To explain those opening minutes, the MC is just incredibly depressed and doesn't really care. It's never outright stated anywhere in the game that this is why, but the movie adaptation of the opening scenes do. He's questioned as to why he's acting so aloof and he says something along the lines of "I don't care. Why is dying scary?"
