Awesome video. I am from NYC but living here in Vietnam more than thirty years with my wife who left Saigon by similar cargo flight in the closing days of the war. She was 21 at the time and traveling with some cousins and with no idea where she was going. We met in 1976 in NYC and married in 1977 and will celebrate our 47th anniversary tomorrow June 25. After meeting her I became fascinated with Vietnam but it was very difficult to travel there in the 1980s. But we decided to see about meeting someone working for the Vietnam mission to the United Nations. The head of the mission received us at his apartment where we had a friendly conversation. He could make no visa but arranged for us to get one at the Vietnam Embassy in Bangkok. So we went to Bangkok in Feb 1988 with nothing more than his verbal affirmations. Sure enough we got the visa and became among some of the first Americans into Vietnam since reunification. When Clinton normalized relations with Vietnam I found a good job here. On my way home from work in the evenings I used to pass a little food shop run by handicapped girls. There was an orphan who had a flimsy birth certificate with a Nha Trang address but she was never able to go lacking funds and the physical ability to travel by herself. My wife and I offered to take her there which we did in 1996. The address was the location of the Khanh Hoa province police station and no one had any idea about her. There was a little guest house in front of the police building with the main guest house behind being the provincial prison. We all stayed at the front guest house where there was a friendly receptionist who helped us put an advertisement on the provincial TV station. Soon bits and pieces came together and we tracked down her birth mother in Perth Australia. Turns out her father worked for the military police at that location just at the end of the war. He was killed in the last days. The mother overwhelmed at the loss of her husband and baby with polio decided to give the baby to an orphanage. She was raised in Saigon. The mother came right up to meet her. Sometime after she moved to Australia but has since returned to Vietnam to live permanently and where we remain close friends.

You are incredibly strong, so very sorry your Dad didn’t live to reunite with you. I’d be in shambles if it were me.

That's nice, thanks for sharing. We have lots of places like that in the US. Some of them here are very authentic, but most of us can't tell the difference anyway.
