At 2:45 you mentioned that without a VPN the IP and DNS/websiteURL is not encrypted. True, but the actual data is via HTTPS/TLS. I prefer a direct faster and lower latency connection using a "burner phone" with no name or any info on file and change it once a month. ;)
Which of course is work on your end, but interesting approach, not possible in all countries as Europe requires KYC for mobile plans. Also we are thinking about making combining multiple internet connections an option, so your traffic gets split between the ISPs - that would also increase the available speed.
Maybe the idea was already outspoken, but can you add a funktion to allow a Domain/Connection etc. temporarly. Like the NOSCRIPT addon for Firefox for example. Sometimes i want to visit a webside only once and have to allow the domain. It would be cool if the rule exaption would turn back after about 10 - 15 minutes or untill Poortmaster gets restarted. Thank you for this good tool.
Adding such an option would fit when we touch the prompting system again. We are currently working on the backend of the ui system where we are moving a couple features into the same system. New prompts with more options are something we would be looking into.
Great breakdown. Question how much latency does spn add to connection?
There is an effect on latency, but it is minimal, and for normal use you should not feel it. Because of how each rout is calculated for each connection things like speed tests are not a good source on telling you what you can expect... since it only reflects that one rout
@@SafingIO ok thanks
Any time you have any extra servers between you and the website, there will be some extra inherent latency, no way around it. It's a privacy trade-off, except if you're using a direct connection with a "burner phone". ;)
I hope this video is a start into better visualizing what we do differently. There is more to how VPNs can get attacked with pattern matching and so on... where the local isp your pc is connected to can actually know more, and I initially wanted to get into that as well, but, that would have been a much longer video. Also SPN does protect more then what is shown in the video, but again, that would have been a much longer video. So I hope this is a great stepping stone into other explanations, so please let me know what you would want to know more about. Here is ok and on YT.
At 6:35 VPN companies be like "Trust me bro, we're not logging anything!" Riiiiiiight! lol So basically an SPN is a channel aggregator breaking down the packets into smaller bits through different servers, then reassembling it at the user's device.
@@BillAnt not sure how you interpret channel aggregator in this case. With SPN your internet connection that typically would originate from your PC is broken down and resembled at both ends of SPN, Your PC and the exit node. With a VPN the connection ordinates 100% from your PC and is only piped through the VPN, which is why they have to be concerned about leaking and such - when a packet "leaks" from the pipe it is still a 100% valid connection.
My VPN can't connect to internet when using Portmaster, it says DNS error ... Do I have to add my VPN domain as an exception into the Portmaster DNS setting somewhere, if so, how and what exactly do I have to do? thx
depending on the VPN client there are different settings you need to change. you can find guides here: wiki.safing.io/ there is also an extended one for proton VPN just use the search bar
Try Nobara Linux maybe for some Fedora~Nvidia gaming
Yes I used to run nobara, but when he made the switch to plasma my whole desktop flickered and was unusable... I might look into it again
@@SafingIO oh I see, hopefully you can find something that works 🙂
I'm currently using this in conjunction with adguard within brave browser and NextDNS at the router level :) my desktop PC runs snappier too :)
super nice!
Question: Is it possible to manualy target and ad.. like the zapper in Ublock Origin?
the functionality you are talking about would have to be implemented in the browser, not on the system level. The ad should not show up if it is served though an ad vendor. But sometimes you still see the empty box, this is due to Portmaster not interacting with the web page but only the network traffic. we will need a browser extension to accomplish that, which might happen in the future.
This program looks good but in practice it is useless. I need to have a clear message that a program wants to connect to the internet. In this window there should be an option to remember setting permanently for the whole program, otherwise I get 1000 requests for every firefox connection to the Internet. To grant it total access I have to open options and only set allow there. Pointless. No one will want to do such a job, even though the program is beautiful and has a lot of options. Even the biggest computer whizzes will eventually get discouraged when they are forced to set settings for the program every time a new program requests Internet access.
you changed the setting from default allow to prompt. If you are using Portmaster in prompt for all apps that is what you are in for, but what we recommend doing instead is going in and allowing the apps you trust, blocking the apps you don't and prompt only the few you actually want to prompt like this. For browsers there are other options built into the browser we recommend using, things like µMatrix I hope the guides help you to setup Portmaster in the way that works best for you, if you found the defaults confusing, let me know
How to enable local (Lan) connections? Allow button is disabled there..
Distorted and blurred text in UI on nvidia GPU systems. It's a shame that this issue has not been fixed yet. Not sure about AMD gpus.
Well I tried Portmaster and is really useful, sadly it seems it lacks some more control over the "Force Block Incoming Connections" bypass, I have AgentDVR running withc uses WebRTC and Portmaster simply blocks access to it and I have no way to enable it. There should be a simple Override to the "Force Block Incoming Connections", for example, simply allow all incoming connections to a specific port or port range. If there is this option I can't find it.
Hey, I am a bit confused, where in the video did I loose you? the process is as simple as disabling FB incoming connections, finding the connection and then setting up the rules in simple steps... If I better understand what you did not understand, I can improve for the future :D
Awesome people. Awesome program. Now let's do our part guys. Donate if you can but at least, raise awareness about this masterpiece of a firewall. The more people learn about this tool, the stronger it will become.
Thank you for your support!
Amazing!
Thanks!
Dear Raphael & the fantastic Safing development team, Thank you for this amazing product. I finally found the precise control I needed for all my apps. I was stuck with Comodo Firewall for 8 years, but now I have found the best alternative in every way. I am thrilled with the level of control available (especially when it comes to controlling outgoing connections). I will soon subscribe to the Plus plan. Please continue the excellent work. Thank you again.
