Making a Giraffe out of clay : Unless this is being made with a child, I would not scratch the markings on. It would be better to paint them on once giraffe is finished. I had to make another giraffe quickly for the video as it looked very childlike. Thanks for watching.

What type and gauge of wire are you using? What cone did you fire to? Thank you.
I didn’t use any wire in this sculpture. I used stoneware clay and fired it to 1220. 😊

I have 3 questions. 1- what kind of paints you use? 2- how you add that glossy reflection at the end of the video? 3- is this frog made in porcelain or the process of creating figurines/animals with porcelain is totally different? Thank you

has your dog been fired or just dried clay before painting.
Hi Donna, Yes it was fired. I used underglaze to paint at leatherhard stage. I only put glaze (clear) on the nose and eyes. Porcelain has a soft sheen so it looks good unglazed for this little dog. 😊
What is the paper mesh you are putting in the clay and why are you using this technique? I’m new to this medium and don’t know much.
Hi, I used thin strips of newspaper and also put special kiln wire in the legs to make them strong. I added the paper to avoid air being trapped as i compressed the clay. I sometimes use newspaper to help support the clay and to keep it in shape while I am making. I sometimes take it out as well by making an incision. Not a good idea to pack in too much newspaper because it burns out making smoke. Adding newspaper also helps with the air flow during making - trapping air will lead to the piece exploding in the kiln. ☺️

What are you putting in your clay to support the legs?
Hi, I put kiln wire in to support the legs. You have to remember that the clay shrinks so I push the wire up from the foot about a half inch.

Hi Kitty, It’s porcelain clay. It hasn’t got glaze and has a nice soft sheen finish.

I am learning..but i have seen many using wire and foil for inside the body and limbs...I see you dont use that in the body. did you fire this? I am using Air Dry clays. How is the had gonna stay in place securely? I am just looking for tips. I want to make a life size of my dogs. Thanks...
Hi, I have used air dry clay only once and didn’t get on with it. You can put paper/ tin foil inside and also use wire because you won’t be putting it in the kiln.
You can support the head by propping something under the chin. Good luck 🙂
