I don't know if it's financially viable for you, but in my experience with prior business travel it's been possible to book an upgrade as long as you pay for it, either by paying for it directly or by reimbursing the company. Or have you approached your company about the issue? It's possible they would be willing to accommodate you by booking business class or a second seat. You deserve to be more comfortable when you travel and to avoid the stress and anxiety leading up to it!

Hey Whitney, I just wanted to share that I really appreciate you being vulnerable and sharing your flight anxiety with us. It’s been on my mind a lot lately because the last few times I have been flying with my wife, who is bigger than me (a 4’11” person) and often refers to herself as a big girl, I have been so angry and upset with the airlines because I feel like the newer planes are even smaller because there is literally almost no way for anyone to not be touching anymore and bags don’t even fit under the seat anymore. I think this is a really big issue that seems to only be getting worse and I really wish that the airlines would work to prioritize individuals over profit by squeezing as many people onto flights as possible. Your vulnerability has been a great reminder for me to continue to practice empathy and compassion for others on the flight because at the end of the day we are all human beings and we all deserve to take up space in a way that is comfortable and the airlines are the ones robbing everyone of that experience, but especially people who are bigger than whatever messed up standard of normal they are continuing to enforce. I’m sorry that traveling has been such a stressful experience for you and I hope you know that honestly any time I see I am sitting next to a women- regardless of size, I’m honestly just glad it isn’t a man (cus I often find men do not care about taking your space regardless of whether or not they need it- not always but more often than not) 😂 so I would be happy sitting next you you on a flight any day!

I feel your pain on feeling too big for things. I’ve been focusing on my health this year and I’ve lost 40 pounds since January. I found that, first and foremost, not calling it something silly like a ✨weight loss journey✨helped my mindset on it. I also faced the same setbacks. I’d count calories religiously and then would mess up badly and stop for weeks, only to repeat the cycle for months. Instead of counting calories, I focused on setting realistic goals for myself. One week, I would try to focus on protein, the next, adding more healthy choices, the week after that would be making sure I did some form of exercise every day. Once I got more comfortable in new and better eating habits, I started to pay attention to calories again. It honestly really helped to take a lot of the pressure off myself, while still holding myself accountable. Anyway, I hope this didn’t come off as preachy or condescending, I just totally understand what you’re going through! No matter what, you don’t owe anyone anything.

But on a serious note, have you considered weight loss aides like Ozempic? I really feel for you that it's affecting your mental health so much, maybe using something like that to kickstart weightloss would help, and you'd find the motivation easier from there. Just a thought, hope you don't mind me mentioning it. I'm not from the US though, I imagine that maybe it's really expensive.

I wish there was some way to normalize being in physical contact with other people and being chill with it. Like I am a fat guy with broad shoulders and wide thighs and my dream flight experience is being with people who completely understand to the point where we just stop giving a shit about trying not to touch and instead are like "hey, my shoulder is really cramping, okay if we shift a bit?"

I totally feel you with feeling you invade peoples space on planes and stuff! I have mobility issues and need mobility aids often and with that I also feel a lot that im in the way of people... what I try to remember is, that a lot of people feel uncomfortable in spaces like planes and whether you are bigger or have mobility aids or whatever the reason is, I think often everyone is in their own head about being in the way of each other... and I try to be compassionate toward myself and others, because were doing the best we can sending lots of love ♥

I am not plussize but I can still relate to the overeating and underexercising. For me it really helps when I go with friends. Ask Shelby to go for a walk with you, 30 minutes every day to talk about books. Or you can listen to an audiobook on your walk and only allow yourself to listen when walking. Or find a different sport you can do that you like. Maybe cycling? Or swimming?
