A history of Trafalgar Square
The story of Charing Cross and Trafalgar Square illustrated in a series of historical maps between the 1500s and modern day. We visit the Royal Mews - more birds of prey than horses; see two Eleanor Crosses; drop by an ancient priory and watch as a new public space is built.
And surrounding the history is my walk between Piccadilly Circus station and Charing Cross station via the Haymarket and Trafalgar Square itself.
It's an early morning walk - explaining the relative lack of people around - and it’s number 60 of my continuing series of London Underground surface walks between stations.

Out of curiosity what time of the day did you shoot the video as Trafalgar Square was deserted and I've never been when theres so few people around Also does anyone know why Greenwich was chosen as the prime meridian when Trafalgar Square was considered the centre of London youd think theyd choose the latter over the former?

    • @EuroScot2023
      @EuroScot2023 Před dnem

      The Prime Meridian running through Greenwich was established there as The Royal Observatory which was the base point from which all accurate British maps of the time were measured was on the site. Greenwich was also the traditional home of the Royal Navy, who had an understandable major interest in accurate mapping. The Greenwich meridian was not the only one originally. Different countries, such as France, based their mapping on a 'Prime Meridian' suited to their own needs and national pride. With the increasing internationalisation and globalisation of world trade and travel, this was obviously not very satisfactory or, indeed, convenient and eventually the Greenwich Meridian was chosen as the global baseline in the 1880s - though France took several decades before they swallowed their pride and joined the party. The line was originally defined in terms of astronomical observations but has now been moved just over 100 metres to the West because satellite navigation systems take account of gravitational variations - the earth is neither a sphere nor uniform.

    Back in the day, until the mid 80s I believe, there was a better way. When coming off Hungerford bridge on the South Bank, walk through Jubilee Gardens. At the rear of the shell centre there was a flight of steps that lead to a walkway that went through the shell centre and then over Belvedere Road (I think) and directly into Waterloo station. All gone now I’m afraid.

I still struggle with the idea it was once countryside, it just seems inconceivable from my vantage point of today. Walking up Charing Cross Road towards Oxford St the other day I wondered what the topography of the land would be if you took the city away, wouldn’t suprised if its about a 100ft elevation from the river by the time you reach Oxford St.

    I grew up in Stanwell adjoining LHR in the late 50s through 60s. My school was two fields and some grass away from what was the distant end of 27L/09R. The village grew from a few thousand to 16 000 while Iws there although the village itself retained is original shape with developments to the south , in addition to LHR the Staines reservoirs bordered it to the west. Its all very well to say it should have been elsewhere but where north Londona nd South London are hilly so no airports there , further west is Windsor Great Park so nothing was going to be bult there and further than that it doesnt get flat again until where Blackbushe is close to 40 mils out and even then its not really big enough. East of London is the Thames , and then docks and marshland -a svanat might have suggested building over dockland as LHR replaced the docks in a way . Of course it wasnt LHR back then but LAP -London Air Port. Back in the day with its 5 runways and endless different types jets , turbo props and recips it was fascinating . A bit of forward thinking would have left more land available to the north , there is still quite al ot and thatw ould have allowed a third e-w parlale to be bult in the 90s but thisis the UK and forward thinking is an alien concept
