As the UK's leading producer of authentic live recreations of the greatest music in jazz history, The Jazz Repertory Company has presented a wide variety of shows at international festivals for over 20 years. Our shows appeal equally to jazz aficionados and newcomers alike and have frequently sold out London's 900 seat Cadogan Hall, featuring the UK's finest music in concerts researched with the National Jazz Archive.
It is the sister company to PartyJazz - the former organises numerous concerts and the latter arranges the best in live music for parties around the UK. Is there anything more perfect that you’ve ever heard? The timekeeping, the intonation, staccato, the blending, the sectional collaboration complied with note articulation. My Guy Stan Akin who taught me would be universally proud. ☝🏾 Oh by the way, if you’re listening to this without cover the ear headphones you’ve missed the point of music 🎼 in general. “White ear buds” won’t cut it. Wonderful to hear it as it should be played after all it was symphonic jazz, i find most modern stretched out examples so long, slow and tedious that i want to go to sleep, all of the excitement of the original arrangement is lost.
How often is a banjo part of the arrangement of this piece? I’ve never noticed that before.
It's in both the original 1924 version, and in the 1942 Grofe version for full symphony orchestra. Some orchestras may or may not cut the banjo for some extenuating reasons I'm not prepared to delve extensively into, and to add, the banjo is usually not hearable on the recordings - save, the section from 10:53 and from 5:05, but faintly because because of the drums, brass / woodwind, and string parts. It's also worth noting banjos aren't overly loud, and during the key changes and transitions from theme to theme, there is either a ff in the vast majority of the woodwind and brass parts, or a crecscendo.

The criticism "too slow" often relates to a obvious disabilty to play it faster. I would believe that this orchestra surely is able to play this song much faster. But they decided to play it the way they do.

Love Liz Fletcher's version of this song the most among all! I like the jazz flavor and her articulation that you can hear every single word so clearly. She tells the story so well with her beautiful voice. Love the accompaniment with the percusion's rhythm that gives rich dimentions for the song. Beautifully done! Wish there is a karaoke version of Liz's style.
