ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) tear and Management
An ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear is a common knee injury, particularly in athletes involved in sports like soccer, basketball, and skiing. The ACL stabilizes the knee during movement, and a tear often occurs due to a sudden change in direction, awkward landing, or direct impact. Symptoms include a "popping" sound, swelling, pain, and knee instability. Initial management involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), followed by physical therapy. In severe cases, arthroscopy-a minimally invasive surgical procedure-is used to repair or reconstruct the torn ligament, particularly for active individuals, to restore full knee function and stability.
