This medieval map leads to happiness | Dr Karel Fraaije explores the Hereford Mappa Mundi
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 2 lety
Dr Karel Fraaije travels back in time to explore a hidden treasure from the English Middle Ages: the Hereford World Map. This enormous artwork shows what thirteenth-century scholars from England thought our planet looks like. The document is dotted with ancient legends, biblical sites, and a great number of presumptions about strange and distant places. The mapmakers even proposed that some peo...

Wow, both of your videos are incredibly made and also you choose so very interesting topics, not just battles like almost every other history channel. Its a crime that this gets less than thousand views - fuck the algorithm, it should have put you on the start page of every history-interested viewer.

Very interesting and insightful. It's a pity that the explanations are so short and that there are questions that are unfortunately not answered. Why does this map lead to happiness, or what´s about Europe, Asia, Africa in details, what is behind half the globe? But it´s fun to watch!

Thank you very much for the kind words. It would be tremendously interesting to delve deeper into the questions you outline; plenty of material for a second video. For now, I'll keep it (too) short by offering just a small anecdote I thought might interest you: the scribe who wrote down the names of the continents on this map made an unfortunate (but humorous) error: he mislabelled them. On the Hereford Mappa Mundi, Europe is called 'Africa' and Africa 'Europe'. Very confusing! Once again, thanks for commenting; greatly appreciated!
