Quarter sawing hardwood logs on a bandsaw
Milling a 35-year-old Eucalyptus nitens (Shining Gum) that we planted on our farm in 1988. The tree was pruned to 6m to improve wood quality. The mill is a Hardwood Mills Australia GT40 bandsaw with hydraulics.
This tree was harvested from a multipurpose riparian planting along our creek. Removing the eucalypt has provided more light and moisture for a 10m tall pruned Blackwood and similar height pruned River Sheoak that will now put on more growth.
The stump and head of the tree have been left to feed the fungi and insects and thereby support other wildlife that feed on them.
Harvesting trees for profit can be an act of conservation.

Harvesting sawlogs from conservation plantings

We planted our eroded creekline in 1987 with a range of native tree species. Within a few years we were enjoying the conservation, shelter and aesthetic benefits. Now, we get to harvest sawlogs. Bambra TreeSleeve - the flexible tree guard
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 2 lety
Faced with the challenge of protecting young trees from sheep, wallabies and kangaroos we set about designing a flexible tree guard. Being flexible means the trees can develop their natural stability and sheep don't rub on the guard as it provides no resistance. If kangaroos knock it, it just bounces back up straight. After 25 years of trialling various options, we have settled on using a fibre...

Lightning hit one of our 25-yr-old pruned pines. I wasn't far away! The tree was snapped in half. Also, why doesn't firewood from lightning struck trees burn.
Redwood harvest

Exciting day on the Bambra Agroforestry Farm with the felling of our first Coast Redwood. This one was 82cm in diameter at age 33 years. Prune to 7m the underbark volume of the pruned section alone is about 2.5m3. I mistakenly say the tree was pruned to 8m in the video - other trees in the group were pruned higher than this one. Stay tuned for more videos on the milling and drying of this log. ...
The truth about live tree stumps
zhlédnutí 2,6KPřed 3 lety
What is the truth about living tree stumps? I acknowledge existence of a fungal network through which nutrients and carbon can move between plants. But, to sustain a huge root system right through the year (even when the soils are dry) requires a direct root graft. Root grafting also explains the occurrence of 'flashback': when an otherwise healthy tree dies when herbicide is applied to a nearb...
Let's talk (frankly) about carbon
zhlédnutí 2KPřed 3 lety
The world wants to encourage farmers to plant trees to lock up carbon. But, is the current approach working for Australian farmers? In this video I calculate how much carbon is stored in wood and explore the problems I see with the current options for rewarding Australian family tree growers. I also propose an alternative model that overcomes the problems of permanence: the "hot potato" method....
Redwoods for erosion control
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 3 lety
We've planted more than 70 tree species, both native and exotic, but only one is able to control the tunnel erosion. We grow Coast Redwood for timber on our highly dispersible sodic clay soils. Another example of how growing trees for profit can be an act of conservation. See the chapter on Redwood in my book "Heartwood- the art and science of growing trees for conservation and profit"

Milling clearwood pine

Pruned Radiata Pine on the Norwood bandsaw. The log was 32-yrs-old, 70cm in DBH and 4.5m long. The sawmill is all-manual; I'd love a hydraulic log turner! For the big sections I use a 4WD winch that's fitted to the forks of the tractor to rotate the log. I'm cutting 2inch boards to be re-sawn on the twin edger after drying in the kiln. We need 10x2, 6x2 and 4x2 framing timbers. Seems a shame to...

Timber growing helps feed Sugar Gliders
zhlédnutí 446Před 5 lety
Caught in the act: How our high-pruned timber trees are helping our rare Sugar Gliders survive the winter. The clear trunks are an easy landing pad. The gliders then chew the bark of the Silky Oak to induce the tree to bled gum that is high in carbohydrates. I have been noticing small marks on our Silky Oak for years and wrote in Heartwood that I thought it might be the Sugar Gliders. Now I hav...
