Home Powerwall Build: Some Common Mistakes and Pitfalls
In my last video I went over why Nissan Leaf battery modules are very well suited for home powerwall production (especially if you drive one already, it's basically a free powerwall when you retire the vehicle). In this video I briefly go over some of the mistakes I have made while building mine, and the direction the build is headed in. The next video will be on the completed home off-grid power plant.

Battery Swap for a 24kwh Nissan Leaf EV

This video is a supplemental video for the numerous other battery swap videos available on CZcams. I had a few thoughts I wanted to share with people about to do their own 24kwh battery swap, and share the new "battery pairing" feature available on the Leaf Spy Pro App. Before you watch this video I highly recommend watching the more in depth, detail oriented video on these swaps done by Dala: ...

    Gosun is in the process of coming out with an EV Solar Charger with flexible panels that goes straight to the car battery that folds up on the car roof when you are not using it. They are asking $3000 pre-order pricing. Something more flexible where you could choose what kind of panels you want to set up would be welcome on the market too. Jame's Real Solar invention would really be useful.

      I used a Tripp Lite 2k btu unit. But this is a ducted window unit, and not a mini-split. Because it houses the compressor inside the vehicle it is inherently less efficient. If I were to build it again, I would try to find a unit that placed the compressor outside of the vehicle. That would be much more efficient

  • @solarcharging9743
    @solarcharging9743 Před 5 měsíci

    If you intend to charge an EV with an inverter, it's important to consider the technology that's used in the inverter. High frequency, transformerless inverters provide a much lower surge capacity and a shorter life expectancy than heavy duty, low frequency, transformer-based inverters. Additionally. high frequency, transformerless inverters do not provide any galvanic isolation between its DC boost stage circuitry and its AC output which can allow high amperage DC current to pass through to your EV's onboard charger and damage it. You may be able to use a high frequency inverter to charge an EV short term, but it would just a matter of time before the MOSFETs or IGBTs in this inverter fail and you can kiss your EV's onboard charger goodbye. A much better and safer choice if you want to charge your EV with solar is to use an inverter or power station that uses low frequency, transformer-based technology in its design. Low frequency inverters can handle high surge loads for at least 3x their continuous rated capacity and they can do this repeatedly, without sustaining damages to their MOSFET transistors, for minutes, rather than the milliseconds that a high frequency inverter offers. And because low frequency inverters use a transformer, they provide galvanic isolation which protects your EV's charger. That's why the big-name brand inverter manufacturers like Schneider Electric, Outback Power, Sigineer Power, Magnum Energy and Victron Energy and others, all use a low frequency topology in their design.

    Ground AC? One side? This is an idiotic requirement some electronics manufacturers want and demand. You have a floating ground. No connection to the third prong. Some old circuits assumed center tap. A voltage half way between the two prongs. ( good ) . AC usually is delivered as 1/2 of a 220 volt AC circuit. It's center tap and one side. Electricians aren't the brightest bulbs.

    Quick Question…. We have Giandel 2200w 12 vdc pure sine wave inverters ready for installation i our ambulances and 2-way radio communications and repeater vehicle. There are many more devices requiring clean power nowadays and this seems like a good solution for the extremely limited budged we have for this project. We love the inverters and the manufacturer is rock solid according to several other fire departments in our area who’ve purchased the Giandel. The BIG QUESTION… Do we need to “pre-charge” (with low impedance / high power resistor) the capacitor bank prior to applying 12vdc power from the 100ah x 2 (parallel) 12vdc LifePO4 batteries? I’m our communications trailer, we have a pair of batteries with charging provided by a 60 amp AC to DC LifePO4 charger from a small portable Honda 2200w inverter based gasoline genset. The generator only has to be run for a few hours every 12-20 hours of radio equipment use. The batteries and inverter permit us to only run portable generators occasionally. The batteries are normally left disconnected with a Cole-Hersey type mechanical DPDT 200a 12vdc switch. In our other vehicles, the inverters are wired directly to the batteries (using both fuses and circuit breakers to catch an overload or dead short as soon as possible. Any ideas? Sorry.. forgot.. we have used the standalone inverter in our comms trailer a few times for short intervals. During this time, we haven’t run into any issues.. Thanks !
