Digitakt 2 - My thoughts after a month
In this video I casually step through the process of making a beat on the Digitakt 2 while also talkign about the experience. So far I'm really pleased with Elektron's update to the Digitakt. I've been a mk1 user since 2018 so I was very keen to see what would warrant a 'mk2' version. I think it's worth it personally.

You got me into the MPC one back in the day great videos :) What’s ya thought on the Trackers from dirtywave and Polyend
100% agree about the battery - it should have been added and it would make such a difference! Literally it would become the perfect groovebox.
As an ex Elektron avid fan and ex owner of pretty much all their stuff except og machines and syntakt (still think it’s the laziest move they made) I had to try this mk2. I had original from the release month and loved it to death but gradually outgrown it an eventually sold as for a year it was just collecting dust. I had mk2 for a few weeks on loan and the problem I have with it is digitakt mk2 trying to be a jack of all trades but master of non. A bit of groove box, underwhelming sampler and somehow very limited synth. In my opinion even Dirtywave M8 being size of mobile phone is a lot better at everything. And even have built in battery. As you said it’s plenty of space inside which is just air. So my personal final thought is elektron lately just sell air in a fancy packaging and with good advertising.
I appreciate you sharing your perspective 🙏 I personally feel like the DT2 excels at being a fast sampler with just enough tools to manipulate the samples. But that's my opinion. I'm also a big fan of MPCs and there's a lot of people that can't stand the modern MPC lineup 😆 I have yet to try the M8... one of these days!
@@teftymusictechRespect your opinion too! 👍 Looking forward to watch your take on M8. I was blown away by how much power and creativity packed into the thing that basically fit in my pocket. It is with me all the time.
I'm still sticking with the old version. The stereo sampling and storage space was always a problem for me. That's why I compensated for it with an SP404 MK2 or Blackbox. That's why I like the SP 404 Mk2, because of the battery and also because of USB-C, quick and fast with a working app.The new software features are great, I'd like them too, but the hardware doesn't make up for it. Maybe the third or an MK version? I'll wait and see, for the new price, I personally would have expected more.
That's a fair assessment in my book. Plus the SP404mk2 combo'd with the DT1 is a killer combo for sample processing and performance.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Dude thank you for making this!!! This is pretty much exactly how I build songs, I like to play in as much as I can, and I have wondered if it would even be possible on Digitakt. I like to play my ideas in so it's intentional and built in phrases, then use the sampler/sequencer to modify and create weirdness. Especially since I've been getting more into idm/glitch/breakcore styles, but I still prefer to play in my parts. Once Overbridge is for sure available, I'm 100% getting the DT2. Thanks man this seriously helped contextualize its usability for me.
Awesome, I'm a big fan of playing in as much as possible as well! That's one thing that bugs me on the MPC that I can't just have the main sampler start recording as soon as the sequencer begins. There's workarounds with the looper (max 16 bars) and audio tracks, but you have to jump through more steps to finalize it. This method with the DT2 is pretty fantastic. Super fast as well.
I'd trade the internal battery for polyphony any day! I'd carry a separate powerbank+pd adaptor with built in "poly machine" rather than RK midi loopback cable and "OEM" battery. Nice review tho, and I can relate in feeling the Syntakt suddenly aged a bit, workflow wise. I'd love a MK2 with just the QoL upgrades from the Digitakt II and the same new buttons layout, as I always make mistakes jumping from one to another during jams 😅
Oh yeah I didn't mention polyphony. I think it's because I'd play in a polyphonic part more often than not via recording. Would be nice if they allowed a channel to be a dedicated poly instrument and then allocate 'x' number of voices to it (kind've like the Analog4). And yeah, it was really strange feeling like the Syntakt was outdated. Kinda shocked me honestly. That's when I knew the DT2 had truly evolved.
Would you consider making a tutorial for the Digitakt II? I really like your style and workflow. Thanks!
I'll definitely consider it! Thanks for watching 🙏
I have a PD for my Syntakt and I love that. I take it places and make music on the fly. I have a case that fits both the Syntakt and the PD, that’s a worthy investment. But I agree, it should at least have battery option. I’m shocked that wasn’t included in this upgrade.
Elektron can‘t handle the battery handle 😉
Yo! Thanks for the shoutout <3 Super sick bassline Tefty!
