I thought Bride by Ali Hazelwood was alright. it's her first paranormal type book, usually she just writes regular romance books and I tend to like those more. some books I wanna read this fall: - divine rivals - powerless - nightwatching - intermezzo - the co-op - autumn - boulder - my vampire plus one - nothing like the movies

Looking forward to A Memory of Light, there's some Jordan prose in that at the end.

Hey, thanks for the honest review. I just read Crown of Swords for the 3rd time, and I have to say that the female toxicity in this book reaches a new high for the series. From Tylin raping Matt at knifepoint to Elayne laughing about it, to Nynaeve beating the shit out of Lan for something that wasn't his fault, to Egwene being the worst I remember her being all series, this is definitely an aggravating book to get through at times. Jordan created a world where women have ruled and held the most power for 3 thousand years. Even in villages like Emond's Field that hasn't seen an Aes Sedai in 100 years, the distrust in men's ability to make decisions or hold any power is latent. That's why virtually all the women are alike. Even the good ones, like Min, still have that view that men are essentially only good for two things - manual labor and sex. It definitely shades every female character and every male-female relationship in the series. The fact that this needs to change, and that women and men need to work together to defeat the Dark One is kind of the point of the series. It is brilliant overall, but as a man, obviously, it can be a difficult read at times. However, for me there are two great scenes that make this book mostly worth it. The most obvious is Matt saving Elayne by driving off the Gholam. "You bloody can't have her!" And Elayne finally gives a full-hearted apology to Matt for how she has treated him. Great moment for Matt, but also a good moment for Elayne that kind of redeems her in my eyes. I think she is actually a good woman, rare in this series, and just tries too hard to be Daughter Heir and Aes Sedai. The other women don't have the weight of a throne on their shoulders to use as an excuse. Lastly, and most importantly, I think my favorite scene in the series up to this point, is the one between Rand and Min right after they had sex. Rand is doing his normal self-loathing and then trying to send her away, but she just refuses to leave him. She knows he needs her, and damn straight he does. It is the first time we hear a woman confess her love for Rand and Rand confess his love in return. It is also the first time in the entire series that we actually believe that they DO love each other. Theirs is one of the only non-toxic relationships in the series, and it is so refreshing to see a man and a woman actually act like they care about each other. Min keeps Rand sane and attached to his humanity, and though I like Elayne and am OK with Aviendha (who is actually good in this book, the little she is in it) Min is really the true partner for Rand. Ironically, Min is also the first person to tell Rand that Elayne and Aviendha love him too. Very fitting. That entire scene including Min watching the Maidens give Rand a bath is a sheer joy to read. It gives me a smile every time.

Agree 100%. One trope I can get behind is when a character has been dead the whole story, and it is not the narrator. I have one title in mind but already ruined the ending.

I agree with every word, Zak, about thrillers, sci-fi, and Brandon Sanderson's goody-goody characters. The book Dune had me rooting for the bad guys; there's a sequence where the good guys plot for a chapter and the bad guys scheme for one, repeat two or three times. I'm putting together a small dissertation on what I've termed Unfinished Epic Syndrome, my own personal schadenfreude. The symptoms are straightforward, anger then denial culminating in delusion. There are actually youtubers who believe George RR Martin has finished Winds of Winter and is 'within days of being done with' Dream of Spring so he can release them simultaneously (something publishing companies and movie studios NEVER do). How they can ignore the fact he's got at least a hundred million reasons to never type another word socked away in the Caymans and Switzerland? If he's got in crypto however he may be banging the keys again soon.

Maybe you could check out R.R. Virdi, since everybody is saying he's plagiarizing Rothfuss. And his second book is called The Doors of Midnight, and I don't know if that's a diss at Rothfuss' fans. I hope it is.

I agree with the Chosen One trope IF they have agency. Chosen One's usually have some sort of prophecy or fate or something propping them up which can remove all stakes for the CO. When I love the CO trope is when whatever propping them up proves unreliable (false prophecy, protagonist ISN'T the CO, ect)

Yourself being a booktube professional have doubtless heard or read the word romantasy before, Zak. I only became cognizant of it recently. After my initial derisive bark of laughter, I thought it was clever. I guess that's what 50 Shades of Grey is. About 2012 every woman I worked with was reading it, that means I was forced to read it. Twilight was on a vague periphery I'd never cross into but 50SOG sold in the same amounts as Wheel of Time & ASOIAF and read a lot faster than Outlander. No comment on content but numbers like that get everybody's attention; without them I'd have never read DaVinci Code or Harry Potter.

Sanderson had fun in Jordan's sandbox. Jordan's procrastinating, infuriating cast swam eternally like ducks in a circle until Sanderson furnished them with rudders. With Brando Sando at the helm characters like Nynaeve started acting like they were 30 instead of 14. The only ones who acted realistically from book one to eleven are few and far between: Thom, Lan, Loial and Mat, but Mat only after that chokepoint in Tel'aran-rhiod got his mind right. The Aes Sedai felt their power threatened when the Ashaman (i.e. a shaman) were able to channel again. No matter what the circumstances those with power are reluctant to share it or surrender it. There may be real life parallels in that maybe.
