Making a Raingarden
This video documents how the raingarden in the shelter next to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Heritage Centre in Blackheath was built. It was created during a workshop run by NPWS in June 2024. Participants included NPWS staff and NPWS and Blue Mountains City Council Bushcare volunteers. Environmental engineer, Alexa McCauley from Civille, and NPWS Senior Field Officer Monica Nugent, facilitated the day-long event.
This video was produced as part of the Blue Mountains Planetary Health Initiative's Bioregional Collaboration for Planetary Health and is supported by the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (DRRF). The DRRF is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments.

This is a wonderful summary of the work of Planetary Health Initiative, but I think we need to link this LOCAL story to a bigger story of different ways of being, thinking and doing drawing on Indigenous knowledge systems logic of relationality to come up with a new economics and politics away from the emphasis on continuous growth and consumption.

Andrew, the presenter here. Although talk is a bit of a ramble, the focus is the variety of successful and evolving recycled projects developed over the years for evolving and developing reasons. This has come from committed, dedicated professionals with amazing support from the community and oftentimes boldness from some bureaucrats and politicians. Private sector collaboration and goodwill has also been essential. Going forward, there are possibilities to explore, using past successes and lessons as a springboard which motivate me to attempt to play a role. When we try together, we oftentimes can come up with ways that are cheaper, better for community and environment and even stimulating business activity in Australia.

Andy's comprehensive way of sprinkling black and gray water to keep his acreage wet before bushfires SAVED his house and property. Goes way beyond the technique of sticking a sprinkler on the roof -- as others did-- not saving their properties! Nor waiting for helicopters to dump water on one's house -- often destroying the house itself and not saving the property from fire.