Hey Ricky! Thanks for stopping by 🙏❤️
Omg that’s what I needed to see! 🔥
Very informative 👍
Good video. I don't have one but I dig the diggy-tact and will continue to call it that. If I had the budget I'd get one and a 404 to go alongside my One because I think different workflows lead to different results in the same way a Les Paul will lead a guitarist in a different direction to a Strat or a Tele.
Completely agree on the workflows. It's why I have a lot of gear in studio. Different ideas just naturally evolve from various DAWs, synths, beatboxes etc etc.
I would love to see a Digitakt 2 vs MPC One/Live/X from your channel sometime. The hype surrounding the mk2 had me looking at boxes and I wound up getting the MPC One+ instead of the digitakt2.
I was actually thinking it's time to revisit that comparison 🙏
I bit the bullet on the DT2 and love it. I decide to keep the OG as a midi sequencer and backup sampler. Still waiting for DT2 Overbridge support though. Thanks for the vid. Regards to you and Meems.
Yeah I'm curious to see if Overbridge for the DT2 has evolved at all once it's officially out and supported. The latency as a plugin is always what kills it for me, but the ability to multitrack each part is amazing. With the DT2 they're gonna need like 36 inputs 😆
Awesome overview! Would be something I would think about if I was into hardware!
Thanks Tony!
I'm curious to know how sonically different this is from the stock soft clipper under drum efx 🤔
Great honest review!
Thank you.
Thanks so much for reviewing this plugin. Much appreciated.
The sp404 doesn't have real side chain that can be a deal braker for some people but theres work arounds to get kinda the same effect
Im gonna be getting either one of them to upgrade on the novation circuit rhythm but cant make up my mind im leaning towards the mpc one
I'd say a Circuit Rhythm is closer to a SP404 in design philosophy. An MPC One is going to be a very different experience from the Circuit.
Thanks for the advice.. just upgraded from a MacBook ‘15 to a new Mini M2. Hopefully some huge upgrade! What kind of screen do you advise to me? And maybe two ?
Quite surprised to find myself preferring the filter of the hydrasynth, even without the drive. Was not expecting that at all, and now I'm on the fence about the minifreak 😆
🤬🤬🤬🤬 I bought this 3 days ago and it STILL isn't showing up in my mpc , how did you get it into standalone ? I never had this problem. I'm signed into my inmusic account on my mpc. The soft clipper doesn't show up in my activations or my plug ins drop downs. It isn't anywhere. When I enter the serial number it says "already registered"
put the mpc in controller mode and back to standalone mode. you will then find it in the activations prefs

neither have good bass from what I hear
You should have test the Limter because all this is just a cleaner clipper for the MPC which already has a limiter that you can set to no lookahead. Kind of a waste of $20 honestly. They must need money. They should port over something like XPand2 for Standalone bcuz that would fly off the racks.
I suggest watching Bolo's video... He compares it to their limiter and shows how you can achieve loudness with less db's using the soft clipper than with the limiter. Also the drums "sound" snappier using the soft clipper as opposed to the limiter.
@@bulletheadbeatz2296 I know what I'm watching next...
My experience with drums was very similar to the Tube Drive effect. The Soft Clipper was snappier because it felt like it distorted faster. Personally I'd rather 'limit' with better VSTs like Ozone. When you heavily limit drums it sucks the dynamics out of them and you start getting flat mixes really fast. Just my 2 cents though! I highly recommend testing out the plugin inside the MPC with your drums so you can make the call yourself.
Great video man. Where did you get the longer slat wall arms? I am using your affiliate links but I’m looking for one for my Obx8. Thanks man 🎉
Thanks! It should all be linked in the Affiliate links. All the same models I was using in the video.
Sounds cool but i'm good with tubedrive. Thanks for the thorough and technical explanation. I wish they'd develop a visual parametric EQ, I'd gladly pay for that! I see people mention a reverb also, i have no issues with the current reverb yet. Seems pretty good to me.
We definitely need our own version of FabFilter's Pro-Q 3 for MPC
Now that you've mentioned you're a gamer, I am curious to know what games you're currently playing or your favorites....Thanks in advance!
