Saul Rose: Folk & Drugs & Morris Dancing | Chatterbox with Mel Biggs S1E9
How does one dance and play at the same time with a 6kg instrument strapped to them? How many jobs can one switch with Tim Van Eyken? Why should everyone try Morris dancing at least once in their lifetime? And how do you leave a job with AstraZeneca in a blaze of glory to become a full-time musician?
... this, and many more questions answered in this month's Very Lovely Chat!
Saul Rose is an English folk singer, Morris dancer, and diatonic accordion player. He is known for his work with Eliza Carthy, Waterson:Carthy, Faustus, Maclaine Colston duo, James Delarre duo, and the eminent ceilidh band Whapweasel, amongst many others. He took over the actor-musician role of 'Songman' in War Horse at The National Theatre. Saul has danced and played with many Morris sides over the years, including Hexham Morris (Cotswold), Chiltern Hundreds (North West), and Newcastle Kingsmen (Rapper).
CW Saul talks about the circumstances of Paul Sartin's death from 33:50 to 35:36.

That was really interesting. ❤ hammock chat - very chilled! Agree that Brexit biscuits might need a bit more work - some of the dancers seemed to falter a bit during that one - they lost the rhythm I think.. not sure why, but for me personally, as a dancer, I think I might disagree with Lucas - there might be a place for emphasising that first beat.. (as Lucas said - personal preference plays a part - and also how experienced the dancers are). But I thought Upland Opland went beautifully - the dancers really seemed to flow naturally to it. Great work overall on your part and I hope the enjoyment of the dancers will motivate you to do more of this. Lots of love.❤

thank you so much for this topic. it is one of the main issues i am struggling with when playing. a very good advice. meanwhile i introduce the box to my listeners by just making some "quiet" noise before i start playing. some chords, a melody part. no tunes - just accidental bits. i slowly try to adapt the room to the box and to my presence (not vice versa). kind of getting a hello from the new environment and kind of bringing myself to normal breathing. building up some sort of normality for me and for my ears (!), i would say.

@@MelBiggsMusic This is the first I've heard of him but after watching your entire video I spent a couple hours mesmerized by all his other content. What a player! Do you happen to know the make or model of his amplifier? I'm particularly curious about that.

@@enektyk1408 he really is quite something - I totally understand the rabbit hole!! Duo Bottasso are high up on my list to see live. The amp in this video? I don't I'm afraid - it belonged to Toon as he leant it to him for the concert. I could find out for you if you like? I liked the sound of it too - the wood casing appealed to me as the sound was so warm and natural

@@MelBiggsMusic That would be great! Thank you :) I play in a lot of noisy pubs and have been searching for a proper amp. Been leaning towards a Fishman but I love the look of that amp and would be interested in learning more about it!

Interesting workshop, cool creative playing, but I guess I couldn`t afford having my box frequently repaired to re-seat/rewax reed blocks, realign bass buttons and replace broken reeds. Nice music anyways.

Haha! I don't think those things happen too often with Simone? He says bellows have been an issue for him - and also that Castagnari know he breaks things so they engineer his repairs in a bespoke way 😁 also, Simone co-designed this instrument - the Mas model - to do these things better than others. The form and profile of the buttons - domed mushroom shaped - allow for a lot of these things to happen without causing issues to the keyboard stems and mechanisms. But I know what you mean!
