feet .
Totally cool.. thanks for sharing. Blessings ❤
Thanks for watching!