Elden Ring DLC 🙌
I mostly use my MPC in controller mode but I try to limit myself in hiw many plugins I use just in case I have to continue work in standalone mode. Of course that's unless I continue the song in Reason or eventually Ableton Live
I kinda feel like i wanna pick it up but... Kinda only because it is in standalone.. I need the juno-plugin and the Flex Beat before i even think of this somewhat questionable plugin though - and idm spending on these plugins either - i feel like i give em money so that they can make more plugins that will or won't be useful. My aim is to work completely standalone since i dont own a computer if im honest... But at this point i SHOULD just save up for a laptop so i atleast can run Arturia V Collection X and Arturias FX Collection 5 which i also rent-to-own - feels silly that they drop this1 and not more VSTs if im going to drop abit of criticism... Although they have the essentials already i guess
Great video on this plugin...💯👍
MPC Pad Loop function Main page Track 01>Transpose set to 1. Program 001>Warp samples> Global tab>note on. Samples tab>pad loop on. For different drum loops, include them in the same mute group to alternate back and forth.
Does it support 4K 144hz monitor (just one) ?
Yeah should no problem
What was that oscilloscope you were using showing the harmonics ?

Id personally probably use it to sound design 808s and basses. I think basically made it for the new FL users who've been buying mpcs. apparently the FL soft clipper is how they make their beats "loud" (and distorted lol)
It just has cheap clipping algo that everybody ears have grown accustomed too. Its closer to the parabolic option on this clipper. MPC hardware tho is still and always what pros have used to get that knock bcuz of the way it clips going through the converter.
You seem very knowledgeable with this topic. I have my MPC X SE connected to my Roland Fantom EX 8. My goal is to play all my Roland sounds while combining the sounds from my MPC and saving the entire project on my MPC. I have my TRS quarter inch cables coming out the Roland going into the inputs of my MPC. I’m also connecting the MPC & Roland via USB. My issue is my MPC is not displaying the Fantom EX 8 in the “Input ports & output ports” of the midi section. I decided to order the midi din cables because maybe this was the missing component . Do you have any other tips on where I am going wrong?
Yup, pretty sure you need to set the USB type to generic on the Fantom to get the MPC to recognize it. But honestly, if you do that then the computer/DAW support won't work. So you might just want to stick with standard MIDI ports for your templates. If you never plan on using the DAW features of the Fantom, then yeah change the USB settings to generic on the Roland and you should be good to go.
@@teftymusictech Thank you for your response. I set the USB driver to the Generic but my MPC still doesn't recognize my Roland. I just ordered midi dins to connect from MPC to Roland along with the USB and TRS cables. Currently my MPC and Roland are connected via USB and the TRS cables. Maybe the midi dins are the missing component I need but I am not sure. My midi dins will be delivered tomorrow.
Did you figure it out by chance? Just saw the response on this and wish I could help. I remember I had to change the USB settings (and save it in the global settings) for the MPC to talk with my Fantom over USB-Midi properly.
You right. It should have been a free update. we don't really need yet another clip fx. We need things we don't have. How about a Proper Reverb ? 😉
THIS! A proper reverb would make my life so much easier with my synthesizers
This is a great way to think about it.
It finally dawns on people that this is a totally different beast
I've been following your channel for some time now precisely because of connecting audio cards with mpc one+. Thank you for the information, and my question is what do you think about connecting Arturia audiofuse 16rig with mpc one+. Could it work multi-channel because Arturia is both a standalone mixer and an audio interface. Many greetings from Croatia, Tomi.
SPRING40 discount code makes it only $17.26...Yes it still works.🤫
Why don't Akai/AIR Music Tech just include visual feedback on their plugins like your Oscilloscope to see how alot of these plugins are affecting the sound? Sure using your ears is always the way to go but having visual feedback, always helps with fine tuning adjustments
An Oscilloscope will make the MPC/Force feel like a grown up. Make it happen #Akai
If for some reason you have a need to get both…you can just download the additional software at no additional cost….I brought my key 61 before the 37 came out and realized that the 37 would be a better fit….
Always a fan of your technical explanations. You’re both factual and opinionated. I wish I saw ur affiliate link before purchasing. I suggest mentioning in the beginning of the video, because as soon as I saw it on CZcams, I went to purchase it! I like to follow along as you sample. Thank you for all than you do to help with your videos. They’re very well produced as well as informative.
The SP sounds better. Period
