Proud bishop. Your downfall is eminent. Suppose all priests stop to say mass in the whole diocese for one month, I assure you Mr bishop you will go home. We have seen such proud bishops before, at their old age are suffering terribly. Worse if you get sick are forced to resign, you will harvest what you have planted. Stupid bishop.

If there is one thing one can uphold about Bishop Nkea is that he is a gifted orator ! However, one can feel his being uncomfortable with the question of the Priest-Journalist on the reaction of the Cameroonian Episcopal Conference to Fiducia Supplicans. One feels that the Journalist gets the nuance of the new theology of pastoral blessings proposed by FS. Bishop Nkea rattles some answers. He says he can bless a homosexual and not a homosexual couple. Fair enough ! This is exactly what FS is saying. Blessings are directed to individuals who genuinely and spontaneously come for a blessing outside of any liturgica context. "Blessings, like Holy Communion, are not a reward for the perfect but food for the journey." (Michael Seans). Bishop Nkea says, he cannot bless a homosexual couple. But FS is not about gay couples but "human persons" living in an "irregular union." His argument is that, " benediction" means "speak well." How could one speak well of a gay couple? Etymologically, Bishop Nkea is very right. However, he is also committing the Etymological fallacy which is the faulty argument that the "true" or "proper" meaning of a word is its oldest or original meaning. Because the meanings of words change over time, a word's contemporary definition can't be established from its origin (or etymology). In linguistics there is a huge difference between semantics and pragmatics. And everyone, will agree that when a priest blesses water, the intention is not solely reduced to "bene- dire" (speak well of) from the etymological point of view. But "blessed water" is a sign of God's renewed presence ! This implies that meaning is always in context ( this pragmatics in linguistics cf. Silva Moise- Biblical Words and their meaning). In this case, a "blessing' could be an invitation to conversion or a reassurance of God's assistance despite the sinner's condition. And consequently, a call to conversion. A spiritual journey!!! It is the context that defines "meaning." This is where many people missed the point including some bishops. "Our sins degrade our human dignity but they do not remove it. Grace, the grace of the cross, removes the sins and grounds the dignity of the human person." (Michael Seans). The priest Journalist captures this nuances excellently ! Bishop cites the argument of "authority" to underscore his point by quoting Card Fridolin Ambongo, President of SCEAM. Nonetheless, Bishop Nkea signed a document which accused the Declaration of "hypocrisy" and consequently, Card Fernandes and ultimately the Pope. Was this a fair judgment? This lacked a "discerning listening". Would this have ever happened in the time of Pope Benedict? For me, where the Bishops erred pastorally, was the failure to give a press conference, explained to journalists the intention of the FS or ask for clarification of DDF before Bishop Nkea signed his rejoinder which lacked intellectual depth and too reactionary. This would have reduced the anxiety among the faithful and the media blitz it caused. My final observation is about the interview. Bishop Nkea refutes the allegation that Cameroonian bishops are disunited. He gives the example of the Ambazonia. For me this is sheer sophistry. Truth is the truth. Sometimes these divergent views from the bishops are informed by the acquaintance with Biyaland regime ! On n'est pas dupe !!! Quand meme ! Even the blind sees this !

One can easily see that Bishop Nkea is very uncomfortable with the question concerning FS. For those who read the different reactions, public opinion has it that the Cameroonian version was the hardest (embarrassing???) because of the adjective "hypocrisy"qualifying FS.

Bishop Nkea and his colleagues missed the whole point of Fiducia Supplicans. The best pastoral approach would have been to give a Press Conference, explain the content of the Document and then, say how applicable is the Document in a Cameroonian where the notion of irregular relationships is different from that of the West. This would have given Journalists a better appreciation of FS. Unfortunately this was not done. And the whole Document has been reduced to gay marriage, missing the pastoral intent of the document. The Document has not in anyway promoted or endorsed gay marriage. The document talks about persons in their search for God. What Nkea is saying in his interview, the document does not say the contrary at all. The reaction of the Cameroonian bishops has been reactionary validating the truncated and biased secular front pages especially in utlra right Catholic and anti Pope Francis media insinuating that the Pope has changed the Catholic Church teaching by promoting homosexual unions. This is very far from the truth. What is certain is that, this is a taboo subject in the African continent and Cameroon in particular. Unfortunately, the Bishops missed an opportunity to help the Christians understand what it means to be pastoral without compromising the teaching of Church. However, the DMRTV of Buea Diocese did a marvellous job explaining to Christians what the objectives of the Declaration by Card Fernandes. Christians could voice their worries and the savvy and pastorally founded priests gave very balanced and objective responses to these questions. The gay blessings saga has been an “aubaine” to the Cameroonian political landscape where the subject went ballistic, the media blitz has been unprecedented, with many insulting the Pope on very unfounded grounds, supported by pseudo intellectuals on matters of the Catholic which they have no clue except hearsay. How one wishes the Bishops were so quick to denounce the woeful moral decadence in the Cameroonian, the hike in prices, the road accidents due to mismanagement and embezzlement, the continuous killings of women every day, the poor governance of Biya and his stooges, and the abuse of vulnerable people by the clergy, or in religious circles, etc. Unfortunately, Nkea and his followers did not help things out. Many Christians have insulted the Pope, many Christians in Cameroon are convinced that the Pope is a promoter of gay marriages. This is very false ! If there is one person who has confronted and denounced gay lobbyists, it is Pope Francis. (Cf. In the Vatican Closet by Fredéric Martel). The Pope rather preaches mercy towards everyone irrespective of who they are! The theologian who wrote the document signed by Bishop Nkea did a very bad job, certainly coping ideas voiced by Card. Muller. One newspaper Le Massager insulted the Pope on their frontpage as "Le Diable habillé en Soutane." This unfortunately the message, many gullible have taken home ! For me, insulting the Pope is the worst act of infamy. One can disagree without resulting to calumny. Yes, many have smeared the Pope. How many of those insulting and insinuating erroneous conclusions from FS, did read it in all its entirety (only 5000 words)? The document by the Cameroonian episcopate lacked a discerning listening. Except from the interview of Card Manuel Fernandes: For those who read the text serenely and without ideological prejudices, it is clear that there is no change in the doctrine on marriage and on the objective valuation of sexual acts outside the only [kind of] marriage which exists - male-female, exclusive, indissoluble, naturally open to the generation of new life). But this does not prevent us from making a gesture of paternity and closeness, otherwise we can become judges who condemn from a pedestal - when we consecrated men have much that humiliates us as a Church, we have given serious scandal to the simple ones with our behavior. cf. Pillar.com

Pope Francis has repeatedly confirmed that marriage is between a man and a woman for the sake of procreation. He is saying Priests can give a blessing, but not of their union. Read the document on the official website of The Vatican, The Holy See. He is trying to save souls and bring everyone to Gods One True Apostolic Catholic Church, as God wants. Jesus Christ blessed sinners to get them to change their ways. Like, He blessed the woman who was about to be stoned to death for her sins. Jesus said whoever is without sin cast the first stone. The woman changed her life.
