February Update
zhlédnutí 2KPřed rokem
With all the wet weather I've not had a lot of opportunities for videos. To be honest I haven't had much going on that I thought would make a good video. I've just been getting equipment together and things built in preparation for spring. I don't know about you guys, but this last part of winter seems to drag on and fly by at the same time. I can hardly wait for spring, but still so much to do 😄
Lift Gate Project Update
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed rokem
You may have heard me mention previously about wanting a lift gate or a boom to take some of the workload pulling honey. A boom wasn't a good fit for me right now with the truck I have so I decided to look for a lift gate. I visited with another beekeeper who had been using a liftgate exactly how I wanted, which really sold me on the idea. So, I picked up a used non-working lift gate, and with ...

Queen Rearing- Management tips from Chris Werner

This video is my one and only from the Hive Life conference 2023. It's also my first Interview. I think that nerves get to all of us at times and I'm no different. After spending a good deal of time with Chris that day I completely blanked on his name! Chris got a good laugh, and I really appreciated him carving out some time for the interview. The subject is Queen rearing and there are some gr...

Wintertime is proving to be a tough time to make content for me. I made this video twice, and never did get it to come off the way I wanted. Queen Cards- Beekeeping Records

These cards are what I've came up with to hopefully help me be a better beekeeper and Queen breeder. I have all the best intentions when it comes to record keeping, but I always seem to slack off and not keep it up to standards. Ian Steppler uses a card system and his definitely inspired me to make these. Now we just need to see how they weather and what else I want to change. I'm looking forwa...

Outyards: Yard Rent
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed rokem
Tis the season! It's that time of year when we pay our "yard rent" or farmers gifts. It can be an important event because it provides the beekeeper an opportunity to catch up with the farmers and discuss how the year went. It's also a prime opportunity to discuss potential new yards. I plan to put out a few videos on outyards, how to ask and what to look for. Thanks for watching!

hi sir! can we using this cage to keep layed queen for a month? beehive in summer in NY just grow way too quickly,we don't to add too many boxes onto the hive,we want to control the queen bee in the cage that she can't lay eggs in order to slow down the speed of colony growning. thanks!

good video, FYI, Michael Bush is a big time proponent of the upper entrance. Actually for more reasons that honey, in his book is the Practical Beekeeper, one of his big advantages of the upper entrance is the lack of skunk pressure as I remember it, and as a fellow husker I tend to agree that there is a lot of skunks in the midwest. I tried upper entrances early on a few years ago and the bees did not seem to use it much, now with a few more years of experience maybe I should give it a try again and see if they would take to it better.

The thing i hate about these Refractometers is you have to recalculate it with extra virgin olive oil every time room temp changes 5°, but im glad i read that in instructions cause its usually. 5 to 1 # out of calibration everytime i get ready to check. Hope to get one of those electronic ones like Kaymon one day, but they are pricy

True, mold doesn't kill bees farmers do with pesticides, superdfm from "strong microbials "will take care of that . Also varoa mites kill colonies, oxalic acid vapor with Robs instantvap will take care of that. Bees just coat over mold, not an issue. Thanks Gus for educational videos

I'm going to make one of these today and possibly transfer a queen over to a split that looks queenless. We'll see! I unfortunately don't have any brood in the split, just nectar in all cells which is why I'm thinking the split never had a queen make it. You say wait 5 days correct? I'll probably need to put some attendants in there with her from the original hive.

I am glad you clarified that this was a mating nuc. Most important is to have enough nurse bees to care for and feed royal jelly from day 1 of hatching all the way thru mating and into the period of 3 weeks, time-tested, to truly see that she is a good proven established laying queen. A must IMO for a successful virgin queen cell just introduced inside your nuc. Thanks 🐝

I think you said three days I don’t think you mean three days. If you kill the queen that is lying in three days, the eggs are hatched and they are perfect age to make queen cells.

Why do you not just use narrow starter strips rather than the deeper surplus foundation? I know it takes longer and is more work for the bees but it seems the quality of the final product would be much better.
