Barkley Sound on a Little Sailboat
zhlédnutí 4,1KPřed 2 lety
This video is about a trip I took in August 2021 to Barkley Sound on Vancouver Island in British Columbia on our Montgomery 15 sailboat. It was suggested I try narrating a video and, since there was no narration in the original video clips, I added it while making the video. To me, my voice sounds ridiculous and I apologize in advance if I sound that way to anyone else!

    Well done! This is what small boat sailing is all about. I suppose for the long downwind run you could have rigged a preventer to stop an accidental gybe. But going forward on an M15 is rather challenging underway, so I get it! I am sailing a SCAMP now, and would be not too happy trying to go forward to rig a preventer.

    Great video. Can you tell me about how much motoring vs. sailing you did? Is there generally wind only on the main parts of the lake or do the side canyons have useful wind as well?

    • @dgrah
      @dgrah Před měsícem

      Thanks! It's pretty variable, just like you'd imagine but I'd say on average we sail most of 2 days out of a week with most days motoring. A lot of time it is nice to explore narrow canyons where it isn't practical to sail so that needs to be factored in. Though, if a good sailing day, we also might avoid exploring canyons that day...

    So happy to see people, especially visitors, enjoying Barkley Sound. It's rarely visited by boats from Victoria, let alone California. It took me two, two-week trips (separate summers) to feel I'd been to most of the great anchorages. 'Fogust' is a well-used term here... July can be better for the west side of the island. • @dgrah
      @dgrah Před rokem

      Hi, Bob. Glad you like the videos! When we use a gas motor we use a Honda 2, which I think was an earlier version of the 2.3. Although once on a really windy day it was hard to maintain steerage, we'll replace the 2 with a 2.3 when the time comes, which I think is soon. Set up time depends a lot on what we are doing and, although I have never really timed it, sails with little gear could take as little as 5 or 10 minutes to rig; it goes really fast. If we've got a lot of stuff to bring, and set up the external gas tank and stuff like that it might take 45 minutes or more.

    Nice video, David. I have M15, 1985. Is it usual to see water inside at stern of the boat while on water. I could not find any sign of exterior crack. Never the less, storage box on the cockpit was cut open. This is only way that water can get inside. Any tips would be appreciated.

    Can you tell me about how you plumbed the external fuel tank? I have been considering doing the same, but determined the fuel might not flow due to the Hondas lack of fuel pump. How does it work?

    • @dgrah
      @dgrah Před 2 lety

      Sure, Erik. I bought another gas cap and drilled a hole in the top to accept a hose fitting. I drilled another hole as a vent. I connect a hose with a bulb pump from the external gas can to the fitting. Periodically, I pump the bulb 10 to 30 times to put gas in the engine's tank or to fill it, depending on the need at that time. Works great!

    • @ErikEdney
      @ErikEdney Před 2 lety

      @@dgrah Gotcha. So it's not feeding it, it's just a semi permanently connected tank that you can pump gas from. I'm considering trying to rig something up so it will automatically feed.

    • @dgrah
      @dgrah Před 2 lety

      @@ErikEdney Well, I do worry a little because it does leak if the tank is full and I tilt the motor up. If I can just remember to keep the tank less than full when I tilt it up, it is no problem. I'm not certain the hole is needed but it seemed to make sense and I'd put it in again despite the bit of leaking.

I have a deep cycle 12 volt lead acid battery under the v berth with large (I don't remember gauge) wire run to aft port side of cockpit where I mounted a socket I think I purchased from West Marine. I plug a small (maybe "30 pound") trolling motor into that socket mounted on the stock engine mount. It isn't much use if the wind is up, but that's when I'd be sailing anyway.
