Just what I was looking for some panelled oak doors. 6 years since you posted the video, but still really helpful.
@@lafamillecarrington Good luck man! Might have been a long time ago, but I'd still probably do the same today.
Hey seth..this is Brandon from ds Smith!!love ur videos
Very nice introduction man. I am at the same stage. Small shop, learning alot on CZcams with people like you. The only thing is not I haven't gotten into making videos for CZcams. It Sims alot of work too. God bless you brother. Keep it up. I'll take any tip you have for me.
Ah I thought the table was going to collapse at the end and chip them all ;P
powertools... 😪
You're way better with wood than you are with a camera! 😉 At least turn off auto focus. That way your work won't swim on and out of focus so much when you put a hand in front of the camera. Another thing that would help Is to position the camera so it isn't constantly obstructed by your hands. Lovely panel though
@@hunglikeahamster Appreciate it lol. Yeah, I did manual focus for awhile, but manually focusing every shit is a huge pain without an external monitor. It's also really hard to get a shot without my hands in the way sometimes.
I think probably the two most important items to have for making cutting boards or pieces when multiple pieces of wood are to be glued together. Nice work and video.
I recently attended a timber frame class at EcoNest in Oregon. Robert LaPorte spent nearly an entire day on how to sharpen a NEW Japanese chisel. What a wonderful experience.
I watch allot of woodworking videos and for the past few days I’ve watched allot of kamiko builds but this right here left me speechless, the precision, the patience, the beauty. Well done man thats a sub and a like.
Kumiko*
Appreciate that a lot man! I’d love to get into another kumiko build!
Hey Mate, I bought a Japenese green tea set for my workshop and when I get tooo busy. I stop n have a little tea ritual to calm myself down and enjoy my work.
Joli travail !
I probably wouldn’t use a push stick even if it was next to my right hand! And when I’m done I would look next to my hand and say, “i probably should use this some time!”
Amazing work. It's truly unbelievable how nice it turned out
Incrível, vc tem algum vídeo que ensina fazer esse gabaritos de ângulo ?
You need to quit the background music. Whenever you’re talking, you don’t want that annoyance in the background. Mainly because you can’t hear a word that you’re saying. Other than that? Great job!
I use propane heaters in my shop …. 2 tanks , the heaters are your typical Best Buy or any sporting goods I run them on low … one at one side and one at the other .. my shop is 12 by 24 … not very big but it’s insulated … those 2 heaters keep me in a t-shirt in the dead of winter 🥶 in idaho …. And they last a solid month or more … it cost me 25 bucks a month to heat my shop … the heaters I bought new and the tanks I bought used , for a great price.. in a couple months I had what I needed …. I spent 20 bucks on 2 used tanks and then had them certified for 5 bucks each ….. the heaters are 39 .00 bucks each …. So my total 110.00 bucks … pretty cheap way to heat a shop and the cost is 25.00 bucks a month to heat my shop for 3 months a year .. that’s a great deal and a way to stay nice and warm in the winter .
I cringe every time you show yourself at the table saw. I fear that if you don't start using push sticks or push blocks, they're soon going to be calling you "Lefty." PLEASE consider.
Push sticks are incredibly dangerous, and I use a push block when I'm not completely comfortable with a cut.
Congrats!!
Bravo, verry beautiful
I'm going to try to use this for art works and routing, mainly because using thick wood is just so darn heavy. Interesting indeed. Thank you.
wow!
Just found you. We’re at the same stage of transition from hobby to career. I’ve sub’d and look forward to your progression. Best wishes - TV
Ive seen one where the blade is straight. The one you have is angled. Any idea on the difference?
It's not a big difference either way. The only benefit of the angled blade is when you chamfer across the grain. It prevents tear out, or breaking the corners off when planing.
@@SethsProjectthanks!
Kumiko panel looks amazing! Super job! I've done some kumiko myself and you appreciate it more once you've tried it. Nice job!!
Thanks man! It's taken me years to get to this level, and I still have a lot to learn.
You made it look very easy mate bravo
How have you managed to keep all your fingers
Well I respect the tools, but I'm not scared of them. Also maybe luck.
Seth, very informative video. What style/brand of flattening plate do you recommend
Trend diamond plate. I found it's the best. I need to buy a new one actually!
