Gentling Mustangs with Positive Reinforcement: Part 2
Last month, I talked to Dr. Sarah Matlock, a professor of Equine Behavior at Colorado State University, about her fascinating research into using positive reinforcement to gentle mustangs, the challenges associated with it, and the importance of understanding horse behavior and motivation.
This month, we continue our conversation about the impact of positive reinforcement on training wild mustangs, as well as its limitations. She explains the unique challenges associated with gentling mustangs, as well as the importance of understanding horse behavior and motivation.
In Long Story Short, I’ll tell you about a surprising experience I had while training a 5-year-old greenbroke mustang that was adopted from the BLM. And in What the Hay? Q&A, I’ll answer listener questions about a horse that panics when he’s out alone on the trail, a Paint that’s easily distracted, and a mare that just trots faster and faster when asked to canter.

When you were talking about naming, it reminded me of when my friend and I worked as turn out and groom girls at a show stable when we were teenagers. There was a big bay thoroughbred who was the goofiest and silliest boy you ever did meet. He looked very classy BUT he had a forelock that would simply become a puff no matter what was done to it would just puff again. 😂 Anyway, when he moved in, his name was “Willie” which was actually PERFECT for him. About three or four months after he settled in, his owner who only saw him 2-3 times a week decided to rename him to “McAllen”. 🫤 Yeah, no… We continued to call him Willie and his owner would sometimes catch us doing it and get mad at us. But he knew his name and McCallin didn’t suit him at ALL! He will always and forever remain “Silly Willie” in my heart. 😂❤

Awesome Video , I recently visited your CZcams channel and enjoyed your content. However, I noticed that your videos are not ranking well due to some issues. I believe that if these issues are addressed, your videos will rank better. Here are the issues I found with your channel: 1. Video SEO has not been properly done. 2. Videos are not being released on time. 3. The video titles are not optimized. 4. Keyword research has not been done effectively. 5. Video thumbnails are not appealing enough to attract viewers. Solving these issues will help your CZcams channel perform better.

That's a good suggestion, and I hope your horse is doing better now that you know what the issue is! I agree that, epecially with sudden changes of behavior, to always rule out a physical issue first. Before addressing anything as a training issue, I like to have a vet give the horse a thorough "nose-to-tail" exam, and fill them in on what you have been seeing with the horse.

Summary of the podcast: 1. Negative reinforcement works (and its not what you think it is) It is the release of pressure. 2. Horses are very sensitive and reactive to pressure. You must give a release and acknowledgement. 3. Release: a. Timing (half a second to 3 seconds). b. Pressure (how much you give) "Enough to motivate change" > When learning new cues, realease at the first hint of compliance.if you ask too much, it will look for release elsewhere. > if they show aggressive behaviour, you must scold them and show your 'anger' so they realise they did somwthin wrong. 4. Horses always look for acceptance in the herd. If you praise & SCOLD them, they have the motivation to please you. 5. Horses want Comfort & Safety. They should know that YOU can provide that. 6. Extra tip: Make them work hardest at the end of the session. If you think they gave enough effort, end the session there and let them go. That is their comfort and release. Hope these notes help others too. ❤🐴

Had been seeing more an more research on gmos, glyphosate, an pesticides may be largely the root of what is damaging our horses gut health.. I have changed to non chemically treated alfalfa mix hay .. My horses consumption has increased, an have been able to saddle an after a little walk tighten it up with no ear pins. He’s only been on the new hay for about three weeks. I see good changes already.. keeping fingers crossed . This would be such a great yet commonsensical fix.

I believe a bit hobble is a cross piece, many times metal, between the rein holes on a spanked bit to keep the horse from grabbing one of the shanks in its mouth.

Julie, I notice that there is no stirrup groove underneath the bars on the flex 2 saddles, where the stirrup leathers lay over the bar. I have 1 horse that really notices it and is super sore in the twist. Multiple ride tests, feel tests, and she is chomping at the air, stamping her feet and really saying "it hurts!" Do you have any thoughts about this?

I am now showing a bit in beginner western classes but have to show in a shank style bit. I would love to try one of your bits with a very short shank, just enough to make it legal for western. I'm 100% guilty of creating spoiled horses. My issue has been finding someone to come show me exactly what I'm doing wrong and how to correct it. All the trainers just want me to drop my horse off with them for a month, which would be USELESS because my horses aren't the problem, its ME! I guess my realizing and acknowledging that is half the battle. Since I can't find anyone to physically come show me I'm relying on youtube professionals to help me do it on my own🤞🏻💖
