It's also wrong to assume that just because something happened long ago, nobody back then thought it was wrong. Look around you. Stuff we know is wrong happens all the time from our leaders. It did so in the past, as well.

You just want to sound wise and tolerant. If you would have been a slave for all your life, and 500 years later people would have said "We can always do better"(?), you would think that people are lacking empathy and compasion -like you now. Plus what the * means "we can always do better"? That sounds like something said by a child.

When the indentured servants couldn't meet their labor demands, they began buying slaves from slave traders who obtained them from village raids in foreign lands. This is all very well documented. It's creepy how people always try to bargain down evil to something more palatable.

Not for the major work. What your talking about amounts to having some one mow your lawn for your debt. But real slavery was very present there.

"Slaves were acquired as war captives, piracy victims, and by purchase from slave traders, who took slaves from local raids; however, no specific race was targeted" There. How hard was that? There was literally a Greek god of slavery. Why are you trying to minimize this?