Thank you for the kind words! -R
thank you subs to the channel :-)
What happens if I have installed software such as Portmaster, Simplewall, WinUtil or any software that changes the settings in Windows 10 etc and the software gets uninstalled or deleted (for whatever reason), will Windows automatically default to the previous settings, ..... if the answer is no will it be necessary to reinstall the software (Portmaster etc) to be able to make the required changes........???? Thanks.
Can’t use it. The app gives me blue screen of death
I just recently found your app and I must say, you guys are amazing, the UI is easy to use and shit just works when I block something. Thank you.
I just downloaded this. When I start it up, not a single website loads - it just says "not connected to the internet". My internet speed is extremely poor, so could this be the reason?
It usually has to do with other software. The usual suspects are antivirus and VPN
@@SafingIO No VPN currently running, and only Windows Defender installed. I'm running your program on my laptop, tethered to my mobile phone, which also doesn't have anit-vrs installed
No complaints about “Just Things”. I have trust in your efforts towards us all.
Does have blocklists for ip ranges, gov ip addresses, etc
Can you please define and show examples of what exactly is INCOMING Connections? ie. Google Chrome - when you access the internet and you get/download data/files from a website, isn't the data/files you download to your computer consider INCOMING? Thx!
I am running a VPN client no problem (windows 10), but once I install PortMaster - my VPN is unable to connect to any of its servers ... DNS error issues. How can I fix this issue?
Safing on pfsense (or any firewall) would be amazing.
i created many my own personal new rules on apps and even for "commandline" in the portmaster, the thing is, now, i would like to tbe able to export that (the entire sets of rules i have created and saved) into a single file instead of per one rule,so i could import those saved sets of rules to a new installation of portmaster if i have to reinstall my linux. currently i have to do that per rule/app. there should be a way to export the entire sets of rules already created and saved. or is that only available in the paid version i wonder.
currently there is no complete export, but as we mentioned in this live stream the sync feature is coming soon (yes it is payed, plus or pro plan) and with that you can automatically export all settings to a folder and take that folder to a new machine either manually or you use something like nextcloud or syncthing
On the Dashboard (or anywhere else), is there a place where one can see how many trackers etc have been blocked?
Its a Portdisaster
Please feel free to ask questions. We understand that some users might have difficulty in setting things up properly.
Monero is king for privacy I think, so awesome you support it.
I am so happy that you showed this info. I'm going to try and do this on the Steam Link and Oculus VR. I'm always having trouble getting these to connect to the PC within the network. This gave me a greater understanding of how it works. I kind of figured out most of it without your help, and the really well planned out UI with tooltips. Thanks so much for this amazing privacy program. I plan on being a customer for a very long time with this kind of service. Woo! 😁
good information thank you
Please do a video on how to get VPNs working. I'm a contractor and have to use multiple VPN clients for our different clients. I like your software, but until I can the VPNs working I cannot use it.
Good information - thanks. Love the product as is. Anything new is just icing on the cake.
Thank you for the kind words!
Agreed.
Super tool, danke.👌
Gerne! Freut uns, dass es dir gefällt 😁
The only two cryptos anyone should be using. Don't change.
There is only one. There can be only one. It can only be Bitcoin. The moment you allow the idea of more you dilute supply. Period.
Thank you Raphael for this very in depth video of what is the roadmap of Safing considering the tight resources. I completely agree with all of your points but to keep it short, yes passkeys would be a lot better and having 2FA or MFA wouldn't be much of an issue since, like you mentioned, it's a firewall. The only problem I could see existing would be the fact that you can deactivate devices on the account page, rendering your firewall inoperable. Still, for this to succeed on a bad actor it would have to be very well executed and hard to accomplish. One last time, thank you for the amazing work you and the team have been doing and myself as part of the community I'm happy to continue supporting in any way possible ❤ Best wishes!
Thank you for the kind words and asking the question as well! you are correct regarding the disabling of access to SPN, it will not disable Portmaster over all, but it allows to decrease privacy and security in that way remotely. Plus features are more convenience features and disabling them should not impact security or privacy.
More of more, please!
Keep up your good work ,it's much appreciated. Thank you.
thank you!
Hallo, I installed Portmaster on Ubuntu 22.04 and it works riht away. Well done. I have a request for a mini tutorial on getting captive gateways to work. I, like many people, get lots of work done at local cafes with free wifi. Portmaster blocks some but not all of them from letting me log in or even see the free gateway. How can we serch Portmaster for the connection that is getting blocked, and allow it in a safe way ? I tried poking around but the descriptions are a little cryptic. I think many Portmaster users would really appreciate a walk through getting past those free wifi login pages. Thank you team, --Molly
I really like portmaster and just have a few topics for potential discussion, apologies if already been discussed. Really enjoyed watching this aswell. Your view on:- - recommended secure browser - preferred secure operating system - why we should use SPN - using secure DNS via portmaster vs VPN - and if using vpn, should I change vpn dns to e.g. quad9 and will this fingerprint more?
I have two printers. Used one yesterday. Print things often. Honestly!
cool
i hope more people using the firewall. its the best one so far.
To be hones, i do like how Ubuntu looks. But if you are using Ubuntu pleas try a different distro as well, they did make some super weird things with this distro.
I have a red light in the tray at startup. What could it be?
I am stupid...I will never understand how to use this shit software...
You don't have to change anything, just installing it and leaving it as it is will increase your privacy and security.
@@SafingIO I can't access internet
So you call yourself stupid, and then accuse the software of being sh^^? 🤣