Great video. I just bought a few Ouchi chisels, second hand ones and will follow your advice for sharpening these.
I need to make an updated video on my sharpening method. It has changed slightly lol
@@SethsProjectPlease do, I am very interested!
good way to loose thoughs fingers
Wood is EXPENSIVE here on the Hawaiian Islands. Oak, Maple, and Mahagony here cost about $7.00 a foot for 1 x 3 lumber. That's from HD. Going to a speciality shop the price for stuff like purple heart or other "rare" woods start at at lest $25 for a 1 x 3 2 feet long. Unless I can find rich people I don't see making money on cutting boards. That's all atleast S2S lumber.
Where are you located and what is your price point on these vs cost?
Unfortunately the music often overrides your narration. I literally could not hear what you were saying at times for the music being so loud in comparison to your voice.
Очень круто.
really good stuff. Congrats on the baby! That's AWSOME!! I can't find that oil applicator on amazon. do you have a link?
Why do you think a micro bevel destroys a Japanese chisel??? I have worked with Japanese chisels for 30 years and always used them with a micro bevel. Japanese (traditional) chisels have precisely the cutting steel embedded in the mirror side, in addition, the chisel will generally last much longer with a micro bevel. And after I came across a honing jig in 2004 I've been using one ever since - I'm trained in "freehand honing" but see so many advantages in using the jig that I've "converted". And now that we're at it, using a dry tinder on a Japanese chisel is (for me) a no-brainer -since it's precisely at the tip on the mirror side that the hardening is important, it doesn't take very much before the hardening is gone.
I've learned quite a bit since making this video. I still try to avoid a secondary bevel if I'm going to freehand sharpen because eventually the secondary bevel will get too large and it will have to be ground, and I'm not a big fan of grinding unless I absolutely have to (personal preference). It most certainly won't destroy the chisel lol. I also use a jig for sharpening now. Some of my japanese tools are too odly shaped for the jig though, so I still do freehand from time to time. Thank for the comment!
@@SethsProject Ha ha - I only see now that your film is 4 years old - my bad 😂
You lost me when you introduced a rather large machine. Not for me so I stopped and wrote this.
It would be much better if you explained what you are doing with each step. For example, when at the beginning you are hammering the chisel, is this to eliminate the hollow found in Japanese chisels. I have found very little info on this and would have liked a video on just this. Also, please wear safety glasses when you sharpen! I presume you are using a diamond stone to refresh and level out your sharpening stones. I would have liked to know what type of stones you are using and their grit. Also you appear to be hollow grinding, but end up with a flat surface. An explanation would have been nice. Thank you.
This is definitely a patient man’s game. My woodworking is a lot more fast and dirty.
Amazing work! Having built a few Kumiko panels I can appreciate how complex and fine your work is (far beyond anything I've managed so far, but great for inspiration). Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words, and good luck!
felicidades
What types of wood did you use? The only thing I heard you mention was the Cherry
Perfect job! Thanks
Bravo! Perfect job! Thanks
Magnifique vidéo !
Woodglut has a lot of plans to choose from.
Oh yeah those “western” tool. Japanese are always better.
I think there are pros and cons to both. Cutting on the pull stroke is far superior in my opinion.
@@SethsProject I was being sarcastic... the leading edge in on the back side and not as easily visible. The ergos are terrible IMO.
@@James_T_Kirk_1701 How long have you used a Japanese plane? Everyone has a preference, and I prefer something in between.
The "perfectly flat" western made planes is a pretty good myth, I believed it until I accidentally nicked my Veritas block plane too. Went to touch up the surface on a piece of granite and was shocked that only part of the plane was acutlly being cleaned up. Spent a few extra minutes lapping and now that block plane has stayed perfectly flat
Yeah, honestly it would make the planes much more expensive if they were all lapped, so it's kind of a good thing in a way especially if you have the tools to fix it. It's crazy how much better the plane performs when it's dead flat though!
@@SethsProject it really is impressive how much better they work, I've been moving away from buying the new ones and trying to restore the old Stanley's. I never really noticed the difference until I compared a freshly flattened Stanley vs my Veritas Jack and there really is a difference!
